Ooh, engineering. Fun stuff :P I'm planning on becoming an engineering major as well, although I'm leaving my options open in case that job market crashes by 2006.
@Suicidal Librarians:
My school day runs from 7:15 to 2:05, and it's 'block scheduling' - four blocks every day, with two semesters (where all classes are changed, except for a few such as band/chorus/yearbook), with every class being 90 minutes long.

So are ours. We get out on the 8th or 9th of July, and we run from 7:45-2:30/45, with a few 90 minute classes. Second period is hell (chemistry, oddly).

I don't know what it is about science that makes it so dull. Everytime the teacher begins reading out of the textbook my eyes just start to droop, and there are flashing lights all over the page. We only have 90 minute "core" classes (language arts, science, social studies, and algebra/math).

I have the "block" schedule, too. The 90 minute classes thing. Personally, I like it better, cause the day would seem so long if I start it knowing I had 9 classes to go to...and they're all so short! I think you tried to quote mine :P
I like the system better, however, I like my old high school better. Block scheduling has its positives and negatives, although generally I think there's more positives than negatives. My old school just had a much more diverse course, courtesy of being a 60,000 pop city with a 1500-student high school. My new school is in a small town, kind of dumpy, with all sorts of budget problems and a tiny course selection in comparison. I like it, though, although I do miss all the science courses my old high school offered (Bio I, II, AP, Chem I, II, AP, Physics I, AP, and Fundamental Science; the new school only has fundamental science, bio, chem, and physics)
You get more done quicker in block scheduling. I'm in marching band, although I'm not too happy about it. Marching band and concert band used to be separate (at my old school :P) and for a very good reason. But we're a small school now and don't have enough people to constitute separate bands. Take our sports teams - one town nearby, very fine school system (and large, too) has an incredible talent pool to choose from for say, basketball. Our school has to BEG players to join the team.
Downside is every course is every day. Used to be there was one day where we didn't have a course. Putting up with some courses for 90 minutes is trying as well, but the homework load makes up for it. Leaves time free to do other extracurriculars.
Where do you live btw?

Don't do the assignments, open and close your mouth profusely without uttering a single syllable (one of my school's math teachers teaches the Quadratic Formula song. To this day I'm thankful that I memorized it the conventional way long before, and that I was never in her class). Look up some sites that offer contradictory views to the standard alarmist neo-environmentalist belief that 'omfgz we're all gonna die!!! evil humans!!!'. Heh. Sounds bad though, feel sorry for you. There's one of those every year though.

East Coast Federation: Sweet! I'm joining ROTC! :j/k:
Suicidal Librarians: Huskers rule!! I'm disappointed in the West Coast coming to Nebraska, though. Option was the heart and soul of Husker football. True, we weren't getting good recruits, but Solich deserved one more year (at least) to prove himself, and firing Bo Pelini was ... like, a cardinal crime. Burning down the sanctified and holy tradition of option is tearing down the slogan 'There's no place like Nebraska.' That athletic director...shameless.

Yup...I just copied and pasted, but changes like two word's so I could call it my own...that's how I ace English!!!! :P
Anyway, back to the topic at hand, the I understand that whole small town thing...sort of. I live in Wisconsin, in a city about of about 12,500, with 1000 students at our High School. The block schedule does afford a lot more time afterschool, which I like. I actually had two homework intensive classes one quarter, but never had to take any work home!!! It was nice!
The Quadratic Formula song? You don't know Chula, do you (Mrs. Peterson?) I had a teacher who sang a Q. Formula song too...although, she was tone deaf, and it was mostly for the benefit of entertaining the class!
And true, how can you hate school? It's intentions are good...Although I can understand hating individual classes...I had one called Wisconsin Studies. You know all the stereotypes (Cheeseheads, cows, farming, hicks, and whatnot?) It's all true. Imagine 90 minutes a day of that!!!

Eh...it still doesn't make any sense...especially since he quoted me to say that.
The ROTC program does not belong to me, nor does it belong to my college. It belongs to the United States military and is the same nationwide. My college has an Air Force and Army ROTC. You can take the classes without committing to the military, however, you cannot get any scholarship at all if you do this. If you commit to the military, the military will pay for all of your education, including stipends for food and books and such. Additionally, if you do Air Force ROTC, upon graduation, you become a 2nd Lt in the United States Air Force. I was suggesting that anyone considering doing the ROTC do it AFTER they get their bachelors, while they work on their master's degree. (Graduate school is much more expensive, etcetera).

Hi...
First off all I think you guys should stop bitching about spelling mistakes and stuff... That´s not what this thread is about!
Second: I started school the 2. of August, and i won´t be leaving until somewhere in the middle of june! And I have 90 minute blocks as well. And if any of you think it´s difficult having a brazillian teacher, you should try having an old danish teacher who hasn´t spoken english for 35 years. That´s fun! If you should wonder why I have a danish teacher, it is actually because I attend school in Denmark - That is the IB-Diploma Programme.
And as a final note I would like to say, that since I am a dane - and therefore not a native english speaker, I will not have any stupid comments on my spelling or my grammar, tough I am open for constructive criticism.
By the way: My majors are (if you could call them that) math, bio, chem and philosophy. :D

The reason I bitch about native English people's grammar mistakes is because people like you (who don't speak English natively) come here and make a post like that, and the only error I see right off without looking to closely is an "h" that you typoed out on the word "though" (looks like "tough") so I congratulate you. However, to be a native English speaker and spell the word "tomorrow" improperly (the same way each time) three times is no typo and I get the impression that Kahta is a native English speaker (he hasn't said he isn't).

Oh.. So you are having you own raid against bad english??? Funny, I don´t see people welcoming your thoughts on their spellings and grammar. You are really geting on my nerves. In my opinion, you need a life and need to stop pointing out everything that someone between 4 to 8 years younger does wrong. I am borderline dyslexic with "a" and "o".
When you point out my mistakes, its like me pointing out the spelling errors of an 8-12 year old. In my opinion you must have very low self esteem and have to point out others mistakes on an online game forum to give yourself a feeling of self gratification.

Kahta: Get over it and just ignore Opal Isle's posts, it is the only thing that makes him stop correcting you.
Opal Isle: Don't be so tough on people. Kahta misspelled a few words, so what?
Eh, I don't think "so what?" is the right attitude. Maybe I should have corrected him in a nicer way, but what is wrong with educating people? Do you start bitching at your English teacher when you get your essay handed back to you with red marks on it? I don't think so.
I won't take side just to let you know. But I think it's his right to kick you out, doesn't it say so in the rules? Or maybe I'm wrong... we need a mod ruling.
Writing like this is actually taking sides... Just a thought

You're 10? Dude, I'm not trying to make you feel bad; I'm trying to help you out. When my English teachers gave me papers back with red marks, I thanked them for helping me improve my knowledge of the English language.

People get annoyed when you correct them because you are so openly smug and sarcastic. Maybe you could have said it in a nicer way, but many people would still be annoyed because they think of your corrections as a minor hijack because so many people respond to them.

I'd like to talk about politics or the topic of this thread, but you keep griping about my posts and distracting the entire thread from the topic.

Unlike some people, I dont have the time to type everything in MS Word and then copy it into the reply of a post. Now leave.

Not on this thread...the subject of the thread is education. I don't see how discussing grammar is a hijack when we're in a thread about education.

Quite a difference between an english teacher and some random guy on the internet... And I think it´s not what you do, but the way you do it!

I don't have that kind of time either. That's part of the reason I learned the English language. (Eh...people wrote well before MS Word, so it would follow that people write well without MS Word, whether or not it exists.) (In other words, there were excellent mathematicians before calculators, eh?)

I'm 16. I always type stuff on my laptop. Because I am from an upper-middle class family, I have had access to computers since 4th grade. I am sorry that my family can afford to buy a computer and because of that I have let my spelling skills go array.

I'm 2 years older than you and in the exact same situation. I got a brand new $2000 laptop for graduation and I've typed on computers since...well, let's just say I started on MSDos and Win 3.1...so it's not really a good excuse. If you hadn't typed on computers, it'd be a better excuse because you could blame it on bad typing skills.

I was talking about your corrections in general. This thread isn't meant for an English lesson, and nobody hired you as the teacher.
No one hired Jesus as a teacher, but he taught. No one hired Plato as a teacher, but he taught.
And the mistake you're talking about is probably the pronoun-antecedent agreement mistake of "that," however I never said I was perfect (especially at grammar).

It started off as me being glad that he is going back to school (since he obviously had something to learn still), but he kept bringing it back up again and again and griping at me about my posts.

Nope... It wasn´t that one... So there is actually more than one... Funny how it all comes together in the end=)

Well, like I said, I'm not perfect at grammar, and it's obvious that I don't take the type to revise all of my posts before I make them. However, I'd be more than pleased it you pointed out my grammatical mishap (and I'd be surprised if it was a spelling mistake...); you'd only be enlightening me.

Nevermind. I found it. That was really bad (although it's not something I would try blaming on typos. I'd just be annoyed for making such a simple oversight and then get on with life.)

If I am not quite mistaken then you have edited the text, so that it doesn´t say:

Just because the Bible connects Jesus to the Christian God does not automatically make Jesus fictional. I happen to believe (without a doubt) that Jesus was a real person (with a cool posse he called "The Disciples," they formed a rock band and it was good). Jesus, being a real person, taught real lessons. They are contained in the bible. I am not sure that I agree with 100% of his lessons, but there are good lessons in the book of his teachings. The same goes for Plato, and Muhammed, and others, etcetera.
EDIT: In an effort to not offend anyone, read "person" as "entity" that way it leaves it open so that he could be either a person or a human form of a diety.
I just joined this place seems like fun.

I must admit that religous debates does not appeal to me, and I am sorry for getting it started.. That wasn´t my intend. But since we are here anyway, I would like to point out that Jesus is the son of God... How can you then say that they need not have anything to do with each other???

The Bible claims that Jesus is the son of God.
The movie, Fahrenheit 9/11 claims a lot of things that even some liberals don't buy.
Need I explain further, or have I made my point?

I have actually not seen Fahrenheit 9/11... But if you say that we can´t trust the Bible one the subject of Jesus being the son of God, then how can we trust any of what is written in the Bible?? And thereby those lessons you were talking about... After all the Bible isn´t a pick ´n´ mix book of some strange sort!
So what is your point???

Eh...
Take everything with a grain of salt. I don't believe everything in Fahrenheit 9/11, but there is something to be learned from it. I don't believe everything in the bible, but there are some good lessons taught be the character known as "Jesus." Whether or not you believe in him is merely personal opinion (the same as whether or not you believe in any historical figure). I was merely pointing out that just because you don't believe in the Christian God doesn't mean Jesus didn't exist. Jews believe in Jesus, they just don't believe he was the son of God. Muslims give credit to Jesus for being a great prophet, they just don't believe he was the son of God.
Well then... I´ll just do with the Bible what I have always done... Left it to someone else to read it=)
I think the Bible is filled with stories, and as such it´s a great book (no match for the Harry Potter books of course - but ok). I just don´t believe the stories, just as little as I believe that there is a short darkhaired boy somewhere with a wand doing silly things to his family
And now! If no one has got any objections, I will go to sleep, after all it is a school day tomorrow :D And Opal Isle: If you feel the need to keep this discussion going, or to start a new one, feel free to contact me through my hounorable(?) country... Perhaps we could exchange msn, so that we could keep discussions going off site...
Yours sincerely for today

How about you just put me on ignore or get over it. I'm not hijacking the thread.
Actually, you were being obnoxious enough about it that I'm tempted to warn you for thread hijacking.
If someones spelling or grammar is bad enough to make their post unclear, then ask for a clarification. Otherwise, don't be obnoxious about it.
