Meh...It wouldn't be anything public schooling isn't trying to do.
And it's not brainwashing, it's teaching, enlightening.

train a kid to think for themselves and give them options (but tell them that you are not omnipotent and that they are capable of deciding things for themselves) and explain outcomes of actions and they will live their life how they see fit.

I hear that this technique is used quite well .... by extremists of ALL flavours.

Instead, I will teach my children about compassion, honesty, open-mindedness, fairness, work ethic, and the joy of learning, and let them choose their own way though the world - with all of the support that I can give them to help them along the way.

give a small child a fish, he will be happy for 5 minutes
teach a child to catch a fish, he or she may grow up with a fascination of killing animals, leading to alienation, and eventually social exclusion, which can lead to him/her going postal in later life....

that's what the verse is saying. you teach them that sin has consequences, and then they won't sin later.

Not force them to be Christians with whips and chains.

In a broad sense, isn't that training your children in the way they should go? You're teaching them that compassion is better than selfishness, honesty is better than dishonesty, open-mindedness is better than prejudice, etc. Don't you do this in the hope that they'll continue to live, compassionated, honest, open-minded lives? That's really all the verse is saying.

See, thats the problem. One person's teaching is another persons brainwashing.

I am not trying to paraphrase that verse which I completely disagree with, which is why I said something opposite of what that verse is saying.

Don't tell kids what to think. Give them options on how to live their lives. Be what you think would be a good example and explain to them why you think your example of how to live life is a good one. Don't tell them fairy tales about Satan and how he tortures as if they are absolutly true, trying to scare them into following a certain way of life. Thats just about as bad as whips and chains.

Tell kids that they have every right to think and beleive what they wish. Tell them that they will learn form their mistakes and it helps them grow as a person. Give them your opinions and tell them that that is your personal opinion and not written in stone for all to follow.

I completely agree. Really, you're preaching to the chior here...my dad's a preacher, so I know how bad it can be when they try to brainwash you.
