Tell what languages you speak, and please BE HONEST if you only speak English put that. Don't start saying you speak 22 languages just to make yourself look good, because everyone knows that's not possible.

I speak English, Esperanto, and Spanish.

Here's a short paper on 1337 as a dialect of English (http://www.kuro5hin.org/story/2002/2/20/15052/8453). I expect there may be more scholarly papers out there, or at least under consideration.

Tell what languages you speak, and please BE HONEST if you only speak English put that. Don't start saying you speak 22 languages just to make yourself look good, because everyone knows that's not possible.

It is possible. I read a book about some famous Victorian explorer (can't remember his name now. poss. Richard something) who could speak at least 25 languages fluently and get by in another 20 or so.
I knew a woman from Bourganville who could speak 17 langauges. Papua New Guinea has over 700 languages, so anyone growing up there naturally learn many. Your neighbours might speak a different language. In fact the woman I knew, her grandparents spoke a different language.
And growing up in this sort of enviornment trains your ability to learn language, so she could pick up and learn other languages just by hearing them.
So it's not impossible. Just tought I'd correct you there.

I'm hopeless at languages. I have no ability in that particular intelligence. I can be told a foreign word a hundred times and I'll forget it pretty much immediately. Which annoys the hell out of my Hong Kong girlfriend. If it's written down I can remember it, but my aural memory is hopeless. Which also explains my complete lack of musical ability. I couldn't hum a favourite song I've heard a hundred times. I simply can't remember how it goes!

Anyway, no-one has yet mentioned the obvious language all posters here are fluent in:

Sir Richard Burton (http://www.knowledgerush.com/kr/jsp/db/author.jsp?authorId=255&authorName=Sir+Richard+Burton).
He had an unusual facility with languages and in his lifetime, he learned 25 languages and forty dialects. He was able to impersonate a native-speaker in many regions which earned him special commissions with the army.

It's not that I know of, and none of my Japanese friends recognized it at first, they just thought I had made a mistake. I actually just made it up to screw with people's heads, nice guy that I am.

Anyhow I wonder how many ppl would change what they wrote down in the thread if I were to empose that "knowing a language" is being able to conversate correctly in the very country where they speak the language.

Not me. I claimed native English - 24 years in the US, conversational Japanese with a fair bit of the Osaka dialect - I have lived in Japan 13 years with 10 being in Osaka and can communicate effecitvely in Japanese well enough to sit down to a family dinner at my GF's house and participate in the conversation, and I claimed a little Spanish - grew up in Texas surrounded by enough native and non-native speakers to pick up a small but useful vocabulary plus I spent a month in central Mexico as a student - it's very rusty however.

I speak Finnish as my main language, eli puhun suomea äidinkielenäni.

I speak fluent English (I got 10/10 of it at school!)

I speak some Swedish, since we have to learn it :sniper: , grr, varför måste vi studera svenska språk, när du inte måste studera finska språk?

I've been studying French for over an year now, mais je ne parles pas francais bien...

Now I'm trying to learn Estonian, which is very similar to Finnish :) . Te jotka räägide eesti keelt, opettaga mind ;) .

Sorry, Estonians, I'm bad at Estonian. If someone would like to teach me, my MSN address is carman1@mail.com . I like your language! Finno - Ugric languages rule!!
I thought you had changed your laws now so that Swedish is no longer a compulsory subject in Finnish schools?
Anyhow, we don't have to learn Finnish in Sweden simply because it's not an official language here-and of course Swedish is in Finland.

I speak one language really fluently: Norwegian
I speak English fairly well.
I know a little Russian, will try to learn more at a later date (have been busy lately).
I learned som German at school, but have forgot most of it now (was never really good).
Can understand Swedish and Danish, though it's hard to understand written Swedish or spoken Danish.

English is primary, Spanish secondary, although at this point I've forgotten quite a bit. I had more practice when my Ecuadorian abuelita lived with me. I can pick out some words in French and Italian when I hear it, but I'm pretty ignorant. I'm going to make sure my little ones can speak at least three. If I'm lucky I'll learn a little bit along with them.

Tell what languages you speak, and please BE HONEST if you only speak English put that. Don't start saying you speak 22 languages just to make yourself look good, because everyone knows that's not possible.I speak English, French, Castellano, understand Italian (my sister is learning it and quizzes me verbally), am learning Valenciano (but I could definitely use a proper teacher...), am learning Mandarin, understand basic written German...
I would like to learn Russian, Arabic, Ojibwee, Japanese, Cantonese, Polish, Basque, Hindi... I have a list somewhere, can't find it just now.
Keep in mind that I'm only 17. I would like to study languages and linguistics in university, and I have no doubt that I am capable of learning twenty (or more). It has been done.

I know English and Spanish fluently, I have a small French vocabulary and a decent grasp of the grammar so I can converse a little, and I know considerable Latin. I also know many, many disjointed words in ancient Greek, but I couldn't string together a sentence with them unless it was a prefabricated saying like Gnôthi sauton ("Know yourself" —Socrates). Occasionally I'll know a random, very exotic tidbit like Sanskrit bhrngara meaning "gold" or Aramaic alaph meaning "to teach" or Tibetan gewa meaning "virtue" or Tupi tinga meaning "white" or Plains Cree lipwil meaning "frying pan," etc. :-D

English and Navalese.

Navalese is very easy to learn and many people who serve in the Navy speak it well. All one has to do is is insert some form of the word "F**k" in between most every other word spoken.

Example: That fat f**k section leader stuck poor f**king me with the g***amn f***king midwatch again! F**k!!

well my irish isnt that great.but in ireland we have to learn it,its a pathetic attempt to stop the language from dying out.its forced on children at an early age(4 or 5),most likely because children are meant to find learning languages easier when they're young.unfortunately irish is thought before history so children have no idea why they're being made learn this language, and by time they find out they're sick of having it forced down their throats and they dont especially want to learn it.

English is my native language (American English, as should be obvious by the way I spell things), and I'm nearly fluent in Spanish, which I've studied for about nine years now (I'm thinking of becoming a college Spanish professor). I'm also taking an intro French class but I doubt I'll ever learn more than the basics of "Hello," "Where is the bathroom," and "I'd like a beer and some pretzels, please."
