Does anyone else think this is odd...

When I first started middle school I noticed that there weren't ANY locks on the bathroom stalls, anywhere in the school. All that was on the door was part of the two-piece sliding locks (the part that would be screwed into the door), but not the actual lock that will keep people out. Everyone had to learn to keep one hand against the door, or to latch a foot under the door to keep other people from pulling it open, and even then you still almost get walked in on. I'm just wondering why they don't just get new locks, I really don't know what reason they could possibly have for not just getting new ones. It is just weird, I'm pretty sure every other middle school in town has locks on their bathroom doors.

my school doesn't have locks on the stalls either and I don't know why they don't get any. My school district just got a bunch of new lockers for the middle school (which they didn't need) and somehow they can't afford to properly maintain the bathrooms.

One time a girl in the sixth grade took an old lock (that didn't work) out of it's little slider holder thingy and used it to scratch a message into the side of the stall, but that lock didn't even count because it didn't work in the first place, so....I'm not really sure. Maybe they don't want suicidal kids to cut themselves with the locks, if they would even be sharp enough.

All school bathrooms deteriorate into shit in no time at all, so people give up.

It's cause our school systems are too cheap b/c they sending all the money to cushion the idiots on the Board of Ed (or at least at my school)

But at my school it is obvious that they used to have locks, they just took them all out for some reason. We had those locks where you just had to slide over a piece of metal into a hole, and all of the little pieces of metal that you slide over have been taken out. We have a LOT of bathrooms in our school and ALL the locks are gone. I don't think that that many could have just "broken".

Yep same here in Oregon. They pay all the administrators a 6 figure salary (where we have had a %600 increase of administrators here) and then cut the school days and teachers. If we could get rid of the leeches then we might have enough to take care of the education that the tax increases were suppose to be going to.

Well, thats why we learn to hold it I guess. So you don't use the bathroom once if you happen to be in the military! :D

Where I went to HS and JHS they didn't even have doors in the boys' room... the girls' room did, but no locks.

Suicidal Librarians should appreciate this: it's simply the police state at work. Kids "do not have the right" to privacy, even in the bathroom. They might smoke, or masturbate, or shoot up, or vote democrat or something.

*sigh* I can accept that answer, even if I think that it is ridiculous, it's none of their business what we do. Did they ever consider that we might want locks on the door so we could go to the bathroom without being walked in on? Since when is privacy something kids don't have the right to. *steams*

Or you could use the freshmen lockers.

Yes I do, since it's been years since I was in HS. But you think it's fine that a teenaged boy in our public schools can't take a shit with even so much as a door in some places? Sorry but once again I am astounded by the willingness of some people to put up with a total lack of freedom, particularly for someone other than themselves.

I'd think that someone would be walked in on, tell their parents, and their parents would sue for sexual harrassment... interesting.

And if some moron OD's on drugs in the bathrooms?

New invention you might have heard of: the foot. Quite handy for kicking in doors held by those shitty sliding bolt latches. Most human bodies come equipped with two these days.

Oh and keys, too. Capable of being carried by every member of the faculty and near-instantly opening every bathroom door in the building. Ask about them at a dealer near you.

And did you read my post? In n.c. they don't even bother WITH THE FUCKING DOORS!

Here's something shocking... my high school has locks in almost every stall, except for two; one in one of the girl's bathrooms upstairs and the other downstairs.... The bathrooms also had doors; double doors...

That is, to put it bluntly, bullcrap. Tell your parents. Get parents up to the school to demand the situation be rectified IMMEDIATELY. Trust me when I tell you that parents complaining will get results pronto. (I am willing to bet that no one's ever formally complained about this.)

Call the local newspaper and the local television station. They will find the money VERY FAST.

Why not? Our children do not have the right to go to the bathroom in privacy without some idiot or asshole walking in? Explain that please.

Kicking down the doors? Same thing as not having a lock. You have the right to a door, but not to a lock (bah, I need to look it up, but its the same reason why Admin's can break open lockers ect)

"Same thing as not having a lock"? Wrong. Totally wrong.

If a door has even a minimally effective lock, and is locked, it is impossible to open it without knowingly forcing the lock. If a door is unlocked, or has no locks, it can be opened casually, by accident or as a prank.

Adimins can open lockers, in at least some states. Good job coming up with that one. Lockers lock. Other kids cannot get into them without breaking the lock or the door. Admins can get in because they have the combination or the master key. So if a kid wants to kill himself and there are reports of drugs to overdose on in his locker, they can open it.

Thanks for proving my point. :)

My junior high went 3 years without doors on the stalls. They also had showers that nobody was allowed to use and lockers to small to place even a pair of shoes in.

Apparently, that may be a violation of building code regarding privacy in bathrooms.
