i feel strongly bout stuff like this, fear me:

1) learn to spell; it's guitarist

2) slash? santana? kirk hammet? dudes ur both outta ur minds

k, those 3 r very good guitarist, but the greatest guitarist of all time is Jimi Hendrix. And if u mean still alive, David Gilmour. Hell those three r good, but they just don't match up to Hendrix/Gilmour.

You are right about Hendrix but I still think slightly over rated. Sorry but my opinion. (he skipped my mind the first time)

23-08-2004, 21:06
Jimmy Page, no doubt about it.

Even if some peoples want to claim that Clapton is god, I don' think he's good enough to be in the same league as Page.
Jimi Hendrix is not good. He tried stuff with distortion. That's it.

Clapton of course, Rory Gallagher, Angus Young, Hendrix was O.K but used to many effects he was better in his earlier career when he played for the likes of The Isley Brothers.
B.B King, listen to the feeling in his tracks.
Listen to any of the old guitarists, try Jeff Beck, Muddy Waters, they all put feeling into their music, whichis all part of playing the guitar.
It's not all about noise.
Slash, i am sorry but he just does nothing for me.

If you mean acoustic then Dave Edmunds (download the song Sabre dance, never heard it but it is said to be wonderful) is number one.

When it comes to electric I am not so sure, Jimmy Page is excellent, but I also love John Marriot (from the Small Faces), and especially as a pioneer of rock.

The best guitarists of all time are Kirk Hammet and Angus Young, in no particular order.

23-08-2004, 21:23
Kirk isn't that good. Metallica broken apart suck. They're only good because they play really well together. In perfect harmony.

Slash is pretty good....all the old rock bands.

Anything Yngwie-ish sucks, I'm sorry, but if I wanted to listen to fast blips I could just turn on techno, those people play fast because they have no talent underneath it.

k, time to rant a bit more... mwa ha ha...

nyways, some of u sed bout Hendrix not being that good, just using lots of distortion/effects. Although thats true it did nothing to sour the fact that he's an absolutely amazing guitarist, and comapred who most people my age consider to be a good guitarits (kurt bloody cobain) Hendrix using distortion/effects isn't all that bad at all. Plus he gets in some kick ass solos, don't ye deny it.

i'm also surprised that nobody else has mention David Gilmour. Surely you people have heard of him? And if so, surely you're bowled over by his superiority, especially seeing as Slash, Jimmy Page (like both of 'em) and Eric (bloody) Clapton are mentioned as being 'the best' surely you'll admit Gilmour beats them all, hands down?

Anyways, I've got a question for ye all:

Most people I speak to claim either Brain May or Eric Clapton or Kurt Cobain are great guitarists. I'd agree with Brain May, yet I've haven't seen anyone mention him yet, so my question is, what do you think of those three?

Carlos Santana, hands down. Say what you want about Page, Hendrix, Clapton, Young or Couburn, none can match Carlos in longevity, style and technical skill. Lots of people have made a guitar scream, Carlos has mastered the art of making one sing.

Some questionable choices so far...
Jeff Beck is technically amazing but musically just plain uninteresting...

I'm surprised there are metal guitarists up but noone mentioned dimebag Darell.

I don't want to claim anyone's superior to Hendrix, page, or some of the other greats, but i would like to add Trey Anastasio, Bonnie Raite and robbie robertson.

I'd say the current golden trio is Clapton, Beck, and Page. Out of those three, Beck is my absolute favorite. He plays with guts.

24-08-2004, 00:18
My favourite is John McLaughlin. He is primarily a jazz guitarist, but he can play anything, from rock (Mahavishnu Orchestra, teacher to Jimmy Page) to Indian classical (Shakti) to flamenco (Guitar Trio). He always plays with such grace, eloquence, passion and beauty. In my view he is the greatest guitarist ever to live.

My favourite rock guitarist is probably Bill Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins.

However he will never play one note where 12 will do (and half of them will be in a very strange time signature).

Hendrix - Did loads to invent modern guitar playing techniques.

Page - Was an awesome guitarist. Anyone here heard 'Rock N Roll' in the 'How the West Was Won' Concert?

Slash - Once again an absolute beast of a guitarist. Heard his solo in 'Get In The Ring' in the UYI2 album?

Clapton - A god of guitar, although doesn't have the image so much as the rest, the skill is there for sure.

Van Halen - Another god. 5150 anyone?

Jazz: Al Dimeola

Funk: George Clinton.

Country: Johnny Cash.

Such a loaded question. It all depends on what kind of music the guitarist is playing. I mean, Eddie Van Halen is an amazing guitarist, but can he play the blues like B.B. King or Eric Clapton? Could Jimmy Page play like David Gilmour, or vice versa. It's like saying, "Who's the greatest football player of all time?" You can't do it. You could maybe ask, "Who's the greatest quarterback of all time?", just like you could ask, "Who's the greatest funk guitarist of all time?" But, there is no "greatest" guitarist of all time. IMO.

Well...If I said myself, it wouldn't be an entire lie, 'cause I'm the best guitarist at my High School, and sad to say, I'm the best some of the people at my high school have ever heard (Becuase by no stretch am I the best...yet!)

However, I agree with a lot of the post's here.

-G3 guitarist's rule musically. I saw the last G3 tour and Steve Vai was excellent. Joe was awesome musically, but as a performer...he sucks. Very talented, though!

-Yngwie Malmsteen. Surprised that I'm the first to mention him. I love his music, though, and consider him one of the best.

-Of course the classic's, like Hendrix, Page, Paige, Van Halen and Gilmour.

-Dimebag...very good...not the best, but very good at what he does!

And my personal favorite:

Randy Rhoads.

He rocked hard and died young. In my opinion, he already is the best, and if he hadn't died so young, I think he would have undeniably gone on to be the best!

As far as technicality G3 guitarists are the best, but there's more to it than that.

3. Slash
4. Mark Tremonti
5. Segovia

Actually, Billy Corgan wrote most all of the music for the Smashing Pumpkins. James Iha might have played it, and added a little bit himself, but most Smashing Pumpkins stuff was the brainchild of Corgan.

Jimi Hendrix. By a comfortable margin. All anyone has to do is listen to him play a 12-string acoustic(not his chosen guitar) and sing along in "Hear My Train A'comin." Recorded live. He does things with that guitar that very few other people could do on their favorite guitar

Other honorable mentions: Eric Clapton. Bo Diddly. Eddie Van Halen.

Here's one that nobody has said yet: Steve Vai.

what about Mark Knopffler, his slowhand is quite simply amazing.

i love a lot of other guitarists for speed, for style, but no one can touch this guy for being clean, listen to "wild theme" the theme from local hero, recorded live. This is the epitome of smooth chord changes. Also many other songs of course, IE: sultans of swing, brothers in arms you know...

BTW, in case you dont know who he is, its the lead from Dire Straits.

It's true that at times his guitar work was sloppy, but have you ever listened to "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You"? The fingerpicking and chord changes on that song are incredibly clean.
As far as his sloppiness detracting, when assessing another guitarist I look at technicality, musicality, and their ability to convey emotion. From what I've read people are putting more stock than I would into how fast or perfect someone's left hand technique is.

Also, I forgot Stevie Ray Vaughan from my list earlier, he should be just above Hendrix
