movies that became tv shows
I was watching MASH last night, and playing the MASH drinking game with a pal, and I realized that two of my favorite shows were originally movies. IMO the shows were better than the original films. Anyone have a favorite show that started as a film? Anyone have a favorite film that was butchered by the TV show of the same name?

I don't know about my favorite, but I thought the Highlander tv show was pretty good. It made no logical sense when you look at the storyline of the original film, but I think they did okay with what they had.

What's the M*A*S*H drinking game? I love the show (and yeah, the movie wasn't as good. Allen Alda made a much better Hawkeye than Donald Sutherland), but this would make it that much better!

Pretty simple, drink when a rank is mentioned. If you want to make it more interesting make it 4 sips for officer ranks and one for enlisted men. If you want to be vicious assign a different ammount for each rank in one drink increments starting at 1 for private, 2 for corporal, etc.

Thanks! Well, I've got the first 4 seasons (I think) on DVD, so it's going to be a fun weekend!

any disney movie made into a tv show always ruined the movie.. aladin comes to mind offhand... I think there was one for lion king too, but making all the sequels sorta ruined it anyway
I've never been a fan of disney movies.

the aladdin movies sucked after the first one, they need to stop making sequels

When Stargate ended my friend leaned over and said "This fall, on FOX." so that seemed like a natural transition. Ferris Bueller's Day Off as a series was a trainwreck, better handled by it's rip-off Parker Lewis Can't Lose. Fame was silly as a movie, silly as a tv show (yes I watched it...shut up). I think that the show eclipsed the movie to the point that most don't remember the film came first. In the Heat of the Night is another chicken/egg switcher, and seemed like an odd thing to make a series out of. From the few episodes I saw they seemed to abandon the central conflict of the film all together.
I'm stuck on coming up with other transitions suddenly. Likely I'll come back to this...

How about a spinoff of a tv show that came from a movie? No, I'm not talking about "AfterMASH." I'm talking about Highlander: The Raven (http://imdb.com/title/tt0144714/). There's one for your bad tv thread, Walrus.
Here's a guilty pleasure, Buffy the vampire slayer. Awful film, but a decent TV show.

Oh, man. I scared over that. It was bad enough that I made excuses for the first Highlander series (brace yourselves-I even went to the theaters to watch the last Highlander movie because it merged the series and the movies......it did explain why McCloud didn't get 'the prize,' there was a secret group of immortals hiding out at a monistary to prevent anyone from getting it. Excuse me, someone wants my lunch money...)
The Raven....that was just all kinds of bad. I can't even type it out, shivers....

I'll admit it--so did I. By the time Endgame came around, it was impossible for there to be any real sense made of the series, but it was fascinating to watch them try. The way I figure it, in the four movies, the prize was won at least three times. I don't know if the prize actually came up in the second movie, because I was never able to actually get through the damn thing, and from all outward appearances, the writers of both the tv show and the later films just acted as if it didn't exist, which was for the best.
But by the time Raven came along, I'd pretty much had enough. I watched one episode of it, because I was having a bout of insomnia, I didn't know what it was or how bad it would be, and I liked looking at the actress who played Amanda. It didn't last.

There are four basic categories in this genre, cross-indexed by whether they started on film or TV, and whether they were good or bad.
Good Movie, Good TV
Example: MASH
Good Movie, Bad TV
Example: Clueless, My Big Fat Greek Wedding (albeit more arguably)
Bad Movie, Good TV
Example: Buffy the Vampire Slayer

They turned the Toxic Avenger, a great masterpiece of blood squirting art, into a made for children cartoon show. It’s only saving grace was that it’s utter cheesiness made it somewhat humorous. Apparently they even made a Sgt. Kabukiman NYPD cartoon show as well. I’ve never seen it, except for a preview and it looks cheesier that the Toxic Crusaders.
