The word "gay" means "happy"

I object to Homosexuals taking this word for themselves.

Yeah, but eliminating a word from slang takes a long time, Ideas about life are not easily forgotten, and in the past, being gay was viewed as an extremely bad thing, so today's slang reflects that. If you want it out of the mainstream, all it will take is time.
I respect people who are gay and do not really care, it is their life choice, let them be they way want to be, but slang terms cannot be pulled out of a mainstream by way of a simple request.

Gay is not only a noun. Look it up... its also an adjective, so it is correct grammatically.

Homophobia is an awful thing... and I oppose the use of "gay" as a derogative term. However, if people want to use it, I'm not going to impose upon their rights of free speech.

If 'gay' does not equal 'insult'
Then Homosexual does not equal 'Happy' which is what 'gay' really means.
So until 'gay' isnt used incorrectly by one group, I will continue to use it incorrectly my own way.

ughh, I hate that flipping word whether used pejoratively or not. We didn't ask for it. I know I sure as hell didn't. Want it? Have it! It has way too many connotations, none too good and mostly fed by stereotypes. It's bastardization by today's youth culture is not helping things either.

I'm a regular average guy who happens to be ughhh... gay, though when people hear the word they tend to think some other stuff like tranvestitism or the typical FLLLAAAAAAAAMING homosexual. I blame that lousy word for the fact I didn't crawl out of the closet 'til I was 26..AHHHHH!!!

I hate to say this, but if you want people to stop calling people gay you need to find another scapegoat. I mean in the old days basterd was omg, a horrible insult. Today people who would tecnically be basterds arent even called that. Start making ape or bacterium an insult and maybe it catch on.

Yes, true, but the fact that there were hundreds of other terms of abuse for homosexual men in common use when it was socially acceptable in the western world to be anti-homosexual, and that these words have mainly fallen out of use in favour of a small handful of terms including 'gay' as insult, indicates that a process of forgetting has taken place, and it cannot really be used as a defence for the current use of the term as insult.

It just means that it went over your head, like so many other jokes at your expense. Did you just understand all of that? Or should I bring it down to all monosyllabic words?

I DESPISE the use of the word "gay" as an insult, and have for quite a long time.

People should think about what they're doing. How would they like it if I (for instance) substituted "black" or "white" for "gay"? Would you like your skin color used as an insult? "Oh, that sucks, that's so WHITE."

the word gay as an insult...its almost funny.

The word is not such a bad word. It's people's interpretation of it that makes it bad.

Well, I don't use it as an insult and I never get offended, meaning I can't understand people who do. You can insult my mother and my sexuality as much as you want to without provoking any reaction. Some people just get offended over just about anything and well, too bad for them.

I will admit to seeing a girly looking men's shirt and saying, "That shirt is really gay." But I only say it in situations where it makes sense. I hate it when people use the word "gay" when it doesn't even make sense, like, "This book is so gay." The book is homosexual? That doesn't make sense. It doesn't bother me unless someone uses it in a situation that is completely ridiculous, using the word without really thinking about what it means.
