Living or dead?

Not many american actors are good these days. Well the young ones that is....

Morgan Freeman and Dustin Hoffman should definitely be on the list.

Judging all young American actors by one of the worst ones out there isn't really fair. Peter Saarsgard would be a better example of a young American star.

Yep, there are plenty that should have been - but there's only 10 slots. I saved one for "other". Depending how many responses there are, I might do another poll in a few days updated with the most popular "other" choices.

With only 10 slots, you can never please everyone :(

David Boreronous (spelled wrong) star of Angel. Stupid guys cut show early...

He has showed a mythra/plethra of emotions, played good and evil, hero and villian, and did great humor sometimes.

Why wasn't he in the poll?

Robert De Niro. I liked him in Taxi Driver.

Jim Carry is a great Comedian, but not a great actor.
On that list, Johnny Depp is the most talented actor.
But he seems to have the same type of role in every movie he's in -
A strange but whitty man, whose a little crazy or obsessed with something that isn't that important.

Carrey's not taken seriously as much as he should be because he has a reputation as a slapstick comedy actor. Of course, I don't really think that's fair to him. Movies like The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind show that he's a superb dramatic actor. I'd definitely rank him above Ian McKellen.
Comandante

The best actor is the one who can become his role the best. In that sense, the best actor is Gary Oldman. Did you ever see him in Sid and Nancy? He literally became Sid Vicious, which would have been insanely hard to play in the first place. It seemed like he wasn't even an actor. It was like Sid Vicious was literally playing himself.

I like Samuel L Jackson, mainly because he can act, and the fact he gets all the cool parts

brando - the godfather, apocolypse now, say no more.

Gary Oldman is quite possibly the most versatile actor today -which, for all intents and purposes, is the same thing as "best" actor, as Comandante said. Judging an actor based on how appealing or cool his roles are is a fallacy, because you're not judging the actor's ability, you're judging his personality. In this aspect, Tom Hanks ranks among the worst actors of all time. I like him in the roles he's taken, he's just not all that talented as an ACTOR. Oldman is incredible: his entire personality changes from Hannibal, to Fifth Element, to Leon.

Two other actors I would have voted for, had they been on the list, are Kevin Spacey and Anthony Hopkins.

A lot of good suggestions there, I'm going to edit my first post to include all the "other" nominations. :)

Living - I would probably go for Geoffrey Rush.

If you include the deceased - where do I start? Humphrey Bogart, probably.

No Jack Nicholson? Has he ever been in a bad film?

Plenty. He used to play in nothing but the worst B movies before he broke through with EasyRider.

Johnny Depp has a gift for just falling completely into a role. You see him up there, you don't think "wow, Johnny Depp is doing a great job with this role." You think, "wow, Uncle Duke really was a cool freak, wasn't he?" Or, "OMG I so wanna be Jack Sparrow when I grow up!" He chooses his roles carefully, granted, but he disappears into them.

One "other" I'm surprised no one mentioned yet is Denzel Washington. That man has talent, and incredible range.

brando - the godfather, apocolypse now, say no more.

I second that!!

But..!! Far better than the Godfather and Apolcalypse Now are his performances in On The Waterfront and A Streetcar Named Desire. The later two really show how good Marlon was, and explain why actors like De Niro, Al Pacino and Jack Nicholson tried to imitate his acting style, hoping to get the same results.

Damn! I can' t believe I forgot him myself! And I agree, that man has some serious talent going for him. Just think of what he put down in Training Day.

William H. Macy is a great actor, as are Billy Bob Thornton, Kevin Spacey, Johnny Depp and Steve McQueen. Gary Oldman and Ray Winstone are in the top ranks too.

How come no one's mentioned Morgan Freeman? He's been doing mostly "other" stuff lately, and by "other" I mean stuff that by it's nature wouldn't get him a shot at the Academy's, but the list he has already is as good if not better than many of the actors mentioned:

Driving Miss Daisy
Glory
The Shawshank Redemption
Unforgiven
Se7en

I don't know why everybody keeps mentioning Denzel Washington. He's strong, but he's not varied at all. Acting is about behaving like somebody else.
