Naw. Let the consumers decide. If they become unpopular enough they'll disappear from the market.
im from the south and we love big trucks. Big ol honkin gas guzzalin put 10 dollars in it everyday jacked up 4x4. I personally cant afford to drive one but id be pissed as hell if some1 tried to take them away! You ever tried mud hoggin in a hybrid piece of crap?

^ The wonders of Capitolism. If people dont like it...GASP! They dont buy it!
Anyway, alot of SUVs arent that bad, yes, Americans COULD all drive dinky litttle European imports, but we LIKE our huge-arse trucks and such. No self respecting American teenager would be caught dead in a Mini except as a joke.
Actually, my family owns an SUV, it gets about 30mpg, which isnt that bad. If you want to ban a car/truck type, ban Humvees, they get, what? 2mpg? Of course, if you can afford one, and its insurance, I guess you arent worried about gas mileage, eh?

They are polluting, gas guzzling monstrosities. For out of city etc. they're okay, but the fact is that most people just putter around the city in them, it's sad.

Not SUV's specifically, but there should be higher environmental and safety standards applied to the automobile market.

Banned? No. But there shouldn't be any tax breaks for owning them and they ought to be included in every automaker's fleet average for CAFE standards--and you're talking about someone whose last vehicle was a Jeep Cherokee 4X4.

I wouldnt exactly agree that they are monstrosities, and they dont really guzzle gas that much, but your other point is well taken. If you live in a place thats hard to get to, or have some sort of job that requires something that can go places a Ford Pinto cant get to, but dont want a Suburban or pickup, and SUV is a good choice.
But if your activities for the day can be summed up as:
Go to grocery store
Go to movie
Go home
You dont really need an SUV, unless you have said job/whatever.
Example, my parents work in Search and Rescue, and have a search dog. A car does not cut it when trying to drive up a steep slope in heavy rain with a dog. A pickup isnt any good either because its hard to get the dog in. An SUV however has space in the back where you can put the dog and good handling like a truck.
Anyway, its a nonissue since in a few years there wont be any gas to guzzle and we can all complain about how Hydrogen has gone up to .25 cents per cubic foot or something.

Despite my personal dislike for them, they should not be banned. They do the same thing as all cars do. pollute. just a little more than most. So using the logic for banning SUV's you would also have to ban cars. not happening! And think of all the jobs that would be lost if such a ban were to happen. Oh the hypocracy.

Second this. There are areas and situations where an SUV is a need and not a luxury, and banning them is just too much. But using a loophole ment to allow farmers to buy equipment so a dentist can drive to work in an H2 with a tax break, c'mon.
And if you all are going to insist on driving them on paved streets in your paved commute, they should at least live up to the standards of every other car. (this should include safety of the car you hit with those monstrosities.)

I disagree.
If you live out in the country, where you need to haul groceries, fence posts and whatnot, SUVs and trucks are fantastic.
In the city, they are a pain in the neck. When approaching an intersection, you cannot see whether or not there is approaching cross traffic over them.
Also, the bigger the SUV, the more aggressive, in my experience, the drivers tend to be.
They guzzle gas.
They are not safe. Four times, I have personally seen them roll because someone took a turn a little fast. One of those times, the vehicle rolled twice and landed on its roof, spinning in circles, right in front of my house. It was not moving that fast.

I would like to see them banned from public roads, if someone is going off road then fine but 90% of these stupid trucks have never been off road and are usually poorly parked and poorly designed

It's stupid to ban them. If some one wants to throw away money, please let them. Just give me a car so I get from A to B as cheap as possible.
I've always relied on the best form of transporatation known...Namely my two legs that look like the've been chisled out of stone. And yes, I never drove a vehical!

But slap a huge tax penalty on gas-guzzling cars like SUVs? Yes

Why not ban all cars? They create more problems than they solve.

On the other hand...I think they should Tax cars based on weigth..and volume...
Like they do in several Countries...

If automakers were required to include them in their calculations that they have to make for their fleets to meet mileage standards, that would be enough for me, not because it would wimpify (is that a word? :D) SUVs, but because it would put a greater emphasis on hybrid technology and high mileage cars in order to bring the average up.
I would like to see them banned from public roads, if someone is going off road then fine but 90% of these stupid trucks have never been off road and are usually poorly parked and poorly designed
well tell me this, unless you have a lot of land, how do you get the truck to where your going to take it off-road if you can't drive it. You pull it with a trailer right? How do you pull the trailer, oh yeah, a truck! I have never seen a crappy euro car pullin a full sized pickup. think about your answers before you post them buddy! And talk about design, i dont think half those little euro pieces look any better than a piece of crap, sure you get 200 mpg but what the hell can you use it for? you can haul anything, you don't have much space for people, you have no git-up, they get stuck on a wet gravel road, common! Also it sounds like you must drive a little dinky thing so parking shouldnt be a problem for you, you could park in the cracks in the asfault! One more thing, here, you rarely see a truck that hasn't been through some mud!

Don't ban them. It isn't necessary. If gas prices continue their rise from 2000, then consumers won't buy them, but rather ditch them. With the gas prices at current levels, it's beginning with the rise of hybrids. I personally feel that a better solution would be to get people to use one car per family. There's currently one car for every man, woman, and child in the US. But I know this is impractical, and quite frankly, immoral to force people on economic decisions.

what is this obsession with banning SUV's? they do the same thing all other cars do. Just a little more. They pollute a little more. they use a little more gas. Why are you drawing the line at SUV's? It is silly to ban one product when there are other products just like it. Thats like banning certain cigarette brands because they are "worse" than others for your health. When the government gets into banning selective products you are moving away from a free market society into a socialist authoritarian one. I really wish to avoid that. That is why I oppose the banning of SUV's.
