the price of oil has achually been controled very closely.

If the same inflation that had been in effect on all other goods and services was applied to oil, it would be ridiculously expensive.

Too bad my salary hasn't inflated that much

Man oh man, I hope we're able to shift to a renewable energy source *soon*!

Uh, you guys are missing the point. They're comparing the price of other products (what they would cost per gallon) to the price of gas and saying "Quit yer bitchin'"

Of course, except that people rarely need to buy 20 gallons of Lipton's Iced Tea.

No...but some people buy 20 gallons of Lipton Ice Tea over the same time period as they use 20 gallons of gas. The main difference is that you typically don't fill up unless your tank is empty.

I don't know ANYONE who can consume 10 or 20 gallons of ice tea in a week. And thats about how much gas I gotta use to work.

Then again, I suppose restaraunts need a steady supply of ice tea. But thats different, its still a consumer luxury, whereas gas is considered what, a necessity? Industrial good? Anyway, the point is we buy gas because we *have* to, its more the being forced by machines to get things that most people really object to. At least it is for me.

No one is forcing you to buy gas. We could organize a boycott....
Besides, there are things like public transportation in a lot of areas that could be used...and even if you don't live in one of those areas, the price of gas would be cheaper for you if the people in those areas bought less gas (because there would be less of a world demand for gas). Also, I have to put only $18ish dollars worth of gas in my car every two weeks...

...and that comes out to a gallon of tea per week.

Not possible in most places round here. Public transportation is terrible. Walking, bicycling, too far. Economics demand a personal automobile, sadly mine gets the worst possible gas mileage and uses the most expensive kind. Economics now suggests I get a higher paying job. But I digress...

I *am* for other people using public transport more, more the merrier! :)

Yea...even if it is a little bit more inconvenient for you, public transportation helps everyone...
But anyway...you probably drive an SUV and it probably would have been less expensive for you to by a more fuel effecient vehicle, eh?

No SUV here. If I had money to be buying cars ... well, I wouldn't be driving what I drive.

Why not ask people what they are paying for gas in their area? that may put it into a "different" light on the subject... Just over the summer, here in Upstate NY we were paying close to $2.25-$2.30 a gallon. It's finally dropped back down to $1.89-$1.99 a gallon... it's scary when I can say that's cheap. I remember when gas was less than a buck....lol If ya smoke...cigarettes on average cost between $4.00-$5.00 a pack(carton-$40-$50). NYS has made it illegal to buy the cheap cigarettes over the internet, so the other alternative is buying them on the AF base or on the Indian Reservation, if you live near one...

Recently Solar energy has increased effiency by I think 20 to 30 % so companies and houses could stick to those for reducing gas and other bills.

The only bill that solar energy will help out with is the electric bill (and if you actually produce so much energy with your panels that you're putting power back into the system, some electric companies will pay you...)

One would think most companies could use the extra electricity, saves money, etc.

but it's not going to save you money at the gas pumps...
And the fact of the matter is that solar is too unreliable. You can't use solar during the night. You can't use solar on rainy or overcast days...you could put panels on the side of a building, but those would only be effective for like 6 hours max, etcetera, etcetera. We just need to turn Arizona and New Mexico into two massively huge solar panels.
