I say, take a bunch of Irish, American, and whatever else teens (like 17 years old) and have them all do drinking contests. I bet the Americans will do a great job, especially led by me. Hell ya!

What the hell are you talking about?

1] You've obviously never, then, heard of Shiner Bock, Barrington Dunkel Weizen, Samuel Adams Dark Wheat, and a host of other US beers. Not to mention, there isn't a single beer made anywhere in the world that we can't get here in the US via import like Guinness, Dos Equis, Polaner, etc etc.

2] All pilsners - like Molson - are watered down moose piss. What do you expect? The British invented them. (blargh) Our worst are the American Pale Lagers like Budweiser and Coors and the only people who drink that crap are Frat Boys and White Trash.

3] Beer (except Guinness and Negro Modelo) is for wimps. Drink bourbon.

Ok, this is ridiculous. Just because something tastes awful doesn't mean drinking it makes you a tough guy. Bourbon is awful. Period. Oh, and by the way, Guinness, while delicious, is only 4.4%. Not exactly strong beer. What makes other beer for wimps, anyhow? Ever had a MacEwen's Scotch Ale? How about La Fin Du Monde? I think your 'beer is for wimps' classification is rather narrow.

Secondly, it's tough to get any good American beer up here in Canada, since all they import is Bud, Coors, and other types of swill...I sure would like, just once, to find some Sam Adams around here, but then again, I do live in the boonies.

Lastly, Molson is a brewery, not a beer, and therefore cannot be a pilsner. Molson does brew a pilsner, called (if you can believe it) Pilsner. It is horrible. Canada would do well to introduce the world to its more flavourful beers. I think everyone should try Sleeman's Cream Ale at least once.

Oh man, does it make me an alcoholic that it took a thread like this to get me to make my very first post?

Not sure how closely this is related, but I'm in the mood for anecdotes...

Last week I went out drinking Greenwich. Greenwich is about 10 miles from where I was staying, and I can't remember how I got home at all... or how I got this sizeable wound on my head, which is about 5cm long. I remember being shouted at by some burly looking bloke in a car, so that might have been something to do with it, although I'm not sure I'd have got home if it was. I'm beginning to wonder if the wound is somehow related to the memory loss, because I'm sure I didn't drink up to my usual limit... Strangely, I got up at 6am feeling absolutely fine.

In conclusion, that's why blah blah blah great drinkers.

I really don't like beer all that much, especially American and Mexican beers (although a Corona is good, but only with the lime!). And I HATE light beers! BLECH.

Nah ... Sam Adams Lager isn't all that good ... but, if you get a chance, try the Dark Wheat ... nummy! Almost as good as Guinness.

The Buds, Coors, and Millers are so prevalent because they have the most money. Cheap product == lots of sales.

My favorite beer of all time is Celis White (an American beer). It's a hefeweizen that used to come out of Austin, TX but I heard that one of the major beer companies bought them out and shut them down. I haven't seen Celis in a while.

Fat Tire makes the best Ale.

Here's my list on beer bests: (These are must get at any cost beers)

American Pale Ale - Hale's Moss Bay Amber
Bitter - Fuller's Fuller's ESB
Bock - Shiner Bock
Belgian Ale - Celis Grand Cru
Stout - Guinness Draught
English Brown Ale - Rogue Nut Brown Nectar
Barleywine - Sierra Nevada Bigfoot
German Dark Lager - Ayinger Altbairisch Dunkel
Lambic - Boon Framboise
Trappist - Chimay Premiere
Pilsner - Christoffel Blond

Right now, though, I am drinking a nice Australian Port. :D

I'm mostly a bourbon man - and, no, bourbon is not nasty, it's a blended whiskey made from sour mash. Just like any whiskey, it has its rotgut (Jim Beam, Old Kentucky) and its finery (Maker's Mark). So a big fat razz to the guy who said it was nasty.

In my experience, the only alcoholic drinks that americans have the first idea about are cocktails. The beer's watered down piss and anyone who's tasted Scottish malt wouldn't touch Bourbon with a poo-stick. Ah, but Manhattans, Martinis, Margaritas, pink gins ; they're yummy.

The poll misses the Czechs. I´ve read that they have the highest consumption of alcohol in Europe. Though that may be influenced by the many tourists in Prague. Pilsener is after all a very popular beer.
I personally don´t drink much. And I don´t have much tolerance to alcohol. Although I´m German.

every poll on the consumption of alcohol ive heard in recent years has put Ireland ahead of any other country in Europe. I may be wrong, but we're constantly being warned about this.
apparently we consume the most food per capita too, but that might just be EU countries.

I think we might be the best drinkers (im bias of course), because drinking just seems to be everpresent in our society. most other pastimes are a thin disguise for a drinking session. i was in Belgium in July and they do drink a fair bit and they have got great beers (not just talking Stella here!). The Dutch really dont drink much though.

I would definitely put the Russians up at #2 though.

um, excuse the disjointed rambling nature of this post. im sober.

I've tasted many a Scottish malt and I still prefer Bourbon.

I'd put Maker's Mark (finest Bourbon Whiskey) up against Glenfiddich (finest Scotch Whiskey IMHO) any day.

One thing Americans do well is distill spirits. Like any nation we have our rotgut, of course, but our finest is among the finest in the world.

It doesn't answer who are the best drinkers, but in terms of who drinks most, it's Luxembourg. According to this report (p 11): http://www.aihw.gov.au/publications/phe/sdua00/sdua00.pdf
in 1998, Luxembourg was the country with the greatest per capita consumption of alcohol. Coming in second was Portugal, and France was third.

In terms of the ones listed in the poll:

3rd France (10.8L/person)
4th Ireland (10.8L/person)
5th Germany (10.6L/person)
7th Spain (10.1L/person)
16th Netherlands (8.1L/person)
17th Russia (7.9L/person)
19th Australia (7.6L/person)
21st UK (7.5L/person)
27th USA (6.5L/person)
30th Canada (6.2L/person)

It's all that wine. The Irish could be topping lists (well they are, but even more so) too if many of them drank wine at every meal.

This isn't about total consumption anymore. These people are debating which nationality can imbide the most at one sitting. That, and beer.

Kind of hard to compare, id say. There are the Belgians/Czech/Germans, who are top ranking as beer drinkers, France/Italy/Portugal/Spain as main consumers of wine and the heavy liquor nations like Russia or Finland. Each drinks are very different to consume and the body builds a slight immunity, so in a drinking contest each specialist would win in his discipline. ;) That would put the Irish on top, since they are strong contenders on both beer and liquor.
I can drink beer all night long (thats german or belgian beer to you) and stay coherent, but a few shots of heavy stuff put me down very quickly.

I think you're wrong on this. I really doubt that the form the alcohol is in matters. The intoxicating ingredient, alcohol, is still the same. Maybe you drink vodka etc. too quickly. Beer is better in the sense of "not drinking yourself to the bathroom quickly and puking because of alcohol", because its harder to drink very fast. Although when I was an exchange student in Scotland my German roommate showed me a very funny way to drink a beer can in a few seconds. That was so cool!
