Keep the one we've got, but we should also have one recognised for England as Wales and Scotland have their own demi-national anthems. For such I would suggest Jerusalem, I Vow to Thee My Country or The Land of Hope and Glory (from where I draw my nation's name).

I think Rule Britannia is better known & more rousing.
A lot of people seem to think it is our national anthem anyway.
Save the queen from what?

Rule Britania is nice. It would make Britains anthem more simular to the American (The star-spangeled banner) or the French (The Marsaillese) ones.
Those are more patriotic anthems who refer to the early fights of those nations at the end of the 18 th century.
Rule Britania is not as martialic as those two but still goes more in this patriotic direction.
I like the current anthem as well but it only refers to the monarchy and not to the country. Probably Britain could have two anthems like Denmark, which has a royal anthem and a state anthem.

We should replace it with "la bamba"

Pravda-Raï Britain's essentially meant to be how Britain would be if i ruled it. The national anthem would be a modified version of John Mellencamp's 'Authority Song'. Fear teh Irony or something :P

Sinne Fianna Fáil,
Atá Fá gheall ag Éirinn,
That is about the sum total of wht I can remember/pronounce properly of the Soldier's Song. Bloody good song.
I used to know someone who used to claim it was illegal to sing in England (it isn't) and would take great pleasure in singing it (badly, remember my inferment that I couldn't pronounce things properly? Well I could do better).
God Save the Queen sounds like it was written by a mediocre GCSE student during an exam and the tune sounds like a funeral march.
Rule Brittania is too imperialistic for my tastes. I vow to thee my country is too full of that sickly nationalism that triggers my gag reflex.
I think either a new one should be commisioned (after Tony's out, could you imagine the tripe that new Labour would choose? "Things can only get better"). I like Jerusalem, but it is too England focused.
I think we should have The Red Flag to the original tune (The White Cockade) rather than the dirge that Labour sing to.

Ah, Rule Britannia. It would be so much better than God Save The Queen. We'd just have to wait a couple of decades so as to not offend the majority of voters (old people).
A National Anthem for England would be good too, and I'd suggest Land of Hope and Glory for that one.

Got to say when i heard God Save the Queen as rendered by people watching the Olympics in the pub the other day it sounded Teutonic and threatening like a Nazi drinking song.
it should generally be..."always look on the bright side of life"
or at funerals/state mourning occasions..."there is a light that never goes out"
or political/grand events..."something decent by Oasis or Verve"
not some ancient moralistic 19th century dirge !!
How about, 'Like a bat out of hell', the full thing.
Dump "God Save the Queen", for pity's sake. A tedious dirge with insulting verses, sung to the tune of a hymn originally composed by some French nuns beseeching God to help Louis XIV recover from a haemmorhoid operation. Great.
I vote for the theme from "The Archers". It's rousing, it's indisputably British, and we all know the tune, and the words too:
Tum-te-tum te tum-te-tum,
tum-te-tum te tum tum!
Tum-te-tum te tum-te-tum,
tum-te tiddley tum!
Tum-te tiddley tum-te tiddley tum-te tiddley tummmm,
tum-te-tum te tum-te-tum,
tum-te-tiddley tum!

I had no problem with God Save the Queen until Mike Harris wanted to put it back in schools... Fortunately it didn't fly, but...damn that was a scary moment in my life! That was almost as bad as making Canadians stand during "America the Beautiful" in the 5th inning... an insult to us! Luckily that lasted only one game at the Skydome before they ditched it.

To all the brits, do you recon that our national anthem is worht keeping, or do you recon something like land of hope and glory or rule britannia should take its place.
A new one should be composed which represents Great Britain, not just England and certainly not the monarchy, but the whole of Great Britain so that all the British can associate with it .... that is until all the 'British' nations go their own way!

Land of hope and glory sounds good. I think the European Anthem is great! Long live the European Union, long live Europe!
hey guy up there, don make Canadians sound ignorant please.
Soviet Russia is gone, fool. The Russian Federation is here to stay, although I think Mr.Putin is going to try to increase his power a hellofalot.
Then again,he may be pro Soviet...he did change Voldgrad's name back to Stalingrad for some reason...................
And national anthems, well,I personally think it would be simpler just to stick with what works and has been working forever, even if the message is outdated. But what do I know.

I've never minded God Save the (insert gender-correct royal title of the moment here), except that in too many performances it is played at a speed that makes a funeral dirge sound lively....

I don't think Putin changed Volgograd back to Stalingrad, as the city's been called Volgograd since Khruschev's time. However, he has brought back the soviet national anthem (the music, not the words) and i think he reintroduced Red Star battle flags in the military.

Rule Britannia is imperialistic. We don't really have much of an Empire any more. I'd be happy with Land of Hope and Glory, provided they change the lines which mention God.
Although of course, if I had my way, we'd all be singing The Internationale :D

I suppose the Internationale could be seen as Imperialistic. But it by far the best idea (after the Red Flag). Question is, do we sing it in French, English (in the original translation) or 'Modern English (a la Billy Bragg's rendering of it)?

You can see why the Scots are a bit touchy about it.
1. God save our gracious Queen,
Long live our noble Queen,
God save the Queen!
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us;
God save the Queen!
2. O Lord our God arise,
Scatter her enemies
And make them fall;
Confound their politics,
Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On Thee our hopes we fix,
God save us all!
3. Thy choicest gifts in store
On her be pleased to pour;
Long may she reign;
May she defend our laws,
And ever give us cause
To sing with heart and voice,
God save the Queen!
4. Not in this land alone,
But be God's mercies known,
From shore to shore!
Lord make the nations see,
That men should brothers be,
And form one family,
The wide world over.
5. From every latent foe,
From the assassins blow,
God save the Queen!
O'er her thine arm extend,
For Britain's sake defend,
Our mother, prince, and friend,
God save the Queen!
6. Lord grant that Marshal Wade
May by thy mighty aid
Victory bring.
May he sedition hush,
And like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush.
God save the King!
