....Louis Armstrong was the first man on the moon? I know this is from the "Ali G Show" but I just had to ask. No flaming on this thread.

Aw man I thought this was about that jerk who wouldn't let him past and kept accusing him of faking the moon landing until eventually Buzz punched him ;(

I've have said "yes," if anyone was curious.

And I don't think he is that jealous, I seem to remember him saying something to that effect.

I know a man who knows the two men personally (It's Neil Armstrong, btw). And he says that Michael Collins is the one to be sorry for.

Colodia, have you answered my question for you on your matrix thread yet?

I'm always amazed when people like Ali G or Steven Colbert from the Daily Show manage to get people to take them seriously enough to answer questions. It's not quite as bad as the guys who go on Jerry Springer because their girlfriend wants them to and then are shocked! shocked! that their girlfriend turns out to be a guy named Bubba who did 3 to 6 for prostitution and selling meth, but it's getting there.

Buzz had a great quote that I don't remember exactly that went something like this, "I followed Neil down the ladder and onto the surface of the moon. The magnitude of the moment momentarily overwhelmed me. I am the first man to wet his pants on the moon."

:D Haven't heard that one before.

There was a sketch/film that I think was Kids in the Hall where it went through Neil Armstrong going through his normal day which is made so much more mundane by having been to the moon. "Paper or plastic?" (internal monologue) "MOON!!!!"

It made me laugh.

I wonder just how many people will miss the joke, and correct you by saying "No, it's Neil!" :p

Yep I've always felt sorry for Collins. He never got the chance to set foot. No-one remembers him. I think the best thing for Buzz was having his cool nick-name. It made him more memorable. Also Neil never giving interviews has probably helped.
Also probably doesn't help Collins having the same name of a famous (or infamous depending on your religion) Irishman. Really ensures no-one remembers him. Is he still alive?
I liked the Simpsons with Buzz: 'I was the second man on the Moon! You know - second! Comes right after first!', while looking sorta desperate.
BTW who do you know that knows Armstrong and Aldrin? Are they friends or merely aquaintances? (I'm talking about how Buzz and Neil see each other).

Oh, come on, how many other high ranking figures in the early 20th century Irish Republican movement even managed to get into orbit around Earth, never mind the moon?

Especially 47 years after his death!

I've heard that NASA originally objected to Aldrin's nickname. The conversation apparently went something like this:

NASA official: "What's this 'Buzz' nonsense? We can't have an astronaut called 'Buzz'. What's your real name, Aldrin?"
Aldrin: "Ivan, sir."
[pause]
NASA official: "OK, Buzz..."

Aldrin's given name was Edwin, which he had legally changed to Buzz in the 1980s. But the story could still be true -- just an example of Buzz outwitting petty officialdom. He obviously didn't want to go down in history as "Edwin".
