I'm very proud to be a citizen of the USA. I wouldn't willingly live anywhere else. I'm also a proud resident of New Jersey. For me, it's the best place on earth.

I've always rather put the United States Government in the same category as Walmart-- it's got some serious problems, but I've got to buy my tooth paste some place.

Nationalist and proud.

Remember, to be nationalist is to be loyal to the people of the nation. Do not get this confused with Statism, which is loyalty to the state (Eg loyalty to the Queen in the UK, or to the government)

Also, do not confuse this with hatred of people of other nationalities. Nationalism has become a bit of a dirty word, especially since WW2 ended. Hitler invaded Poland under the pretence of his 'nationalism', which was obviously bad (not matter how much the Poles refused to compromise). Like a lot of things, bad things have been done in the name of nationalism, just as bad things have been done in the name of God, in the name of Liberty... I could go on. It doesn't make it a 'bad' ideology, only it means people have misused it in the past.

Remember, it has done marvellous good as well. Churchill used nationalism to generate the will to resist in the British. The American's used nationalism to show that 'fellow countrymen' had been killed, and the Japs needed to be tought a lesson. The Soviet Union stirred up nationalism for the 'Motherland', which had been practically banned up until that point, to help repel the Germans.

I have no love for the US. It has done nothing to earn my respect. It's just an abstract concept.

I'm not nationalistic about England. Mainly because no one else is ever nationalistic. We don't even celebrate St. George's day anymore, while the Irish, Welsh and Scottish go crazy on their respective patron saints' days, and Americans generally go all patriotic at the drop of a hat. The majority of English people act as if they hate their country.

I feel very patriotic toward the principles of the United States of America. They are principles I would gladly die defending. I had no difficulty swearing an oath to support, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States when I joined the Navy. The concept of a nation based on the concept that equality does not equate to homogeneity is one of the blessings of America.

That should not, however, be an excuse for arrogance. We were also founded by rich white landowners who felt that only white landowners should be able to vote. Now, just as then, equality is something that must be defended and nurtured if it's to grow.

That, and I think we have the best pie. :)

I'm Scottish, and I've never seen anyone go crazy on St Andrew's day (anyone who wasn't crazy on the other 364 days, that is). It's on 30 November, it's pissing rain (cold rain, not normal rain like we get in summer), and we all know we've got another 4-5 months to go before we'll see the sun again. Not much to celebrate. It passes by utterly unremarked. St Patrick's day is celebrated as an excuse to get hammered -- but then so is St Fri's day and St Satur's day. :)

I'm not particularly nationalistic about Scotland, although in my youth I did tend to lug a great big chip around on my shoulder over all the terrible things "the English did to us". Fortunately, I studied history, and managed to put it all into perspective. It's just a bunch of things that happened a long time ago, most of it didn't involve "the English" versus "the Scots" in any meaningful sense, and none of it is the fault or the burden of anyone alive today. I have voted SNP, and probably will again, but that's because I don't want to endure the likes of Thatcher and her hateful little weasels ever again.

Do I "love" Scotland? Yes, sometimes. Am I infuriated by Scotland? Again, yes, sometimes. Would I fight for Scotland? I can't imagine any likely circumstance where I would be required to, and doubt if I would. I certainly have no burning desire to die for Scotland. The same could apply to Britain as well.

Finally, a sane scot! (only kidding!)
Thanks for being one of the few who don't believe that the English are reponsible for every little bad thing that happened in Scotland ever!

I love Scotland too, especially Edinburgh. Wish I could say the same about my own "beloved" England...

I love the USA as a nation, but that doesn't mean I consider it perfect and it doesn't mean I like its leadership, not do I feel an obligation to "support" its actions. George W. Bush can go to hell. And I will say that as long as the land is still free, because if he gets re-elected I have my doubts if it will stay that way.

I could also give a damn less about my home state of Ohio. I have no loyalty to it whatsoever. It does not define me. If I were to have a loyalty to a subset of the U.S., I would pick a home city, not a home state.

You're welcome. :)

That's one of the things that infuriates me about Scotland: all the ignorant little pricks who think that everything bad in Scotland is the fault of the English. Probably, I have to admit, because it reminds me of when I was an ignorant little prick who thought etc. etc. and it's a bit embarrassing.

Yes, I love this country. I do support Bush, and even if you don't, If you think everything he is doing is worng, let me ask you this: Is it right for you, as the people of the United States, to force another man to "clean up" the mess you feel Bush has made? Do you feel that Bush should not be able to finish something he, this country, have started? So, if you do not vote for Bush on election because he is heloing people all around the world, vote for him so he may have the oppurtunity to "clean up" what you feel he has done wrong.
