This type of test has been done numerous times. They have also discovered that if you were to write out a sentence with each word's letters mixed up, as long as the first and last letters of each word were correct, people would have little or no trouble reading it.

You subconsciously skip it because you're associating the "eff" sound with the letter. Doesn't mean you're dumb--just means that you're not looking for the symbol, but that you're looking for what the symbol represents in terms of sound.
