“ownership society.”

I have read that an ownership society is going to be one of the shrubs themes.

It sounds great but it does have problems.

Most people already have that ideal. Why else do we speak of the American Dream. Why do we strive for a college education, a good job, and home ownership.

It is easy to wail that people have to take ownership for their actions but we do need a reality check.

Investment: Why do we employ brokers? Most people don't have the time to monitor the markets, study forcasts, or even have the wher withall to "properly" invest. That is why you hire an expert. People understand he is not going to make you filthy rich but he is supposed guide you so you don't invest in fly by night schemes.

Bankers: Why do you put your money in a bank? You are hiring their expertise to watch your money.

Doctors: Self explanetory

Corproate executives and corporate board members: Again their expertise on growing a compay.

We can talk about an ownership society and yet that seems to stop in Republican views of a capitolistic society.

With all the corprate fraud, how many execs are going to do hard time in prision?

Doctors routinely prescribe by the incentives they get from pharmisuiticals. There is an effort to get pharmacologists to teach doctors how to prescribe and yet it is getting fought by the pharmies.

Bankers! Rember the savings and loans? Charles Ketting ripped off untold wealth. The scandal wiped out the life savings of many elderly and yet people like Ketting got a year in Prison.

Brokers: Junk bonds! What was Millkin punished? Yet I hear he teaches a buiness ethics class at Harvard.

An ownership society sounds great but there has to be punishment for people when they don't take ownership for their actions. People have to be properly punished. How is it that putting thousands on goverment assistence by defrauding them a lessor crime then using a weapon in a holdup?

The view of an ownership society is messed up when such crimes happen and yet people sit back an say "They didn't obviously expect everybody to take care of them!"

An ownership society needs oversight to take care of those that abuse trust and defraud people.

When we can see the Ken Lays, the Millikans, the Kettings doing hard time in prision; I think you will see people lean more towards I want to take care of my own future(ie social security).

But I doubt we will ever see such instances because we as a society admire wealth.

How can we talk about family values when we do that?

How can we teach family values when a child sees his old man tossed out of his job because his loyalty, his dedication, his hard work means nothing; when some third world country pays nothing for hte same job.

How can you teach family values to a child when they hear their grandma lost 1/2 of her retirment due to corprate fraud and will have to work to manidtory retirement?

Hard work and dedication is a constant lament I hear from Republicans and Libertarians. People expect everybody else to take care of them. People don't take ownership for their actions.

Why should they?

They have seen what happened to their parents and grand parents.

Loyalty and dedication means nothing to a job. Wealth is more important.

You can't worship money and have family values.
