dick is in trouble with the republicans for opposing a constitutional ammendment banning gay marriage. his daughter is lesbian, it looks like even republican blood is thicker than water.

Waterford, Mich. -- Vice President Dick Cheney spelled out Tuesday his differences with President Bush on the volatile issue of gay marriage, while for the first time discussing the sexual orientation of his gay daughter in a public setting.

Asked his position on the subject at a town hall meeting in Davenport, Iowa, Cheney replied: "Lynne and I have a gay daughter, so it's an issue that our family is very familiar with. ... With respect to the question of relationships, my general view is that freedom means freedom for everyone. People ought to be able to free -- ought to be free to enter into any kind of relationship they want to."

Cheney went on to repeat the position he first outlined in the 2000 campaign -- that same-sex marriage should be left to the states to decide. He noted, however, that Bush has endorsed a constitutional amendment preventing the states from recognizing such marriages.

Cheney is too astute a political operative for this to have been a mistake. The timing of this statement, a week before the Republican National Convention, is too convenient. He's had several years to come out in defense of his daughter's right to the same freedoms enjoyed by everyone else ... so why now?

I think he's trying to deflect convention rumble towards this relatively minor issue to prevent the newshounds from going into the RNC on any stronger scent. As long as we concentrate on the difference on this one issue, we're less likely to challenge the fact that the RNC is presenting the Bush Agenda rather than the Republican agenda.

As cynical moves go, this is a good one. I despise Cheney, but he's damn good at the game.

and republicans rip on kerry for going back and forth on important issues? during the 2000 campaign, cheney said this was a states' issue; just before the congressional vote on the gay marriage ban, he backed the amendment 100%, and now he's back to thinking it's a states' issue. politics is such bullshit. well, maybe just politicians.

i still think cheney is an evil greedy bastard.

Hmmmm

I think that is nothing more then political talk just in time for the convention in New York.

I heard he is not on good terms with his daughter so I really doubt he belives that.....

I kinda figured that Cheney was dead and they just weren't telling people. This is the first time I've heard of him being alive since we found out he "survived" surgery.

Weird. I honestly don't care if homosexuals get married. It doesn't hurt me. My duty as a Christian is to let people know the Gospel, and the fact that it denounces gay anything, and let them make their choice. Tell the world, don't beat it into them.

Woot! The Bionic Man is now my third favorite Republican [edit- politician, that is.].

But I agree with Frisbeeteria, this is just a political move to soften any blows against the main points of the Bush campaign- most people don't vote based upon Gay Marriage alone and a debate over Gay Marriage is less catastrophic to the RNC then a fiasco over any other issue.

Not only this, if it is a real statement or at least is partially true, it shows that Cheney definately isn't completely in power over the Bush administration, debate the half-jokings to the contrary. Unless Cheney ordered Bush to oppose him. ;) [/conspiracy theory]

As a Christian, I must point out that the Gospel has absolutely nothing to do with gay anything. The Gospel is the good news of Christ, not a denouncement of homosexuality.

Many Christians like to fall back on the old Testiment when "judging" others.....
