MADRID (Reuters) - A Spanish man tried to have his wife charged with domestic abuse because she refused to have sex with him on five consecutive days, Spanish newspaper El Sur reported on Friday.

The middle-aged man from Seville -- the city of Don Juan and Carmen -- said her refusals amounted to "degrading treatment" and domestic abuse, a term used more often to describe wife-battering.

The judge shelved the case, Andalusia-based El Sur reported.

now honestly, what kind of man thinks that just because he married a woman, he has the right to have sex on demand?

Shit, he'll be lucky if she ever gives it up again. Sometimes I think Lysistrata ought to be required reading for every male--show them just how precarious our position in the world truly is.

A Catholic. =) Of course, he's not supposed to want it - just to do it.

Well, in Islam it is the duty of both the husband and the wife to please each other. A spouse should be understanding if their partner does not want to have marital relations, however it is the husband's duty to satisfy his wife sexually, and hers as well. Denying him for 5 days in Islam, if just to annoy the husband, is not allowed.

In any marraige, sex is going to be an important issue. In my opinion, it's important for a man and a woman who are going to get married to first talk about what their respective attitudes are towards sex and what each of them expects from the marraige. If there are differences in the two, then these need to be reconciled, somehow. If one expects a lot of sex, and the other has little intention of putting out (regardless of which gender is on which end of the libido spectrum), then this is going to cause a problem.

The same can be said of other major issues regarding the relationship, including children and money.

That said, five consecutive days is far too brief to be complaining about; she could merely be having a bad week. The man needs to exercise a little more patience. :p

So you are saying that a relationship can't work if the two have different sexual drives? There is much more to a relationship than sex.

No, that's not what he was saying. He was saying that sex is a compatibility issue in any relationship. If two people in a relationship have two different sex drives, it will cause problems, like it or not. It's not the only issue that couples have to deal with, but it is something that deserves attention, and you'd be naive not to think so.

Its true that there's more to a relationship than just sex :fluffle: , but you'd be amazed at how much of a problem it can be when two people have different expectations and needs. It can be very hard to deal with, even when you really would never have said it was an issue before. :headbang:

Hmm. Interesting. There's a somewhat similar doctrine in Judaism- marriage is mainly for procreation, but it's a "duty" to have sex, even when one knows one can't get pregnant.

It is also the husband's "duty" to sexually satisfy his wife. Rabbinic law forbids husbands from taking jobs that will keep them away from their wives for extended periods of time, as they would be incapable of fulfilling their "spousal duties".

In Judaism, the wife decides when she wants to have sex. If the husband denies her, it's grounds for a divorce.

I wonder what the view is on a case like this, where the sexes are reversed...

Would that life were that predictable - you never can tell how well you're going to be matched once the romantic pre-marital phase is over. Libidos rise and fall over time, not always in phase. Plus jobs stress you out, kids stress you out, or your partner's sudden desire to dress 20 years younger/older turns you off, or you've just started a really hot affair with someone at work ....... whoops! Did I just say that out loud?
