Idealism, how important is it?

Which is better in your opinions, for taking sides on a issue? understanding what the otherside is seeing that I might not be seeing?

Or understanding what my trusted liberal or conservative sources stance are taking on the issue? (idealism)

Or finding out both sides stances without bias one way or another, initially?

I'd have to say it is nearly impossible to look at both sides without forming your own opinion on it. Bias is bound to happen, but looking at both sides is the best way to go, that way you don't seem like an ignorant flamer when making arguements.

Agreed

It is hard not to inform some bias … but the first step is to realize the other side may have a valid point of view (at least in part)

You can be stronger by taking information and ideas from ALL sources … rather then limiting yourself to one ideology

if its something i know nothing about (and just how often does THAT happen)
ill google it and then read what both sides say. (if it interests me)

i am very seldom swayed by anything said on THIS forum but now and then someone makes a point that i hadnt considered or that starts another thought forming in my head.

in the rare times that its a topic that i havent seen discussed here, ill read through all the posts. i really hate it when i come to a topic im interested in and its already been hijacked beyond repair. especially when its been hijacked to a topic that has been done to death or has utterly no relevance to the original thread.

i have no "sources" that i trust more than my own ability to judge an issue

all looking endlessly at both sides will do is make you a moderate. and no one really cares for moderates, they are bland little milktoasts who sit on the fence until their bottoms become covered in puss filled abcesses from infected splinters.

I agree, with family and friends always being a factor of immediate biased information, along with only subscribing to certain kind of newspapers (local liberal papers) or watching only certain channels for news (fox news). But my personal way of going about it for the last 4 years has been getting as much info as possible from every valid left/right source I can, and then making a decision. I am more of one of those people that it completly depends on the issue first and foremost over what any side is taking. But thats only because I have friends and family that are such staunch partisans of both sides and I constantly get sick of hearing the hyperbole crap that they all splurt out, without actually knowing anything about the real issue. Like they say Auto-pilot voting would be the ideal voter for any party.

Voter apathy happens for both sides, but when it happens to a moderate they sit with thier thumb up thier ass. They need to not really pick a side, but just make up thier damn mind, if all the moderates voted for a third party there would be 3 solid party's without so much restriction the 2 party's make. But then again I don't see a third party that interests enough of the moderates to make a differnce, because they themselves are to diverse of a group.

It's spelled milquetoast. And your claim is unfounded and absurd.
