Best beer in the world?
In our beautiful Belgium discussions about wich is good beer and wich isn't regularly come up (usually when drinking :p ... make that almost exclusively when drinking, beer that is). So all you different nationalities, start bragging about how you know or have the best beer.
Another thing you must consider. Have you ever tasted real Belgian beer (thats important, because unless you have, you haven't really tasted good beer :D) Stella Export doesn't count as real Belgian beer, that is a bit watered down, to better suit the foreign taste.

But I prefer English Bitter.

I hate a lot of pilsners and for some reason, I find Danish beers as well as that watery-foamy American "beer" to be digusting. I personally find that while a few Canadian beers are disgusting, Rikards isn't bad, pretty good; honey brown is a little weird, but pale and red are good; Molsons Canadian isn't bad, but I no longer drink on principle. Outside of that, I like Guiness, Kilkenny and Lowenbrau.
best beers for me are Lübzer, Becks and Freiberger

Not all American beer is that bad, just most of the stuff from the "major" producers. Ever heard of Leinenkugel's? They make a couple good ones, notably Creamy Dark and Big Butt (dopplebock).

I don't know about Wisconsin, but Atlanta's own Dogwood Stout is incredible, and the Sweetwater 420 pale ale is good. As for foreign beers, I'm big into Hoegaarden and Ayinger Ur-Weisse. I've heard that Westvleteren makes some incredible beers, but at $12 for a 12 oz bottle in a shop 500 miles away, I haven't had a chance to try it yet.

You're Belgian too, must be! And I totally agree. Mee duvel kunt ge nie verkeerd gaan :d of juist wel... Primus isn't that good. I like Maes, Stella (no export) and Jupiler. Duvel is good for a night out, when just talking. We're throwing a Duvel party this November. Deadly parties our Duvel parties.
Btw I'm very proud to say I never drank Heineken, and I hopefully never will. ;) AND Budweiser is probably the worst pilsener I've ever drank. Tastes like very watered down wodka.
Anyhow, I've once heard the most famous beer taster in the world, Michael Jackson, a.k.a. the beerhunter (not the pedopheliac musician) say that Belgium is the true beer country.
Find out more about belgian beer: http://www.beerhunter.com/documents/19133-000213.html
"No other country (even those with far more breweries) has among its native styles of beer such diversity, individuality, idiosyncrasy and colour. Nor does any other country present beers so beautifully. "
Thank you mister Jackson!

I've tried the usual Belgium beers - v.good, but then I highly recommend the Bath Ales and a few of the locally brewed ales in Bristol (UK) from the micro brewery's that are starting to pop up. I've been informed from friends that in the US micro brewery's are actually make a pretty decent beer thats a lot better than the weak watery beers like budweiser etc.

Well I'm quite partial to a nice Newky Brown (that's Newcastle Brown to those not in the UK).
Also quite partial to Guinness, Murphys, Tetleys, Old Speckled Hen, Bombadier, Spitfire, and John Smiths at a push.
rickard's red. keith's. moosehead. canadian.
if a bar serves at least one of those i'm a happy camper who doesn't have to pay extra for mixed drinks.
I never really got used to English ales. They fill the glass to the top and there is harldy any carbondioxide in it. Makes it taste like water... but I've drank far worse than English ales so it isn't that bad.

My favourite Belgian ales and beers:
I don't really have a favourite pilsner. As long as it isn't Romy, Bavik or Cristal Alken (oh god Cristal Alken).
strong blond ales:
- Duvel!!!
- Sloeber
- Judas
- Hapkin
trappists and abbey beers:
Almost all of them, the blond and doubles, I don't like triple, it sticks to your ribs.
- Ename blond and dubbel
- Trappist West-Malle blond and dubbel
and further: La Chouffe, Zulte, almost every geuze, and a lot more...
I once drank Verboden Vrucht, but I can't quite remember how it tasted...I can't really remember when, where and how much either.
Foreign beer: Carlsberg (strange beer, you don't get any hangovers, I wonder how they pull that off), and some spanish beer with lemon in it, forgot how its called, San something something, I think.
Beers I don't like:
Budweiser (because it just isn't beer, its an insult)
Guiness, Hoegaarden, Triples, Leffe, English ales and a lot more (mostly because it isn't my cup of "beer", not because they aren't good beers.
oh...and Heineken (never drank it, never will), its a Belgium/Netherlands thing.
An example of our deeply rooted beerculture.
This is a statement of the Abbot of the Trappist order of West-Vleteren. It explains why their production is limited.
As every man we must be able to live. So we have to try to earn our living and let others share in what we have to abstain from. Indeed, we have to live 'from' and 'with' our brewery. But we do not live 'for' our brewery. This must be strange for business people and difficult to understand that we do not exploit our commercial assets as much as we can. We are no brewers. We are monks. We brew beer to be able to afford being monks."
Father abbot
And yet they make some of the best beers a man could ever drink. You're not just drinking beer, you're drinking divinity, culture and history.

This is what I like, some one who says I don't like X but that isn't to say it is bad.
For me a cold bottle of Dog or a not so cold bottle of Old Peculiar (spelling?) or any Porter (strong sweet dark beer for those who don't know).
Then anything with a bit of flavour, so Bud and all it's too cold flovourless ilk are out as is much of the Canadian beers, not because the canadian beers aren't any good but when I was over there I nearly got hyporthermia drinking a jug.
Also I like to be served in Pints! Sorry just my thing.

Wellington County Dark Ale, a microbrewery delight. John Smith Nut Brown Ale as well. I agree Belgian beers are tops. I've never tasted a bad one. Every beer brewed by major American and Canadian breweries are pure crap. Watered down for mass consumption with nothing to distinguish one from another. I'm off to England next month on vacation and plan to sample as many differents beers as possible. Any suggestions for a guy who loves dark ales?

From the supermarkets you can pick up loads of bottles, porters are dark and sweet and tend to be strongish. Someone put a link above to the CAMRA web site, that is worth a look. Youngers No.3 if you can find it is great, and as I've said Old Peculiar. Waggle dance is ok (brewed with honey) but it's gone down hill since it rose in popularity and the volume of sales increased.

I take great offence from having our Danish beer compared to the American yellow water, which they sell as beer over there. Danish beer is NOTHING like that! Shame on you for mentioning those two in the same sentence!
I will admit, however, that Danish beer probably falls in the mediocre category. If by Danish beer you mean your regular Carlsberg or Tuborg Pilsner. It's beer's version of pop: Pretty mainstream and easy to guzzle. Carlsberg have actually begun producing some nice beers, like porter and stout. Dark, bitter beers - more suited to my personal preference.
I am with you all the way on Guinness and Kilkenny, by the way §:-)
