For future refrence, it has always been perfectly legal with the proper paper work to own full automatic (including military issue) weaposn, such as M16s, M60s, AK-47s, MP5s, and the like. This is mostly done by collectors. Get a class three liscense, and you can own a full auto weapon.

Provided that your state hasnt banned them, as is the case in Washington, while fully automatics are legal in Oregon.

oh terra they will explain all that to you at the gun shop
just keep a few sensible shopping tips in mind
dont buy at the first shop you come to, do some comparison shopping so you can be sure to get a good buy on your new kalishnikov
if they dont have it in stock, DONT ORDER IT, for god's sake the ban could go back into effect at any time and then you would be out of luck
dont forget to bring a couple pieces of ID. most states can do a background check on the spot, you dont want to be running back home to get your SS #
a lesser known gun can do the same job as the prestige model, consider the price differential between the big boys and the lesser knowns.
keeping too many assault weapons at your home may bring you to the attention of the ATF. be sensible, you can only use one assault rifle at a time, put the extra money into ammo.

You don't actually need a class 3. That's a dealer's liscence, and costs, I believe, $3,000. You just need to pay the $200 NFA tax, find a class 3 dealer to transfer the gun (all machineguns have to be registered to be legal), and wait a few months for all the paperwork to go through. However, I think the cheapest full-autos are still over $5000, so most people can't own one.
