You're kidding right? This is one of the most overplayed bands out there. Everyone and their brother/mother/aunt/dead great-great grandparents have heard them.

pink floyd
hawkwind
the beatles

three of the greatest bands ever, unappreciated, the first two not so well known. go listen to 'em. and coz i'm kind, i'll give u a few songs of theirs that r good:

pink floyd ~ comfortably numb, time, another brick in the wall (part 2), wish you were here

hawkwind ~ urban guerilla, silver machine, mirror of illusion, paradox, hurry on sundown

the beatles ~ get back, sgt pepper's lonely hearts club band, the ballad of john and yoko, let it be

I'm not sure the Beatles can be considered "underappreciated." Nearly everyone recognizes their influence on rock history.

As for Pink Floyd, I disagree with your "not so well-known" assessment. I think they're one of the more famous bands out there.

The killers are alright.
As is Lola Ray.
I'll assume you've heard of Rancid, the Offspring, and the Foo Fighters.
Not many people know of Ima Robot. They're good and werid, very weird.
Jet is all over the place right now, but they're still good.
You might or might not have heard of Meatloaf, depending on your age.
Live and Our Lady Peace I'll assume you've heard of.
And that's all I've got. Do what you will with it.

as far as talent goes, yes

they are so amazing for what they did with their music and their experimentation, and just their lasting influence.

Eh, I'll throw some obscure punk into the mix

-The Crush
-Face to Face
-Mustard Plug (okay, ska too)
-Jawbreaker
-Never heard of it

Kryozerkia: Kudos for including j-rock bands, but I'm docking points for including MM with X. Anyone interested in those lines but are a lil behind on J culture, look for GO!GO! 7188, The Pillows, L'Arc~En~Ciel, Porno Graffitti, and Asian Kung-Fu Generation.

Robert Randolph & The Family Band - I Need More Love

This is the best song I heard over the summer. Unbelievably good funk like you haven't heard in twenty years- fresh, passionate, it has that quality about it that forces you to start moving to the rythym...

And I'm not an afficianado of funk, either!

Sonata Arctica
DragonForce

Both metal. Sonata Arctica's not as hard, DragonForce is ridiculously fast. I can't even air guitar that fast, and I'm a pretty good guitarist and a DAMN good air guitarist. =/

Hmm...
Mozart. You can't beat him. You can't beat him with Willie Nelson on a bad hair day.
Anything from ocremix.org.
Nickel Creek - Bluegrass. If you cut them, they'd bleed talent.
Neil Young - If you don't know who this is, you're already dead. You just don't know it yet.
Metallica - It goes without saying that these guys rock.
Nobuo Uematsu - ...what? So I'm a gamer...sue me...

Check out 'Chump Change' if you like Blues/Light Jazz, too.
Susan Tadeschi - Not sure about that last name... She sounds like Janis and looks like The Girl Next Door. No lie.
Janis Joplin - The Queen of screaming. Err. Soul. Yes, soul...
Billy Preston - Nothin' from nothin' leaves nothin'.
Billy Joel - He's the piano man!

John Denver if you like Country...

DJ Liquid for some nice techno. Check out 'Jungle: Final Fantasy' (I picked it up by accident and almost shat myself)

Dr. Dimento - This is the guy who inspired Weird Al.
Weird Al Yankovich - He plays an accordian. Not much else can be said.
David Allen Coe - Another parody artist.
Rodney Carrington - ANOTHER parody artist, but he's so Southern, it's a wonder he's American.

That's all I've got on WinAMP at the moment.

alternative:
Buzz Poets- fun, eclectic
Joydrop- emotional chick stuff
Pulse Ultra- angry political rock
Boy Hits Car- indie-type stuff
Floggin Molly- Irish punk!

post-rock:
godspeed you! black emperor- strings, guitars, and lots of organized chaos, some sound bits
Set Fire to Flames- lots of chaos, usually no words
Tarentel- smoother, electronic, no words, good for chillin
Explosions in the Sky- emotional music with no words, two guitars and a drummer
Mogwai- more "alternative" rockish sounding emo indie type stuff
A Silver Mt Zion- godspeed's side project.
