Absolutely. Anyone whose album gets as much publicity as his did is clearly a singer, no matter how awful his voice, or how little professional training of singing he's had.

This assumes that they initially became famous on the basis of their musical ability, but that is not always the case. I'm sure you're familiar with William Shatner, for example, who would never have had his recordings released if he had just dropped them in to an A&R man without already being a star.

Not according to Fowler: "nouns of multitude may be freely used with either a singular or plural verb, or be refered to by pronouns of singular or plural meaning". Coldplay may be refered to as a band, or as a collection of individual members that comprise that band.

Agreed, but even more mainstreem groups like the Beasties, Run- DMC, Grandmaster Flash, and Cypress Hill are good. Also, rap rock is good (ie. RATM) but not rap metal (ie. Also, rap rock is good (ie. RATM) but not rap metal (ie. Linkin Park, Korn, and death metal/nu-metal company)

I find it an interesting historical footnote that some of the first rap heard by a lot of people in the UK would have been that version of rap rock purveyed by the Clash (Magnificent Seven/Radio Clash/etc.) or Blondie (Rapture - which IIRC was the first song with a rap in it to chart in the UK).

I'm not a fan of the Linkin Parks or the Korns of this world, but some rap-metal crossovers work a lot better than others - Helmet & House of Pain, or Anthrax & Public Enemy being examples of interesting fusions in my opinion.

I was actually refering to the version of 'Don't Believe The Hype' that they recorded with Anthrax, but I suppose their own 'Party For Your Right To Fight' and 'She Watch Channel Zero ?!' are as equally metal as they are rap.

Possibly proto-rap, in much the same way that the Rolling Stones or the Who were proto-punk, but not rap as it is now commonly understood. One can look at toasting MCs and DJs from the dancehalls of Jamaica from the same time period and see a much stronger influence, but whether you include their ska/reggae/rock-steady music within 'rock' depends on how wide a definition of the term you are prepared to employ.

EDIT: one can also look to the beat poets who were earlier in performing their works to the spontaneous accompaniment of mainly jazz musicians for another form of proto-rap, but again whether you include that within the category of 'rock' is up to you.

You'll want to have a listen to 'Rapture' by Blondie then from 1980, or 'Magnificent Seven' (1981) or even 'This Is Radio Clash' (1982) both by the Clash.

"Walk This Way" (1986) for some reason gets credited as being the first time that rockers and rappers worked together... why nobody ever seems fit to mention that the Clash were working with the rapper Futura 2000 years before this... ah found a mention:

http://www.beyondmedia.org/finaltech/hip-hop/timelines/TIMELINE-2.html

"1982 * Popular graffiti artist Futura 2000 puts out a record with himself rhyming called "Futura 2000 and His Escapades" with music done by the Clash, signifying the beginning of the rock/rap fusion."

Yes, I know of what I speak. The Beastie Boys released "Fight For Your Right" which contained the line "You gotta fight for your right to party" in 1986, then Public Enemy sampled the line, cut it up, shuffled the order and respliced it back together again to create the chorus of their "Party For Your Right To Fight", which appeared on their "It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back" LP in 1988.

It may not have been a particularly good beginning to the rock/rap fusion, well actually it stank compared to some of the rap/rock crossovers the Clash had been doing under their own power, but it was nevertheless claimed to be the first time that artists from the two camps collaborated.

It isn't that I don't like Amy Lee as a person, I don't even know her. I hate her voice. The first time I heard an Evanesance song on the radio this was me, "Dang! Who IS that?" And of course I turned the station after about 30 seconds. I do not like her voice, simple as that. It just doesn't appeal to me at all. To me, it sounds like she is singing through her nose, and sounds like she is really strained.

You die now. There is no rap in Come Together. There is a difference between speaking in a song and rapping. Please do not taint the Beatles.

Worst Singer: Any of thoes shitty pop stars who are all synthesized (Hilary Duff, Britney Spears, etc. But not Christina Agulera. She's actually a really good singer) and who don't write their own music.
Worst Rapper: I can appreciate Hip-Hop and Rap, but I really hate all thoes sell-outs (Eminem, Nelly, etc.) who only do it for money. They don't give a shit about the music.
Worst Band: There are a lot here because I've heard probably thousands of bands. However, one that really sticks out is Good Charlotte: 1. They're not real punk, 2. Their music is complete shit. Avril Lavigne too... she tries to be punk and fails miserably.

- I'm not sure if his singing is actually bad, since I never listen to him but he is beyond weird to the point that I think he may actually be some sort of demon trapped in what resembles a human body-

Worst Rapper: Gangster Rap and most other rap. Too many to name
Worst Singer: Ashlee Simpson (I was bored and saw her live with two other bands. Only one of the three was good, and it wasn't Ashlee Simpson, she really was not as good as she was hyped up to be)
Worst Band: Good Charlotte uuuugh

I would have to agree with the White Stripes not being very good. Yeah, they have some good songs, but as musicians they are really not good. And boy bands and bands of singers don't count as bands! They need instruments to be bands! GRRRR!

Of course you may consider me prejudiced, what with me being a Ska Kid.

What is this concern with writing your own music? Neither Presley* nor Sinatra wrote their own music - does this devalue them as singers?

* mostly.

By that I meant they just go into the studio, read a lyric sheet and sing then leave. At least Presley and Sinatra got to know their songwriters (mostly, unless they were dead) and got to know the music and such. But these pop stars don't care, they just want money.

I'm a songwriting musician and am working on a debut album. I have 2 covers, but that isn't what I'm describing. It was a bit generalist, I know.

Agreed. Amy has a great voice and fairly good range. She needs to ditch Evanescence though.I don't think Amy Lee has a bad voice, but I don't necessarily think her voice is best suited to the kind of rock Evanescence plays. She sounds like she'd be better off in a choir than fronting a rock band.

I hesitate to paint all singers who don't write their own stuff with the same brush because some are great even though they don't do much writing (Tina Turner or Linda Ronstadt for instance). However, I have more respect for people who write their own material for the most part.

I only started writing lyrics the last two years or so, but I've had a couple songs get some music put to them by musician friends. I wish you best of luck in your album efforts.

The worst music of any kind is definitely Tom Arico. He posts as "tarico" on www.mxtabs.net, and called himself "The Republican Rockstar". He pretends to be more famous than he really is (On the "live" tracks on his site, you can tell the crowds are faked). It's both sad, and hilarious.

Also, on mxtabs he post uber-right wing bullshit, gets his argument torn apart by liberal and conservative alike, and then refuses to debate anyone.

If you want to see his retarded website, don't say I didn't warn you.

Rod Stewart sounds like he smoked 1000 packs of Camels before he sings. His voice is like a cheese grater on my brain. ABBA is terribly high pitched and whiny. It gives me the urge to bitch slap someone.
Also, I'd like to add Janis Joplin to that list.

Heh. That song plays when I start up my computer.

Nickelback, Creed, D12, Snoop Dogg, 50 cent, Busta Grooves, Vanilla Ice, Nelly, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Wesley Willis, Celine Dion, Good Charlotte, Blink 182, Sum 41, Segression, Poison, Puddle of Mudd, Hoobastank, Saves the Day, Shannon Noll...I could go on forever.

Bands that used to be good but have turned into steaming pieces of shit:
Offspring, Greenday, Silverchair, Korn, Slipknot...

I've tried to be fair here. I like a bit of all genres but I think that these "artists" are nothing but complete aural shite.

Nah. Try the 1950s gameshow "What's My Line" - several people would claim to have a certain job and then the contestants would quiz them and decide which one they believed. The host would then ask "Would the real sagger-maker's bottom-knocker* please stand up"?

Nirvana was more of a movement than a Band. To say it was a bad band means you totally missed the point of the Grunge Era and the Revolution of Sound that came with it.

Without Nirvana bringing in, we'd all still be listening to Hair Metal...yikes

the worst of all has to be britney spears. i was flipping through the channels and i caught one of her live preformances. she was wearing a face mike and lip syncing. then they handed her a handheld mike and she was still lip syncing. two mikes?????? then she sat down behind a piano where the camera didnt let you see her hands. (still lip syncing) she then got up while the piano was still playing. what makes her soo special that any of my girl friends couldnt do that. btw if you gave my girl friends eating coaches personal assistants personal trainers and whatnot they would look twice as good. again i ask you...why her?
