For those returning to a new year of college I was just wondering...

What is your preferred brand of cheap beer (bought for quantity) and overall favorite, regardless of cost.

If you don't drink, thats cool too. I'm just curious about what brand most people who do prefer. So please, no flaming.

cost no object i would normally choose Becks or perhaps Carlsberg. For getting drunk on the cheap, Tui, Lion Red or VB.

For el cheapo American beer, I prefer living the High Life. Light.
If you want decent beer, buy a six pack of Gluek Stite or Schell's Caramel Bock.

Well when I used to start drinking whenever liberty call came, it was Morretti(spelling?) a good italian beer or I think it is at least . Becks, Coronas, and the good ole tall cans of miller high life piss water.

My personal favs Killians or Sam Adams.

Keystone is good cost-wise. With cheap stuff you just have to get it down fast.

Jenny screamers are probably the cheapest (and crappiest) of all though.

I drink any beer to get drunk, but taste wise I'd have to go with Michelob Ultra.
But my favorite to drink is Colt 45 - if you consider it beer.

Killian's Red is one of my favorites.

I usually go with microbrews when I can. A select group of very good ones:

Apollo...fantastic but difficult to find
Alaskan Ale...very very good
Redneck...good flavoring
Saranac...avoid their berry flavors and you'll get a good beer
Oldenberg...Pious Ale is their best but they have 4 or 5 good ones
Mad Monk..stout, but good
Louie's Evil Lager...cheap, but very hard to find
Dead Guy....worth the cost

Red-tail Ale.

It's made by the Mendocino Brewing Company, a small brewery in northern California. Not only great tasting and potent, it has a really cool label. All their beers are named after birds of prey.

Hmm, never tried it but most certainly will be lookin for that one next time I drink a beer. Morretti has some old italian dude on the front of the bottle. I know they charge a bit much and its hard to come by, but it does taste very smooth and ripe.

I don't really get what's so great about Guinness. Of course, when I tried it it was after sampling various other beers so that probably ruined it. I'm not too picky as to what I drink, though.

When converting beer into vomit is my goal, it's usually Kokanee, or Molson Canadian. When I want a tasty beer on a social ocassion, it's got to be Alexander Keith's India Pale Ale. mmmm

Anchor Steam Beer from San Francisco, the original microbrew, is my favorite, although the beer that comes out of Abita Brewing Company in Abita Springs LA is what I grew to love in my early drinking days.

I don't drink cheap beer anymore, and absolutely refuse to drink anything from a large brewery. You really do get what you pay for when it comes to beer.

I can't really support any cheap beer. I would much rather have 1 good beer than 2 cheapos.
Some of my favs:
Bass
Newcastle
Guinness
Sam Adams Ale
Sierra Nevada Ale
Dominion Ale

And if I must have something low-budget:
Dundee's Honey Brown - Far more flaver than any other "cheap" beer I know of.

The best beer is micro-brewed and on draft. Bottles and cans do not do beer justice. Buy vodka and have martinis at home. They'll be five times (or more) cheaper. Go to a bar or restaurant or ale house to drink beer.
Comandante

Amen on the Microbrews. The best beers (in my opinion) go in this order

1. Chezch Budweiser (no relation to American Budweiser)

2. Bridgeport IPA

3. McMenamins Terminator Stout

4. Lowenbrau

5. Bitburger

6. Henry Weinhards IPA

7. Any Microbrewed Lager

8. Guiness Stout

9. McMenamins Hammerhead

10. Any Pilsner (of course, Bitburger is a pilsner, but it is the king of pilsners)

Granted, none of these are cheap beers (unless you are in Germany, then Bitburger and Lowenbrau are cheaper than water) so that kind of violates the spirit of the thread. But coming from a beer snob, these are kickass beers.

On a crisp spring afternoon: Tiger
On a hot summers day: San Miguel
On a damp autumn afternoon: Beamish Red
On a cold winters day: Jennings Schneck Lifter
At a house party: 'American' gnats piss (Budweiser or Miller, both brewed in the UK)
In the pub getting blootered: Tennants Lager
Something different: Kronenberg (sp?) Blanc (it tastes of Banana)

Of course local breweries produce the best beers, which don't travel well, so you should always ask for what the locals drink.

ingeneral the best beer is guinness.

Guinness was first a poor mans drink, it was, and is, made from rotten barley that is not good for anything else and so was cheap. I'm not sure when they changed their image to being an expensive beer, but have obviously done so quite sucessfully.

sweet stella, my favourite pils (allthough i am starting to dislike pils in general). I do prefer something like leffe, duvel, verboden vrucht, trappist rochefort ... With other words: something really tasty and with enough alcohol in it to force you to take your time over it.

now some stories about the trappist westmalle:
-once on a schooltrip i ordered one and then the teachers came in and told us we had 5 mins before the bus was going to leave. i had to drink it 'ad fundum' with the result that i was pretty tipsy.
-On a party my uncle, who is used to drinking alcohol, passed out after drinking 3 of these in half an hour.

I was planning on posting this link anyway before I read the whole topic. It's a fiiiiine brew. As to the name, anyone who has paid attention to my posts, especially in the UN Forum, would agree that it's totally accurate.

As for casual drinking, Sam Adams. The other American beers can be poured back into the horse.

cheap beer... well i think max ice is pretty cheap... if that's what it's called... molson makes it, but it's not an advertised kind of beer. it's 5.5%.

my favorite would be eitehr rickard's red, moosehead, keith's, canadian or heinekin.

GUINNESS!!!! I drink gallons of the stuff.

And a brew we have here in Louisiana called Abita. They make an amber that's a local staple and a stout that's different, but very, very good.

I tend to go for microbrewed stuff, in general, but larger brands I like, though they all pale next to Guinness (Get it?! PALE! wakka wakka) are St. Pauli Girl, Warsteiner, and just about anything else Germany has to offer. Heineken and Amstel, though the Dutch make much better beers than those. Corona and Dos Equis are also awesome. Pete's Wicked Ale is fantastic good beer. Every so often I get in a mood for a Sam Adams. Harp, with Guinness, makes a black n' tan. Then a few more Guinness' for all my homies that didn't make it in The Troubles. At this point I'll probably be pretty damned hammered...but I might polish the night off with something reliable....like another Guinness.

Rolling Rock is a good cheap beer in Pittsburgh, don't know if it's more costly elsewhere.
All around, I tend to be partial to darker beers (not so much stout/porter, too heavy). All time favorite is Molson Export which I encountered in my Toronto student days but it's hard to come by in Pittsburgh.

cheap college beers i was weaned on: coors light, high life (the champagne of beers), keystone, natty light, the beast (milwaukee's best), and - of course - ICEHOUSE

and i've had my share of nasty 40's too, for those nights when you just want to get drunk off $2. try playing edward 40hands one night, its great for getting wasted for $4.

good beer: honeyweiss and honeybrown

Cheap beer might have to be Schlitz, or PBR...getting drunk at a baseball game with plenty of hotdogs to battle the headache.

The belgians make fantastic beer. If you've never tried a Lindeman's Lambic, you owe it to yourself to splurge for a big bottle. The Cherry is amazing...crossing beer, wine, and champagne.

The Russian Balitika is also really good, i think its the number four (original)...two bad it doesn't cost the $0.05 a half liter anywhere except Russia.

But if there's only one choice to start or end the day or take a break in the middle, the choice is simple...real Guinness draft from good lines and a proper NO2 setup.

Never buy anything because it has a cool label...and amen to the earlier comment, the mass produced stuff can go back to the horse from whence it came.

Heniken isn't skunky in the Netherlands...where it comes in a brown bottle (tip, sunlight passing through green glass actually alters the chemical composition of beer...or so says a masterbrewer that i once knew. Same guy told me that the big breweries actually by "hop concentrate"...they aren't brewing shit, they're adding water and bubbles...just like they make soda)
