The Peasant
A Peasant was in the woods chopping wood, when another peasant come upon him and asked him who he was. The first Peasant told him his name, and then proceeded to tell about his family. "I am a woodchopper. I do not make much money, but the money I do make, I spend in 3 ways. 1/3rd of my money I repay a debt with. Another 3rd I invest for the future. The last 3rd I throw away." When the second peasant asked the first to explain exactly how he spent this money, the first peasant explained such: "I repay a debt to my parents by feeding and housing them. I invest in the future by bringing up my 2 sons. I throw away by raising daughters."

The basic thing is, supporting parents repays them for raising you, sons will do that for you when you're old, your daughters will be married off to some bloke who most likely couldn't care less for you. Remember, it is 19th century Russia Tolstoy lived in.
