The parallel can be drawn between the effects of AIDS on the human body and Mao's statement “let a thousand flowers bloom, a hundred schools of thought contend" - the organic substance of the flesh is no longer driven solely by the evolutionary imperative to pass on undamaged genetic material, instead it becomes a garden for a thousand flowers of conflicting biological demand and cellular desire. No longer does the capitalistic drive to pass inheritance to offspring sit centre stage, it is usurped by the manifold creations and demands of a hundred schools of subcellular creativity which care little for posterity but seek to blossom in the present.

I wasn't thinking in terms of cancer. There are obvious inherent flaws (genetics) with the system (human body) and it is the job of the secret police's (white blood cells) job to eliminate those threats to the body. It's a shame that the police can't do it on their own and have to ask for foreign aid (medicine.)

I find it interesting to imagine myself part of the threat as an argument against the old philosophical idea called the organic theory of the state, which views the state or nation as a single living entity and applies the same ethical principles to its constituent parts as would be applied to a single living organism that had contracted an illness or other internal malaise. The organic theory of the stae is basically a short cut towards legitimising authoritarian and totalitarian regimes, be they fascist or stalinist or anything in between - if a part displays sickness or weakness it must be destroyed for the good of the whole.
