Read this funny article yesterday. Why doesn't Paul Martin just tell this lady to shut the heck up already? What are your opinions?

PM rebukes Parrish for new insult to U.S.
'Not joining the coalition of the idiots,' MP says about missile-defence program

OTTAWA -- The Mississauga Liberal MP who called Americans bastards last year called them idiots yesterday and then pleaded with reporters not to publish her remarks, saying she's had a "year from hell" and that her mother has Alzheimer's disease.

"We are not joining the coalition of the idiots," Carolyn Parrish told about 50 people who were demonstrating on Parliament Hill against the U.S. missile-defence program.

"We are joining the coalition of the wise."

An angry Prime Minister Paul Martin later took Ms. Parrish to task for her remarks after his national caucus meeting: "There is no room in this debate for that kind of language," he said.

Last year, Ms. Parrish apologized in the House of Commons and to U.S. Ambassador Paul Cellucci for saying in the lead-up to the U.S. invasion of Iraq: "Damn Americans, I hate those bastards."

However, when first asked about her comments, Ms. Parrish said they had not been for publication.

"If you use it, don't bother calling here again," she told a Globe and Mail reporter.

Yesterday she tried a similar tactic, first denying she had called Americans idiots and then begging reporters not to air her remarks:

"Please, guys, don't put that on TV," she said. When one reporter reminded her she hadn't called Americans bastards this time, Ms. Parrish said: "No, no. I already got into trouble once . . . and I've had a year from hell." She added that she has "a mom with Alzheimer's." She also said that she didn't mean to say the Americans were idiots.

Her comments last year touched off a firestorm of controversy in both Canada and the United States. They were even part of a segment on a CNN program about anti-Americanism.

This time, however, Mr. Cellucci did not appear to be upset, saying in Labrador, "Canada is a free country, people can express their opinions how they see fit.''

Still, Ms. Parrish is not the only Liberal politician who opposes the U.S. program. Inside the private caucus meeting yesterday, Ms. Parrish, reading from a prepared statement, was applauded by some members for her stand against the missile-defence program.

According to insiders, she said joining the program would "widen the base for terrorism" and would "eliminate the border for terrorists." She continued to speak against missile defence outside of the caucus meeting before addressing the protesters, even noting to reporters -- rather prematurely as it turned out -- that she hadn't said anything "bad."

Mr. Martin acknowledged yesterday that the missile-defence issue is a hot topic among his caucus members: "Well, the fact is that caucus has different views on a wide range of areas and that's perfectly natural," he said.

"And that's what caucus is all about. It is about those kinds of debates, and it is about reconciling different positions and coming to a common conclusion. That's what one would hope. A caucus of that kind of quality you are going to get very strongly held views. But let me tell you that those strongly held views have got to be expressed in language that is acceptable."

Mr. Martin's comments came at the end of a three-day national caucus retreat. Behind the closed doors yesterday he heard from many MPs about what they want in the October Throne Speech.

Senator Laurier Lapierre told him to "throw out his Throne Speech" and "speak from the heart," according to an insider.

The Prime Minister told his caucus members about the importance of staying together as a cohesive unit. One insider said the Prime Minister told them that "any bickering, any concerns you have keep in here, any debates need to occur in caucus . . ."

But the missile-defence issue could prove hard on caucus cohesion. The Prime Minister needs a united caucus to get his agenda through this minority Parliament.

Earlier this month, Canada and the United States expanded their military co-operation by having NORAD, the joint Canada-U.S. military organization based in Colorado, transmit radar and satellite monitoring to the U.S. command dealing with the missile-defence system. Some Canadians view this as the first step toward joining the program.

Defence Minister Bill Graham said then that the government was keeping open its options. "This does not have to be an incremental step to anything."

I disagree. She stated aloud what most Canadians think: which is that the antimissile shield project is stupid, and a waste of money. You'd be surprised to hear that 3 out of 4 Canadians(rough estimate) opposes this project.

Although I concur she did NOT choose the right words to express her opposition. The project may be stupid, but calling americans idiots because they support it is being needlessly rude. Personnally I believe she should apologize for her choice of words, but not for the position she has taken.

Well how I feel on missle defence has nothing to do with how I think of her (if she said something like " I think Missle Defence is a waste of money and not a smart idea" I would have alout more resspect for her)

Actually what is sort of funny is that Martin ran on the platform to get elected that if elected he would pull Canada out of the deal. So, I'd say a little hypocrisy on the part of our PM there. Of course he may of just been giving her crap about saying "idiots" , but he got elected by saying we wouldn't take any part in the project.
