With a record number of events in this years olympics is it time to say that there are to many?
Should sports like sailing, tennis, baseball and football really be olympic events?

Yes, it means i get more to watch on tv, and like you say gives lots of different people the chance to go to the olympics (or just allow America to win more medals...)

No there are not too many sports.

Which original sports?

When the Baron set it up, they had tug-of-war as a sport!

If the sport is played in a large amount of countries, why not allow it?

The Olympics happen every 4 years so a couple weeks is not that bad.

Besides, nobody said you had to watch them! ;)

But why should football be in it? The olympics football competition probably isn't even in the top 10 footie tournaments in the world!

What I'm saying is that the olympics should be the ultimate tournament and with some sports e.g. football, tennis, baseball, it is not the biggest tournament.

More diversity in the olympics?

I don't think sailing should be a sport because there are too many variables in it. Mostly, the place on where you sail will really determine how you go through the race. Also, one ship could be in an area with more wind. So, nature will be the largest factor in sailing.

Then again, I would like to see arm wrestling as a sport (even though some people consider it just a minor game).

Anyway its no secret that baseball, tennis and basketball were only included in the olympics on the request of the US because they were big in those sports when they were added.

I thought sailing was run over a period of days for that very reason, to eliminate the problems/assistance the weather can provide

Another point with sports like sailing and cycling is that only the rich countries can afford to compete. Is that what the olympics is about?
It costs millions to develop the bikes needed for the cycling.

The only reason it's not in the top ten football tournaments in the World is because people who have played for major tournaments, or something like that, can't take part.

yeah the rules are you've got to be under 23.
Thats my point - WHY INCLUDE FOOTBALL? Apart from it gives Bush a chance to take advantage of. RE: His recent comments about the Iraqi team.

There should be many, many more sports in the games. Like in the days they had artistic 'olympics' the same time the athletes were sweating away. Ballroom dancing, poetry and painting should be olympic sports too! Hell! we have gym, diving, that fancy riding i don't know the name of , and many, many more 'sports' in there. More judges to the olynmpics, is what I say. The controversy is nice. "Will s/he got to keep the medal?".

Baseball is VERY popular in the Americas. I know, because i live in Latin America and im a U.S. Citizen. The American baseball team didnt even QUALIFY to go to the olympics. The Mexicans beat them, thats how good Latin Americans are.(Softball is a different sport than Baseball, but the main difference is that its for women).

The essence of the olympics is the CHANGE! I mean, there are around 170ish Countries in the World. Each region has its own sports. Its not fair that the United States, one of the most Athletic countries in the world, would be forced to play only European sports! I think that MORE games should be added. The Olympics is a blending of Cultures, each of them should be represented. Taking all of the games out and only leaving the old games would 1. shorten the Olympics greatly, 2. not be as fun, 3. only the Greek culture would be represented and 4. all the old games were MALE ONLY.

Times Change, so should the games.

I don't actually know if China and Korea have national table tennis teams, but the sport is way popular in Asia. So if you go to Asia I'd keep your mouth shut. ;)

Ah yes, expecially when full VR comes out. Imagine, playing the part of a Warrior on a virtual battlefield, where you actually MOVE and you wear virtual ARmor. Except you play against other Athletes. That would own. Plus it would get rid of the major cause for fatness, coach-potatoing, because then the people will actually have to RUN the 5 miloes from Hyrule to the Zora Domain :D.

Asians take table tennis very seriously in fact while most nations that ofer prizes for medals offer the same rate no matter what sport it is in, japan offers different amounts per sport with table tennis as one of the top ones (around $200,000 I think). But I really enjoy having all the sports because if you took away some of the smaller sports some of the smaller countries might not have a sport. And even though I hate the game, soccer (football) should be an olymipic sport because it is one of the most popular sports in the world, what we need is good old fashoned american football to spread to other countries so we can have that in the olympics, same goes for rugby. But why do all you people watch soccer?!!! You should be out rowing like real wo/men. Rowers are the most physically fit athletes in the world for all around fitness. It is a great sport which I love (even though it is painful). And before all you people make remarks about rowing and the whole "there is no 'i' in team, let me say this there is an 'i' in win.

disclaimer: I apologize to anyone I offended by insulting soccer, im sorry it just sucks.

Long legs?!! You would be perfect for rowing!!! Your fast?!! Perfect!!! If you wanna know what a 2k is like in rowing its like doing 250 leg presses down a course (and the olympic one is beutiful, almost as nice as the one at St. Catherines Ontario, *sigh* why do I have to live in Detroit.)

Well, then theres the whole thing that my hand eye-quardination is horrible... but if someone manages to pass me the ball i usually touch-down(in american football). In Soccer(european Football), i just run out of energy and flop. I hate that sport with a passion. Fun to watch, not so fun to play.

Funny thing.. one of my hobbies is the SCA. I wear armor, and participate in tournements with rattan swords/axes/maces etc. against others 1v1 and sometimes in "wars" which can be as big as 5k vs 5k. It's a huge blast, and no technology necessary. :D
