Fanfiction...ick. Some people who write fanfics have no talent, and some have quite a bit of talent; I don't think it gives the author of books bad names though...or ruins anything significant.
However, those who do write well ought to be writing their own stories...instead of leeching off the fame of someone else. I mean, they can't even get a copyright on their fanfiction!
Hey, how 'bout those Huskers? ;)
Mind you, fan-fiction isn't really my thing; but I don't really see any harm. I see it the same as people who make art or sculptures of characters from games/movies they like, or who create fan sites about [insert something here]. If anything I would imagine the creators would be happy someone liked their product enough to do so. But I'm weird. ^_^;

Some fan fic makes for good reading. And it's not ruining anything.
However, those who do write well ought to be writing their own stories...instead of leeching off the fame of someone else. I mean, they can't even get a copyright on their fanfiction!
They aren't leeching of someone elses succes. Since they don't make any money of it. They simply enjoy writing about their fictional heroes. Thats why it is called fan fic.

The Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings fanfiction is some of the worst, I've read a few of those stories. You are right, the people who have talent should be writing their own stories. Crazy fans also made THIS (http://www.bagginses.com) website, which is actually mildly funny.
And the Huskers actually won their first game, yay!
It would be complementary to the people to whom it was dedicated. Why should people not share their feelings about these particular people or things? It doesnt matter if theyre good or not it is just about whether they care. Its ok if theyre not forcing it on you. I do agree about he LOTR things though it makes me want to cry

Leeching is a bad term. Sorry. I meant, they shouldn't be wasting their creative talent by using someone else's characters and worlds to write a story, they should be writing their own.
True, we won, but the lack of the Holy Option was disturbing. Callahan may have done a good job, but he shall repent for his destruction of the most cherished and unique tradition alive! The option shall be AVENGED!!!

Fan fiction is fine and a good way to explore plot twists and holes that aren't part of a given cannon. No harm in it.

Ugh . . . I was browsing through the anime category for a sec and came across Gundam SEED - some of the fanfiction I saw (one of em made Lt. Mu LaFlaga a prince) would totally ruin a great series like that

I think that worse that fan fic, which I don't have to read, is people posting "42" in forums which I do read. No, it isn't funny. No, it isn't clever. Yes, it is totally predictable.

true that, if you look on file share networks you can find fake books of harry potter, one i had found was hundreds of pages long i believe, completely fake book pretending to be one of the harry potter books, its like jesus, if you are going to make up and write a fake for a real book thats a hundred pages long, just write your own damn book

I don't know how fan fiction ruins anything, nor do I believe that the people who get joy out of it should 'do their own thing' if that's what they dig. They might be really good at something else that they are perfectly happy doing for cash and get kicks out of expanding on someone elses characters. Mind you, you have to search this crap out on your own. For and by, no harm no foul.
Though I was shaken by 37, that's THIRTY SEVEN, pieces of fan fiction from the film Bring it On.........37............wow........

I spent the entire summer before last completely addicted to that site. I read a LOT of good stories and ignored the ones that weren't so good. I also wrote a lot (but no way I'm linking my profile for you). If you don't like it, don't go there.

15 posts and no mention of 'slash' fiction yet? How disappointing.

I used to really like fanfiction, and read it all the time (never bothered writing any), and then one day, I just thought, all of this fanfiction just ruined books and movies for me and I quit reading it. But "slash" is the worst kind of fanfiction, I read into a slash piece one time, not knowing what it was, and about halfway I just said, "Oh, my god" and got the heck out of that site.

After seeing your first Slashfic, you'll never want to watch an episode of Star Trek:TOS, again.

Then I guess you've been living under a rock for the last couple of years, since there is also this site: Fanfiction Sanctuary (http://fiction.seiryuuheaven.net). Look under writers such as Chikita, suboshiamiboshi, deathangelgw etc...
Yes, I'm one of the admins at this site (Chikita), but, we only allow decent fanfiction here. So, before you decide to hate fanfiction and declare that fans ruin books and movies, perhaps you should look at a site other than the evil that is ff.net!

After I stumbled across stuff like slash, that was pretty much the end of fanfiction for me. Slash does give the author/director/whatever a bad name. I'm pretty sure that J.R.R. Tolkien would be horrified if he read a LotR slash piece. I've decided that regular fanfiction is okay, I change the storylines of books and movies all the time in my head and just don't write it down like some people. But slash is just a disgrace to any decent book or movie.

I think most of you are forgetting that "fan fiction" (and I use the term loosely) is a major component of universal literature.
For example, Disney's The Lion King could be considered fan fiction for Shakespeare's Hamlet. Shakespeare's own Othello could be considered fan fiction for Italian stories about a moorish general. Dante's Divine Comedy could be considered fan fiction of the Bible. Heck, the Bible is practically fan fiction of itself! It has lots of authors, and newer authors recycled plots and characters from older authors. The writings of St. Augustine, the basis for practically all modern Christianity, could be considered "fan fiction" of the Bible and Plato.
Sure, most fan fiction is utter crap. Then again, so is most fiction.

There was hella much homo-erotic subtext in the lord of the rings. A lot of people theorize that J.R.R. Tolkien was gay. Why is slash so bad? :(

Which was itself based on a play by Thomas Kyd, which was itself based on a translation of Norse legends...
