Three top movies is incredibly difficult!

I don't know about three, but some of my favourites are -

Monty Python's Life of Brian would have to be one (although I love all of Python, I think this one just beats the others to the best)
This is Spinal Tap
Fight Club
Shaun of the Dead (it's fairly recent but I'm sure it will become a cult classic)
Dogma (probably my favourite Kevin Smith movie, although all the others are great... having said that, I haven't seen Jersey Girl)
So I Married an Axe Murderer

Ok, I guess that turned out to be more 'films I like quite a lot', but it is difficult to pick favourites... most of the films people have mentioned here have been worth a place on people's top three or whatever (some I haven't seen).

1. Fight Club
2. Twelve Monkeys
3. Seven

It has just occured to me that Brad Pitt is in my three top films... and that David Fincher directed two...

Fight Club is just the definitive look at modern commercialised culture, and the disempowerment of the individual.

Twelve Monkeys is a tour-de-force by Bruce Willis, is deliciously twisted, and never truly resolves all of it's issues - leaving you thinking very seriously about concepts of sanity, reality and the ramifications of little things.

Seven is a study in the cult-of-personality that our cultures have, where a killer becomes a star.

So many films just below those three: Fifth Element, Natural Born Killers, both Kill Bill movies, Hero, The Others, Boondock Saints, etc.

Actually, I totally agree. The first one was good. But people that think its the best movie of all time and refuse to adknowledge that the sequels suck deserve a beat around the ears. :)

Channel Isles, those are them english isles near france yes? Nice to see English speaking people choosing a korean movie as their number one. You didn't see him in dub I hope? I hate dubbing, it ruins all the intentions of the director. I really love those epic asian stories, especially Crouching tiger, hidden dragon, I recently saw "Hero" in original language of course. It was fenomenal. My sister thought him to be boring, but damn, it very nice choreographed, almost theatre, but massive, massive. overwhealming or however you right it.

has anyone seen Akira? That was the most impressive anime I ever saw. I'm planning on seeing Ghost in the Shell too. One told me that an anime called Noire or Noir was really good too.

I also recently saw a not that "cultural shaping" movie called "underworld" or something. But I'm a sucker for a good vampire movie and actually he was very entertaining and better than most other vampire movies. But Anna rice and Bram stoker... best vampire movies, no doubt. Does anyone know some really good vampire movies I should see? No b-film, low budget. I really liked from Dusk till Dawn too. the first one of course.

the dark crystal
most convincing fantasy/alienness i'd yet seen at that time
still a great classic

barbarella
sciffy with sex as part of the natural environment
a winning combination on all counts

the origeonal 1954 release of fantasia
pretty centaurs, great music, hinted at the then far distant future of today's animantion diversity.

these are my three favorites of all time
of course then have been many other wonders
to numerous to mention since
yet each of these three were, to my mind, pioneering efforts each in their own laudable and excellent ways

among my favorites since then are monoke hime, kiki's delivery service, the star trek movies when paramont who owned the rights was refusing to put it back on the tube, the first three produced star wars movies, the list goes on, shrek, men in black (the first one, which is also the last time i was actualy at a movie house, can't afford them any more really), labrynth, shrek, willow, ghandi, (these last obviously not in order), fern gully, lilo and stitch, fellowship of the ring, (haven't seen the movie versions of book 2 and 3, read the trillogy and the hobbit for the first time back in the 60s when j.r.r. was still alive), (everything mentioned that's come out since mib I i've seen only on tape), ...

Brotherhold of the Wolf (Le Pacte des Loups)

Akira's all right. I much prefer Ghost in the Shell. "GITS2: Innocence" was very good (I got to see it in theaters), and Stand Alone Complex is by far my favorite series, probably with Evangelion: Neon Genesis in second. I hear that the second GITS series is even better, but I haven't gotten to see it yet.
