The fatal flaw of defending other Americans, BY a patriotic American

No parody intended...

Using my High School and the words of my AVID teacher to get me to this conclusion, I have come up with...this conclusion. Sue me, I'm no English Major.

My conclusion: It is pointless to defend the actions or opinions of other Americans from the onslaught of ignorant and/or intelligent comments and opinions by others, unless you take part in such actions and/or share such opinions with other Americans. Why? Because stereotypes, ignorant-minds, and quickly-conslusive people rule the world. Americans, Germans, Australians, Canadians, there are no such thing as a non-ignorant or dumbass member of ANY country. Unfortunatly, those people are usually the most vocal people. Thus, they spread their words faster than an intelligent person can spread their argument. Coming to the conclusion that rash, unintelligent, and ignorant opinions make up many opinions of today's world. Not all, but a good number of them.

Another reason, is because many other Americans (this is where my High School comes into play) are simply either uncoopertive or just plain old running in the opposite direction, if you know what I mean. The average student in my High School is lazy and is failing or barely passing their classes. The average American is apparently an overweight person who holds incorrect or unintelligent opinions. Why do I find myself defending such people? Why do I find myself denying facts? Why do I find myself saying "no, that's not it!" When, in fact, it's the truth that I find hard to comprehend?

So, fellow Americans, I encourage you not to gloat for your country, but to be vocal about our nation's ideals and principles it was founded on. Don't run around saying "God Bless America!" rather, say "Freedom and Justice for all!" or even "Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness is MY life!" Of course, God Bless America is still acceptable if that's how you feel. You have good reasons to say such things, I'm sure, and not being sarcastic, and you SHOULD say it.

Man, I think too much and type too little. You can't imagine what more was floating around my head.

Another reason is over exsposure.

Something is always taking place in our country, or becuase of our country, and it always gets a lot of attention.
So, you tend to see more of the seedy, or plain stupid things we do, more often.

Your countries have just as many stupid people in them, or a comparible amount based on your Idiot-per-capita...

Dont pretend that you dont. Stupid people are everywhere and have taken over the earth.

You just get to see more of ours.

So very true. But. Most of countries are small and meaningless (like mine) while your country's actions affect the whole world. That's why everyone is more worried about your idiots. They have more power.

Well yes of course as in the democracy the parliament represents the people...Can you name the idiot's in power in my country? (if you know the president I can tell you that the president has no real power in my country.)

God Bless America...

I'm sorry you feel that way. When I was in Panama getting shot the first time, I was an idealist, I was young and thought every American supported me and I was doing good for the country. I came back and realized I had about as much affect on this country as a guy serving a Big Mac at McDonald's, nobody cared (granted the parades were far over when I got back).

Then I went to the Gulf and got shot the second time...I knew nobody was going to throw me a party or anything, but what the hell, America deserved defending, and damn it I was a partiot. Again, I got back way after the party was over, and felt like I accomplished less than I had in Panama as every liberal hated us for being over there in the first place, and Bush Sr. lost his election for reasons I thought we had fought for.

But you know what, now that I am older, and wiser I don't take it personal. Bush lost due to politics, and all we see right now is politics. I fought for America, and I love America, and regardless of how fat, lazy and stupid many people are in this country, I'll die knowing that although I didn't see the parades, most people appreciated what we tried to do. Regardless of how many people line up to throw rocks at my posts, I see one every now and then that agrees with me, and says "Good job." We are never going to win the prize for being popular, but that shouldn't stop Americans from ever doing the right thing.

I'll protect and defend my brother Americans in battle regardless of them throwing their medals back at me, or calling others baby killers. I hope my two boys do the same when it is their time. I know I'm not popular, but I'm damn proud to be an American.

*shrugs*

If you are the centre of the universe, expect your actions (both good and bad, representative and non-representative) to get more coverage than the mere "satellite" countries that orbit glorious planet America. :p [j/k]

The fact that nutters and blowhards tend to be louder and get more noticed than reasonable people is not a new notion. The flawed preconception that the typical American is a loud mouthed egotistical racist fool is no different than all Irish being classed as drunks, all Australians are illiterate outback hicks who chase crocodiles for sport, all Frenchmen are smelly and arrogant... ad inifitum.

Bottom line - if you don't think you need to correct people's preconceptions of your country and countrymen, don't. ;) Although, right here, I would like to sincerely apologise for Steve Irwin and Paul "Crocodile Dundee" Hogan - sorry :)

Thats an American. I personally dont see why we should have to conceal our pride. I have never been in the military, but almost all the men in my family were in the military. One of my grandfathers drove the troop landers on omaha beach. (I have his dogtags ^_^) My other grandfather served in the Korean war. My uncle served and died on duty in the US navy. My Father, served in the navy as well. He recieved a purple heart as well. These men and women give their live as services unselfishly in defense of this great country. A co-worker and I were arguing about this. he said that men were foolish to die for their country. And that he would run to canada before ever going to war. I responded to him, that If needed I would go to war. Not just for my country , but for my family, for people I never met, and for those who denouce and hate me. And I would ask for nothing in return. Because that is how you measure the worth of a man. And if everything else were irrelivant and you could give your life to dave another, would you do it? he never brought the subject up again. Proud to be an American.

Three cheers,

I have a grandfather who died in France, never had a chance to see his grave, but I'm sure the Frenchies are pissing on it on Friday nights.

His brother died on Okinawa, I did get to see his grave kind of, pretty much a tribute thing more than a grave.

I lost two uncles in Vietnam, and one came back nutty as a fruitcake from it.

That didn't stop me from joining the Corps, it made me want to join more...I'm closer to them than I ever could have been had I avoided service.

It is great that you're ready to fight for your country when it's under attack. But U.S. hasn't been attacked after WW2. If you're the one attacking, you can't be defending.

And I'm sorry I don't mean to oofend anyone. Going to war without a real thread is just different than defending your country. In WW2 Germany was a real thread to all western countries as was Japan. Always very thankful for your help back then.

Hey, soldiers don't pick the wars they fight in, we just do the grunt work. I get your point, no offense taken, but like I said, that's over our pay grade lol

Wow. I'm Australian and I love Americans, not because of what you do but what you believe in, your ideals. I love that. I wish Australians were as interested in freedom and liberty as you are but we've had such an easy ride mainly because Americans have helped defend us. We owe you the loyalty of faithful friends, and though you won't always find us supporting your view, you will always find us supporting your ideals. Patriotism is very differant to Australians, but we appreciate everything you've done, not just for us but for all people, and we look past the dangers of today to a long future of friendship together.

You make mistakes, because you aren't perfect. We like that too!

We know we have bunged up some things, were not perfect. We always think were doing the right thing at the time, but as in Vietnam...Oooops...

I love Aussies as well, my brother is there somewhere, not sure where though, met some girl and is busy with her.

I love most European nations also, I just can't stomach the French, and I am half French lol

Ignorant paresseux et odeur

Overall, I think we have a bright future once we get the middle east worked out. It will take a long time, but that place has been a danger zone for hundreds of years. I think they deserve some peace and rest and democracy for awhile

People die for the wrong reason. I am not proud of war.

Don't you dare tell people what it is to be American. Is someone less of a countryman because they didn't shed blood? Is that it? A big macho egotistical battle to see how many people you can kill in one family "in the name of your country". Fly an American flag, say your proud but at the end of the day George Bush is no more American then John Kerry and you are no more American than a bum on the street, because America is everything, fat, strong, lazy, powerful, stupid and ground breaking, you must accept the shit that comes along with how bloody brilliant you are. America is the worst and the best. Accept your downfalls and people will respect you more.

I am not measured by how much blood I will spill for you.

Don't say we. In recent polls America in Australia was rated us the highest threat to terror in the world over Iraq and Afghanistan. Either be royality or don't say we.

And as for this crap:

You racist prick. Your just another person celebrating death if that's the sick pathetic attitude your taking. Build a god damn bridge and get over yourself.

As a race we have to look past the dangers of today to a brighter future tomorrow. Free people all around the world are instrumental in that quest. Australians, Americans and all people cannot achieve this alone. There are those today who only see the end, the danger of now. But we can do better than that. We are in difficult times, we have had difficult times in the past but that does not mean we cannot look forward to the future. I believe most people are genuinely grateful for the sacrifice paid by those in blood for freedom and liberty around the globe.

You cite polls and the disrespect of the few. Well all I can say is the only satisfaction we can draw from our actions is a sure conscience and a satisfaction in success. Most Australians are disillusioned with Americas actions of late, but this is not something that will challenge a friendship like ours. We can, if we chose to, build a better life for our world.

No-one celebrates death, but we take sober satisfaction in the survival of liberty around the world.
