Blast, Mushroom Cloud Reported in N. Korea
Major Explosion Followed by Mushroom Cloud Reported in North Korea on Key Communist Regime Date

The Associated Press

SEOUL, South Korea Sept. 11, 2004 — A large explosion occurred in the northern part of North Korea, sending a huge mushroom cloud into the air on an important anniversary of the communist regime, South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported Sunday.

Citing an unidentified source in Beijing, Yonhap said the explosion happened on Thursday in Yanggang province near the border with China. The damage and crater left by the explosion in Kim Hyong Jik county was big enough to be noticed by a satellite, the source said.

"We understand that a mushroom-shaped cloud about 2.2 miles to 2.5 miles in diameter was monitored during the explosion," Yonhap quoted an unidentified diplomatic source in Seoul as saying.

North Korea was founded on Sept. 9, 1948. Leader Kim Jong Il uses the occasion to stage performances and other events to bolster loyalty among the impoverished North Korean population.

Experts have speculated that North Korea might use a major anniversary to conduct a nuclear-related test, though there was no immediate indication that the reported explosion on Thursday was linked to Pyongyang's efforts to develop nuclear weapons.

On Saturday, North Korea said recent revelations that South Korea conducted secret nuclear experiments involving uranium and plutonium made the communist state more determined to pursue its own nuclear programs.

The South Korean experiments, conducted in 1982 and 2000, were likely to further complicate the already stalled six-nation talks aimed at dismantling the North's nuclear development. South Korea has said the experiments were purely for research and did not reflect a desire to develop weapons.

On April 22, train wagons at a railway station exploded in the North Korean town of Ryongchon, killing 160 people and injuring an estimated 1,300, according to some estimates. The blast was believed to have been sparked by a train laden with oil and chemicals that hit power lines.

The source in Beijing that told Yonhap about the explosion last week said it was reportedly bigger than the train explosion in Ryongchon.

Way to assess those potential threats, George.

Well, you see-Bush invaded Iraq on the pretext that while being a general bastard, he was trying to get nuclear weapons. While he did have people telling him that Iraq did, he had people also saying he didn't. What's relivant here is Il was being just as much of a bastard and wouldn't stop talking about the nuclear weapons he was going to make. But for some reason, and that reason just might be thick, slick, made from dinosaurs...Saddam was more of a threat. Now we're all up in Iraq and there is nothing, meanwhile the guy who has missles that can actually reach the continental US and has a beef also has nuclear warheads. All the time we could have spent dealing with that we spent dealing with Iraq. If you had paid attention, many many many people pointed out that N. Korea was more of a threat then Iraq, but for some thick slick made from dead dinosaurs reason we went after Iraq instead...

Hope that helps.

the US never would have invaded if they knew Iraq didn't have wmd. Who the hell would be stupid enough to invade a country with high powered weaponary?

The US wouldn't be able to win a war against North Korea. Bush knows this, that's why he's not applying his 'Iraq rules'.

The only way the US could defeat North Korea is to nuke the place, but then we all lose. :(

Humour them with aid, and wait for the time they fall apart from within, without the need to lash out and nuke the west as the regime dies.To do anything else risks the deaths of millions.

Im not so sure the US could have handled North Korea by invading it-
I cant help but wonder if China would sit back and watch the US invade North Korea- for that matter would the US even get permission to use its bases in South Korea//Japan to attack NK?

I think Bush is waiting for John Kerry to make his visit to North Korea to get Kim's approval, then we'll nuke them...YEAH!!!!

Don't you find it odd that when the Gulf War was on, the majority of US troops wore protective suits because they were afraid of the WMD that Iraq DID have, yet when the US troops invaded Iraq in 2003 they didn't have these protective suits on, even though they were going deep into Iraq?

Hint: There was no WMD.

Are your posts actually sarcasm or for real?

If they're for real, you're possibly the warmest and most compasionate conservative I've ever seen on a forum. :)

An attack against N. Korea risks some very heavy duty warfare and I doubt that China would want the US as neighbours?

There's also the fact that we like Los Angeles. Maybe it's a bit smoggy, but a Korean nuke wouldn't help that much.

But I'm all for nuking Kerry :D
