SUV = Traitor
It's an unpatriotic act bordering on treason to buy a vehicle that uses that much fuel if you don't need it. Less demand for oil means less money going to states that fund terrorism. Also less demand for oil means it becomes less of a national security issue and we don't need to use our troops to defend the oil supply.

I do agree with you here to a point. It just depends on what your definition of a SUV is, is. I know jeep cherokees and other mid size suv's get better gas mileage than most sports cars and trucks. So are people that drive around with old classic cars and mustangs corvettes all unpatriotic. People that drive in toyota 4 bangers but with large tires so they get 10 mpg unpatriotic? I dont know this would be a very complex issue to deal with.

Extend the CAFE standards to light trucks. That would drastically cut our dependance on foreign oil.

this is silly.
we buy the vast majority of our oil from Canada, Mexico and Venezuela.
SUV oil consuption is a tiny fraction of the overall vehicle oil consumption which is only a small part of overall oil consumption
In any case, it isnt oil thats the problem, its gasoline. We havent built a refinery in over 30 years because of the tree huggers.
i will dig out the article when i get a chance.

First of all, Fuck Greenpeace. Secondly, most major gas station chains buy saudi oil to refine it into gasoline. The price hike is in part due to stagnant refinery capacity, but also due to increased consumption in the USA and China.

True, but it's possible, and prudent to reduce dependance on it.

Elimination of the SUV would only be a tiny drop in consumption.
You are assuming people would go to Saturns and what not as an alternative.
Most likely they would switch to trucks and minivans so the gas savings would not be that great.....

Right you are!
Find me a vehicle that will fit three car seats in it and get good gas mileage. Even a Saturn SUV gets around 20MPG downhill on the interstate.
IMHO there's too much oil in the world. I'm just trying doing my part by burning it up as quickly as possible. The sooner we rid the world of oil, the sooner my vasoline powered engine makes me a billionaire!
Said this before, will say it again.. it is impossible for a person living in a 1st world country to survive without oil.
It is however becoming more possible.... there are alternative fuels being developed, and before you mention it...the University of Alberta (in Canada) has developed plastics made from canola oil instead of petroleum. Nonetheless, I doubt that we will wean ourselves from oil until it becomes absolutely critical...simply because we are so used to it and resist change, and because the oil lobby is still incredibly powerful. Fair? No. The "first world" produces more waste per capita than the "third world" and North America alone accounts for the largest percentage of oil consumption, despite only containing a fraction of the world's population. Time to stop being gluttons.
A company called Changing World Technologies has invented a very efficient process for turning any organic waste (paper, meat scraps, food waste, even sewage) into oil and natural gas. Let's subsidize construction of oil production plants here in the US and cut our consumption so we can stop buying it overseas. It would cut funding to terrorists, and help the trade deficit.
By the way, I live in a rural area (and pretty much need to drive to get anywhere), but once a decent electric or vegetable oil-run car is produced, I'll get one. Also, our house is heated by geothermal (free heat from the earth) energy, and we are slowly switching to solar power to get off the grid. It's actually been cheaper to do this than continue to pay skyrocketing energy prices (thanks derugulation, you've pushed me green).

It's called biomass energy and they didn't actually invent it...they may have patented a process to make it more efficient, but you can do it with a plastic bucket and a homemade methane gas collector (like a balloon). It's nice to see that more companies are taking this seriously though.

I totally believe that we will see the oil situation go critical in my lifetime and I'm just shy of 30 right now. The whole "unpatriotic" thing is a big bunch of garbage. It's designed to make stupid people feel good about themselves for not thinking and being big dorks. It's not just SUV's or autos, it's MANY factors all together pushing this situation to the crisis point. We need to reduce dependance on oil, period. There should be encouragement to develop alternate energy and materials sources, both on a large (corporate) and small (personal) scale. I wouldn't be suprised to learn that the information regarding these technologies are being subtly supressed by...someone. Oil interests, mainstream media, politicians... I'm not a huge theorist, just know what I feel on this one. Yes I'm not well versed in all the details, but I just call it how I see it.

I bought my SUV 8 years ago. It is a Honda Passport. It was actually a station wagon in disguise. If I went out and bought a new car right now, it probably would be a minivan.
You think people owning SUVs would want us to have alternate energy. There is only so much ol in the world and if demand goes down then so does the price. They have to pay the biggest premium. If I use no or little gas why the hell would I care if we run out?

I suppose you can also propose something that is supposed the destroy what I proposed for any proposal.
That really doesnt actually affect the argument. People who drive SUVs should be the most concerned about the future of oil.
