Ah, other Skynyrd fans. Skynyrd is my single favorite band in history.
But I'm the biggest fan here. If you haven't heard Four Walls of Raiford, then you're missing out. It's one of their best song, though unfortunately little-known.

Definitely good musicians, although "Sweet Home Alabama" is a racist song, if you listen to the lyrics anyway.

I'm surprised that so many people haven't heard of Lynyrd Skynyrd.

But I'm going to have to disagreee with "best band ever". Best American band ever. But Led Zeppelin is the best band ever.

Lynyrd Skynyrd is named after there High school Gym Teacher, Leonard Skinner. They put the "y"s in there to honor the Byrds.

Aw, its not racist!

Big wheels keep on turning
Carry me home to see my kin
Singing songs about the southland
I miss alabamy once again
And I think it’s a sin, yes

Well I heard mister young sing about her
Well, I heard ole neil put her down
Well, I hope neil young will remember
A southern man don’t need him around anyhow

Sweet home alabama
Where the skies are so blue
Sweet home alabama
Lord, I’m coming home to you

In birmingham they love the governor (boo, boo, boo)
Now we all did what we could do
Now watergate does not bother me
Does your conscience bother you?
Tell the truth

Sweet home alabama
Where the skies are so blue
Sweet home alabama
Lord, I’m coming home to you
Here I come alabama

Now muscle shoals has got the swampers
And they’ve been known to pick a song or two
Lord they get me off so much
They pick me up when I’m feeling blue
Now how about you?

Sweet home alabama
Where the skies are so blue
Sweet home alabama
Lord, I’m coming home to you

Sweet home alabama
Oh sweet home baby
Where the skies are so blue
And the governor’s true
Sweet home alabama
Lordy
Lord, I’m coming home to you
Yea, yea montgomery’s got the answer

I respectfully disagree. And this is why. When they say "In Birmingham they love the guv'nuh", they immediately say "boo, boo, boo". The governor of Alabama at that time was a segregationist, and they were booing him. Skynyrd was in no way racist.

Yea, but 38 special kindof went away from Southern Rock when they got most famous, and moved into pop rock. I resent that to this day, that Hold on Loosely and some of there other hits were not true Southern Rock.

Ah, other Skynyrd fans. Skynyrd is my single favorite band in history.

cleary you are mistaken. i am the biggest fan alive. i was born and conceived to skynyrd, i am young, but i grew up listening to them and zeppelin. and frankly, there is no comparison betwixt the two. they are two different kinds of music. its like comparing metallica to pantera. two great bands. but two different sounds.

p.s. the only reason i spelled my name wrong was bc skynyrd was taken.

In all reality, Sweet Home Alabama was written as a joke. Skynyrd was actually big fans of Neil Young, but Young's songs like Southern Man and Alabama compelled Skynyrd to write a reply. They did in marvelous fashion. Ronnie VanZant, Skynyrds first lead singer and principle song writer, never really liked expressing political views in his music. Even though they sang "Saturday Night Special", an anti-firearm song, Ronnie owned many guns and loved to hunt. The only serious part of Sweet Home Alabama was the thrid stanza, in which Skynyrd expressed their gratitude for the "Swampers" of Muscle Shoals, Alabama. The Swampers helped Skynyrd tremendously in their early days with getting off the bottom and going somewhere with their music.
If you think that Skynyrd is a [racist group, take a listen to "The Ballad of Curtis Loew". That should dispel all doubts, unless you're one of those Yankee morons who wants to feel some kind of superiority over Southerners and so ridicule everything that comes from the South [racist.

Not a big LS fan, myself. A couple of songs are ok by me, but I'm not real big on Southern Rock.

I'm not Southern, but I am Texan. Yes, I know, some of y'all are saying "But Texas *is* in the south!" No self-respecting Texan would ever call themselves "Southern". We're Texan.

I'm into more pure blues like Buddy Guy and Bo Diddly. If you want the greatest example of Texas rock/blues, listen to Janis Joplin. Stevie Ray Vaughn is another great Texas blues man.

A - GD effin - men! :D

Southern, Cajun, German, Czech, Mexican, African, and a whole lot more - that makes Texas! (Born and bred)

I like a lot of southern rock, outlaw country, and crossover, but give me real kick ass Texas music for sure - Gatemouth, T-Bone, Albert Collins, etc. (Can anyone guess where exactly in Texas I'm from? It sure ain't Austin... ;))

Oh, and if you ever want to pick a fight with a man from Mississippi, tell him that the Blues got started in Texas. That's a huge debate among ethnomusicologists. :D (And beat down any one who ever tries to tell you that Chicago is the home of the Blues. )
