An oddity I find on the general board

I learned growing up that two topics of conversation that are supposed to be taboo are politics & religion. I've even gotten into an occassional discussion on both. That doesn't stop me from wondering, why do they seem to be the two most popular topics of conversation here on general?

i think a more pertinant question would be why you were taught those topics should be taboo. they are important issues, among the most important humans can face when we try to live in groups, and nobody should teach a child that talking about important issues is wrong.

Cause its fun and I like to confound those kool-aid drinkers who think Kerry is the answer to every problem going in the world today. I have even heard that he fed a large crowd with 2 fishes and 3 loaves of bread AND turned some water into wine once!!

The topics of politics and religion are taboo because they invariably start heated arguments. In normal day-to-day life that's not desirable. Here arguments are almost the point of the exercise. This is kind of a debate forum.

Bizarre: certainly it is not a case that a taboo surrounds these two topics where I am from - Northern Ireland. True, there exist certain situations in which it is appropriate to ask someone what religion they are (ie: whether they are Protestant or Catholic),and certain situations in which it is not, but that is more a case of social etiquette, rather than pussyfooting around taboo subjects.

These are two most important things to people that like to judge another.

taboo topics are easier to debate, just more pointless to do so
