Funny that obesity is the number one health concern in America...overconsumption...I'm not going to go into that "there are starving children in Africa" cliche, but really people, when you eat yourself to death, that says something bad about the state of life.

Fat stupid people with a multitude of cable channels glued to the sofa eating junk food forever, getting more and more fat and more and more stupid. What I can't understand about people this fat is how do they get this size?
I couldn't afford to eat enough to get to that size, even working, let alone just sitting there living off the benefit.
The ppl I have absolutely no sympathy for are the ones who look after them. You hear about lots of them too fat to leave their house/room/sofa. So there's obviously someone else buying the food and giving it to them. I remember a TV doco about fat people and it had one 20 yr old who was so fat he couldn't leave his room. And his mother was crying and complaining about how he just wouldn't stop eating and would just pig out all the time. He would sit and eat a whole big jar of peanut butter in one sitting.
All I could think was: 'who was buying this crap food for him? If he can't leave, why don't you just buy a couple of lettuces for the week and leave him there'.

Anyways, I agree with what was said about the people buying the 'murder weapons' and handing it to them. Kinda makes them accessory to murder, doesn't? I remember seeing a show that had a special on this woman who was so fat she looked like a stranded whale, lying on a few mattresses, and her husband, who was skinny as hell himself, who kept feeding her junk food that had "lethal" all over it. Ok... *takes out her copy of the Guiness Book of World Records 2004*
Let's look up the world's fattest people!!
The heaviest man... Jon Brewer of Minnoch, USA, 6'1". His maximum weight peaked in 1978 when he weighed 1400 lbs, or 635 kg. When he died in 1983, he weighed only 798lbs or 362kg.
The heaviest woman... Rosalie Bradford, USA. Her weight peaked at 1,190lbs, 540 kg in January of 1987, and since then had been put on a controlled diet and by February of 1994 was down to 283lbs or 128 kg.
The largest waistline... belonged to Walter Hudson, USA. It measured 119 inches (or 3.02 metres), when his weight peaked at 1,197lbs, or 543 kg.

Regardless, if you ever go outside of the U.S., you almost never see overweight OR obese people. Any country I've been to, all I see are physically fit-looking people. As Al-Kair put it, it is overweight or obese. I have seen reports like the one you mentioned. The current "overweight" category includes several pro. baseball, football, and hockey players who are actually in quite good shape.
So, in an effort to make one feel better about one's own country, one would put down the United States and say that we are just a bunch of fat slobs who still managed to never lose a war. (Vietnam could be argued, but lets not go down that road right now. . .it wasn't really a "war" anyways)
This leads to another question; Why is it that anyone can insult the United States and her people, but if an American insults any other country or nationality, he/she is called a "racist"?

Sorry, I didn't realise that there's so many pro. Athletes in the US. Millions I suppose?
To be considered obese, you need a BMI of 30 or over. That equates to being about 20 kilos (45 pounds) over a normal weight for the average height man (15kgs for women). They take into consideration your body shape and fitness levels as well when compiling these reports (usually a hip to waist ratio, which should be 0.95 or less for men and 0.8 or less for women to be healthy).
Statistically, pro athletes not going to alter the figures much at all. The fact is the majority of Americans are overwieght or obese. You could even argue that obese is the majority as there's more obese than any other body type. True, not an outright majority, but if you broke it down into each sub-category (anorexic, underweight, normal, overweight, obese, morbidly obese) the biggest (excuse the pun) category is obese.
And the trend over the last few decades is been towards increasing numbers of obese. So all those 'overweight' (read fat) ppl are just obese in training!
So 'numnuts' Al-Kair, your reply?
BTW to Aesthetia, you are seriously underweight! Your BMI is 16.9. You should consider gaining weight - 20 pounds (10kgs) to get to a healthy weight.

That's why a simple weight/height ratio isn't enough--muscle is actually denser than fat! Aren't there better calculations than that?
It's not the density, it's the fact that ppl with high LBM can be considered overweight or even obese using these tables. But it is a good rule of thumb for the majority of the population.
There's several better calculations:
1. The most accurate way is to dissect you and seperate the body fat from the rest of you.
2. However if you want to be alive to know the results, the next best way is to dunk you in a pool of cold water. Fat is less dense than water, so floats. They winch you in on a weighing machine and dunk you down. You need to breath out when under water to get a more accurate measure (which is hard to do pyschologically). This gives you your LBM (Lean Body Mass) and thus Body fat can be measured from it. Very accurate if done properly.
3. You can buy scales that send an electrical signal through one foot and measure the time it takes to come out the other one (you need to input your height and sex). This is because fat and muscle are different conductors. I think fat slows down the signal. It can give you a fairly accurate reading, but if you're sweating (especially if your feet are wet) or if you're an athlete with more muscle mass, you can get high readings.
4. A simpler way is to get your Doctor (or Gym instructor) to use a pair of calipers to measure your skinfolds at specific sites on your body (usually tricep, scapula, obliques, next to tummy button and quadricep or combination of the 5). Fat is subcutaneous (sits above the muscle and below the skin) so the calipers grab mostly fat. Add them up and compare them to tables according to age and sex (compiled from the dead bodies, see #1). This gives you a general idea but can be very inaccurate, if done improperly. I once had an instructor take 4 readings and use the table for 3 (so was told I was obese). I also had another one take the readings through my clothes! If the calipers aren't calibrated properly, the person testing you uses the wrong sites (the places on your body are very specific and a few inches out can alter the result a lot). It's very tricky. Ideally you need a few readings. I did a Fitness Instructor course a few years back and praticising on each other we would get ranges of up to 10%. I was tested and got 8% from one person, 12% from another, 14%, and 17%. The average being 13% which was most likely considering my fitness level, strength and general body shape.
Finally, these tables were designed in Europe, so if you're from a different race (especially Polynesians) you'll probably get an inaccurate reading. Also body type: ppl with high levels of muscle mass always come out with high fat % in these tests.
Measuring your Hip and Waist and dividing Hip by Waist is a easy, simple way of accessing your fatness. A ratio above 0.95 for men and 0.8 for women is unhealthy.

Ah, true, perhaps some of us really got some anger problems, but we shouldn't be so proud of our "oh so low" overweight or obese ratio, My father once told me a story, when he was in hospital because of some OP he met some guy that was there for a weight reduction, (honestly that guy was so fat he could live from Mineral Water only for more than 6 weeks).
Anyway his mother always managed to smuggle in some of that "healthy and strong food" because she was afraid he would starve to death in there, and the doctors managed not to notice that...
When they told him to get up because he lost enough weight (astonishingly he really lost some weight, just not enought as you will see), he did so. It took two seconds for his entire connective tissue to be torn apart (it had weakened, during the six weeks in hospital partly due to the lack of movement, partly due to the "healthy" food from his mother). The doctors tried to save him with an emergency OP, but they where unable to compensate the heavy loss of blood and incestines...

And according to the national heart, lung and blood institue of the national health institutes http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/guidelines/obesity/ob_home.htm 97 million adults in the US are obese. This is a fairly obvious case of greedy dumbass eating too much food. Neglect my skinny white ass. Am I supposed to take food away from fat people?
She was One With The Couch! You don't have to take the frickin' food away from the fat woman. But do you continue to deliver buckets o' chicken to her thoroughly soiled self?!
Neglect, hell! Sounds like Murder to me!

Are there figures for the number of obese kids? That is kind of a bigger problem, as adults can generally do as they please, but kids are supposed to be under the supervision of guardians
I recall reading somewhere that the number of obese kids in America is close to 20%. So not as bad as adults, but considering this is meant to be the most active time of your life, pretty worrying.
Lemme explain - he said it was "a metaphor for america", not "a thing that happens every day in america". That means that even if it only happens just this once, in a poetic way it can symbolise some facets of american life.
Yeah, and Europe is like that sports team that can't handle not being on top anymore.

Of course this isn't an american problem only. Scientists belive that US is about 20 yeas before Europe. What actions have the american governemnt taken against the menace? In Sweden we are right now discussing raised taxes for high-calorie food, something US have tried, if yes, how did that turn out?
