Anyone here been to the Yellowstone National Park?
It might be a nice place to visit but hides a secret.

Underneath it is a Supervolcano which blows up about 600,000 years.
The last it went off (about 640,000 years ago), it would have wiped out most the US population you transplanted the US state at that time.

Yes, the biggest threat to the US world superpower is not Islamic terrorism, China or a human threat. It is Mother Nature or a device of God depending how you perceive it.

From New Testament - Revelations

19:20 The beast was taken, and with him the false prophet who worked the signs in his sight, with which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. These two were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur.

20:8 and he will come out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to the war; the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.

20:9 They went up over the breadth of the earth, and surrounded the camp of the saints, and the beloved city. Fire came down out of heaven from God, and devoured them.

20:10 The devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet are also. They will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

Yep...I've heard of this before...it is an ancient volcano...it wiped out most dinosaur life in "North America" at one point (so I read).

And it won't just destroy America...the entire world will be swiftly kicked in the arse by it. Call it the great "reset" button...I'd say we are about due anyways.

This supervolcano surely is so long overdue that it has to explode right now, within the lifetime of each of us. We will not be able to protect ourselves from it before it blows up. Technology will not have the next 100-10.000 years to find means to make mankind immune to such threats. Surely it is an American privilege to be blown up by a supervolcano - if something has to threaten the US then it is of course something supermassive from nature itself which happened to blow up 600.000 years ago and just has to do it within the lifetime of the US empire (which is so insignificant and short in the geological timeframe, that it does not matter *at all*.)

Living in Orlando, FL, I can tell you that the hurricane media frenzy is just that. Sure we had a couple bad storms, but that is what they were, bad storms. For the most part the only effect it had on people here was a little inconvenience.

It seems to me like they are growing more frequent and stronger each year.

millions of people being evacuated: inaccurate or a little inconvenience?

I live in a city rebuilt after it was trashed by a hurricane/cyclone more powerful than Charley or Frances. It basically decided to go through the middle of the city!

Media frenzy....scare the hell out of people that this horrible storm is coming. Well, I can tell you from sitting up and drinking beer outside on my porch through most of this one and the last one, it was pretty week. Charlie at least had some strong winds, but they lasted all of a couple of hours. Maybe if you live on an island in the carribean it's a big deal, but on the main land, give me a break. More people die from stupidity during these things that from the storm, from stuff like running a generator inside their house.

That volcano has been extinct for years. If it were to blow up in my lifetime, then we have just suffered an attack from the Kilgrons.

Hey, hey! Lets not forget all the earthquakes on the west coast too.
Wooohooo! I can see it now, a massive earthquake wipes out the west coast, a masive hurricane wipes out the south east and those of use that finaly breath a bit of relif gets wiped by a super volcano.
Heh, and I thought that the north east coast didnt have any natural disasters to deal with. Now I feel better :)

Have to agree with ya there. We've been battered by more than our normal share of typhoons this year here in Japan (more than I can remember in 13+ years here - 3 in the last 3 weeks). And there are a handful of deaths each typhoon - usually from people doing stupid stuff. I think the three stupidist this season were the Naval SDF officer who decided to go windsurfing during one passing over Okinawa and the two guys killed while having a BBQ on a sea wall in Wakayama. WTF? Why would anyone have a BBQ on a sea wall during a typhoon? Darwin Award candidates.

extinct!? then what's with all the geothermal activity and earthquakes and such? the yellowstone caldera is actually a very active volcano. besides, what about the fact that it is currently bulging and the water temperatures in the rivers and the lake are rising? looks to me - and a bunch of geologists and national park scientists - that she's gonna blow sometime in the relatively near future.

Erupting and erupting as a Supervolcano are two different things. It has erupted plenty of times since it's last "big boom."

the volcano is not extinct
the geysers and hotsprings are all feuled by that volcano

but i dont think we need to start our "if the world in gonna end in the next 5 minutes will you F me?" plans just yet

"soon" in geologic time is more like 10,000 years.

ive been to many national parks and yellowstone is my least favorite
for one thing IT STINKS
those geysers smell of sulphur. YUCK

now that you arent allowed to cover yourself with honey to entice the bears, its not much worth going to

Yes. There's also a volcano somewhere in the Atlantic. If it erupts, most of it will collapse into the sea, and cause a massive tsunami that could cause a great, great deal of damage to the eastern seaboard.

There's asteroids that could wipe out the earth, nuclear holocaust, and garden-variety global warming. If you think about all the things that could wipe out the entire planet before we even go to bed today, it'll hurt your head.

I personally just try to forget it, and hope that if the world ends, I'll be one of the first people to die.

My daughter, her husband and his grandparents stayed home in Palm Beach County. They had a blackout, are missing some shingles but are none the less for the wear it caused.

Had it been a category 3 or better (as was thought for awhile) that would have been different. Because it reduced to about 90 to 110 MPH the surge and the winds were not as bad as they might have been. Florida has pretty stringent building codes. New construction can withstand a category 3 storm.

DO you really think the rest of the world will be fine?

The volcanic ash alone will screw up the global climate.

If the resulting shockwaves and tsunamis leave anything left.

The good news is: The sentient race of ants that follows us will find unopened packages of twinkies in arcaeological digs, and have tasty snacks. :D

I agree. It's not the dying that hurts. It all the lingering around and suffering horribly while waiting or wishing to die that is painful. Besides, it may not happen so why waste the neurons on it?
