What attacks?

In response to blank's letter of Sept. 1, I wonder what attacks on Max Cleland and John McCain that Battles is referring to. President Bush made no personal attack on McCain and Saxby Chambliss only attacked Cleland's voting record in the Senate.

Battles made several vague references to the partisan press' attempts to discredit the Swifties and ostensibly their eroding credibility. I wonder what the fact that "two men appearing in the ad have stated that they were not present during the actions in which Kerry's medals were awarded" has to do with the veracity of statements on other matters, if they didn't claim to be a witness to the actions.

Likewise, Battles would have us believe that Dr. Louis Letson didn't treat Kerry's wound because he didn't sign the medical record. Letson never alleged he recorded the wound. He did say his corpsman, Jess Carreon made the entry.

As far as Thurlow's Bronze Star goes, it can best be explained by what John O'Neil said, "History will be kind to John Kerry because John Kerry wrote the history."

In other words, Thurlow didn't know he was in for the medal until he got out of the Navy. He didn't write up the action; Kerry did.

However, if Battles and the partisan press want to settle the dispute, they should request that Kerry sign the SF 180 to release all of his records.

First off, everyone who was there agrees that there was plenty of small arms and automatic weapons fire at the scene. The questions is whether there was ENEMY fire directed at the boats. More people say there wasn't than say that there was.

No enemy fire = no medals deserved

But Thurlow's military records, portions of which were released yesterday to The Washington Post under the Freedom of Information Act, contain several references to "enemy small arms and automatic weapons fire" directed at "all units" of the five-boat flotilla. Thurlow won his own Bronze Star that day, and the citation praises him for providing assistance to a damaged Swift boat "despite enemy bullets flying about him."

the people it happened to or the people who watched it happen?

how can these switftboat people be sure they are even remembering the right day?

how can the doctor be sure he is remembering treating kerry and not someone else? its not like he knew that kerry would be running for president 30+ years later. and its not like his name appears on kerrys records

How many of the SBVFLies, when they say they "served with" Kerry, actually served on his boat? Zero. How many were at that incident? Two. Was Kerry the only one that described his version of events? No. And in fact, prior to this election, many of the SBVFLies backed up his version.

Actually, as soon as I read the title and the poster's name, I knew that it did not apply to Chess and I agree on many things, one exception that stands out being a side-point debate which I cannot at this time recall when we first met, and I believe that was about atheism as a religion or something like that. I believe that the Swift Boat Veterans' claims have largely been disproven by now, so far as I've heard.

By the way -- was the repeated use of the "sniper" smiley in your post an attempt to make your argument sound more convincing? Didn't work.

I mean EVERYBODY, ranging from everybody who is still arguing about the Vietnam war to the media to the candidates themselves. Everybody is talking about something that happened in a war 35 years ago, and nobody is talking about the real issues. Nobody wants to talk about how Bush could have four more years of opportunity to put right-wing wackos on the Supreme Court who want to take away a woman's right to choose, who think it's cool for a state to give some poor slob life without parole for stealing video tapes from K-Mart, who support wholesale rape of the environment, and who generally want to set America back at least 100 years. Why doesn't Kerry hit Bush hard with that? He would get the votes of about 80 percent of all women and, in turn, the Presidency. But noooooo.....

I don't even CARE about the actual battle debate. To me it is meaningless. I DO like to believe that the gov does not give out erroneous bronze and silver stars (my grandfather, my namesake, has a silver star from WW1).

What does matter to me is 1. Kerry volounteered to serve. 2. He volounteered to go to nam, and 3. He volounteered for one of the most dangerous jobs in Vietnam. To me, this shows character and strength.

Bush hid, cheney definately hid, as did most of the current administration.

I choose strength of character. The man who has shown this in his past is NOT Bush.
