Do people think Nebraskans are racist?

I was on this other thread and a poster made a really stupid comment about how you wouldn't think, "Nebraska, hmmmm...what a great place for a black man to live." And I was just curious, are Nebraskans really thought of as racist in other parts of the country? Or is the person that posted that just a stupid moron?

are there few black people in nebraska?

Answer to the question: No. My father is from Nebraska and he's not a racist.

No, it isn't a dumb question. That was one person's opinion. I want to know if there are other people besides Kissingly who feel that way.

I think they might seem to be racist, because not many people of any race other than caucasian live in that area. Well, at least that's what I've heard. Up here in north dakota, I certainly can see that there's very very few mexicans, asians, or blacks (african-americans if you must).
But, people up here seem really tolerant, I just don't think it's a likely place for other races to be. It's not really a migrant-ish sort of area.

There aren't tons in small towns, but in the three major cities (Omaha, Lincoln, and Grand Island) there are a lot of blacks. Sudanese (sp?) in particular.

Then maybe you should've said "How many people think Nebraskans are stupid, eh?" (and included the "eh" in there to sound Canadian, eh.) But really, you asked "Do people think Nebraskans are racist?" and by the looks of things, some people obviously do. End of story.

Not true. In Nebraska, at least in my town, whites are becoming the minority. At school at least half of the students are non-white (mostly Hispanic).

...Nebraskan's are very hesitant to change. Anything thats different from the status quo is viewed with distrust and negative thoughts right off the bat. I'm from a mixed asian-american family, so I ought to know. On top of that, kids are typically cruel, so needless to say I hate Nebraska...

Another reason North Dakota wouldn't have lots of african-americans would be because the north of the U.S. never depended on slave labour anywhere as much as the south did. The south seemed to have imported lots more slaves from africa. So that doesn't necessarily make North Dakotans more racist. It's not like there was an equal spread of african-americans in the U.S. and somehow they all moved to Missouri and Georgia because they got treated sooooooo much better down there. Duh.

I live in southern Minnesota, I go to Nebraska about once a year and I don't think that they are racist, there just aren't very many black people there. TONS of old people though. In my town, there are about 5 black people. I'm not racist, but some older people are though. Well, not so much racist as, "Look at that persons skin!! It's so dark!!!!" They are more surprised then racist.

That's odd, because I've never heard a racial comment from a kid (and trust me I'm around them a lot) in Nebraska. The only slightly racist people in Nebraska are the really ancient people. The old people who grew up with racism.

erm.
1) a lot of blacks moved out of the south to go to big northern cities and what not.
2) North Dakota was Indian territory at the time of the civil war and therefore was never heavily populated until after the outlaw of slavery.
3) Bismarck (the ND capital) doesn't really abreviate well like NYC, ATL, STL, LA, CPT, etcetera so it doesn't really work well in rap songs.

Hah...I live in Lincoln, and for the most part, Nebraska really isn't that racist. I could see why people would think that, though...We have a surplus of middle age Republicans in our state, and I don't think they really like our minorities all that much. Someone said something about us being afraid of change or something on that line...No, just our old people. They're agianst giving out jobs to minorities, and that makes it really tough for some people to get a job. Lincoln and Omaha both have a good sized African American community, and in the recent years, Lincoln has had more and more Eastern Asians come, mostly from Korea, Vietnam, and some from Thailand. My highschool has 2000 people in it, and over a third (probably alot more) is minorities.
It's sad to think that we're a racist state, but the truth is we don't have a lot of minorites around in most places but our 3 largest cities. Hope that clears a some of that up.

I know there's not many people up here, but percentagewise it's still very low.

Yup, when I went to Colorado, we drove through the sandhills. Man, they just go on and on and on. I would rather stare at miles of cornfields, at least when you are driving by them a crop-duster will occasionally fly over the highway.
