Running a 5K - the day after

So you probably know that I ran a 5K in honor of the 9/11 firefighters.

Thing is tho, for all of today, my quads have been killing me - I've been streching them like crazy, unfortunately they still hurt like crazy? Any advice on how to get rid of this pain?

you should have stretched yesterday.

but yeah, i'm guessing that tylenol and not moving them might help.

maybe a nice warm bath? or some icy hot/rub a535.

well, try some rub a5-35 or icy hot or something like that (i think those kinds of things are located together in a drug store) but yeah, some kind of cream that soothes sore muscles.

Don't move, that's sure to work. How have you been stretching, what kind of stretching I mean?

A 5k has messed you up? Try running more than once per year. ;)

The important thing (besides general fitness) is a good warm-up and cool down. Before a run I jog about 200 meters and then stretch (don't stretch cold if you can avoid it). After the run take 1-2 minutes to catch your breath and then stretch. If you are still tight then do light stretching over the next few hours.

Arguably the warm-up and stretch is more important than the post-run stretch.

In this case you're probably just screwed, so take the opportunity to enjoy the sensation of being alive!

If you pulled your quads then rest is most important. But quads are pretty hard to pull compared to other muscles and it is unlikely that you'd pull both. So assuming you know you haven't pulled a muscle or muscles, and nothing else works, why not try a light run (with proper stretching)?

lol Stirner. He's right, try running more than once per year. Oh, and stretching never does anything, contrary to what everyone believes.

You know why you have pain? Because your body probably isn't used to running. I go running about 3 kilometres every morning. The first day I went running 3K, I couldn't walk at all the next day. But I still pushed myself to run the next day anyways. And the day after, and the day after even though it hurt like hell until after about 4 days, my body grew used to it and I didn't feel a thing. Infact, I feel healthier than ever like this.

Also, if you're going to continue running everyday (which I doubt, since you just did it for 9/11), you should take Creatine (it's an amazing superb bodybuilding and sports supplement, see: http://www.absolute-creatine.com/ for more information). Drink lots of water too, and for God's sake, EAT PROTEIN!! Eat a huge steak or buy some amino acids at your local healthfood/vitamin store! Your muscles probably hurt because your body needs protein to rebuild the muscles and begin protein-synthesis.

Yes, also, if you can, take vitamin C if you're drinking lots of water as well. It helps flush out all that lactic acid in your muscles (that nasty stuff that makes your muscles burn while you work out and ache afterwards).

Anyone need anymore bodybuilding/excersize tips? Ask me! ;)
