Amerigo, this is just a theory, but you might want to try skipping a day or two without signing on to Gmail. I know, I know, agony, but it might get you an invite. I'm not sure. It happened twice for me, whether by sheer coincidence or what...I don't know.
I have one account. I would never take advantage of Gmail's beta service by inviting myself ;)
For the record, I do have invites but these are saved for my friends and such. No, I mean, real friends, not online contacts. Yes, I have real friends. Really.
