In response to Jhenova's controversial thread "The evil that is Teenage Girl", I feel morally obliged as a teenage girl to respond. So I have. So nur.

Actually, I don't really think teenage boys are evil (despite the attention-grabbing title), just that the majority of them are kind of mixed up. Just like teenage girls. We all go through so much crap at this age, we should be supporting each other not deciding that one half of our age group are evil!

i would say, though, that males don't feel as much pressure to conform in terms of fashion and sex-appeal.. they have a better opportunity to be who they want to be.

Kids in Britain are just as varied (surprisingly) in their musical tastes as kids anywhere in the world. Where i live, tho, all the chavs are hip-hop/rap fiends!

I see your point. TV portrayals of girls my age used to really get me down. All the American import shows set in high schools used to really disturb me. Now, I know when to turn the box off!

I don't think most are "pressured" into conformity. Or that most people who conform secretly want to be different. If you're happy with yourself, that's the most important thing. Live your life the way you see fit.

Interesting post, and to think I came here out of boredom... Well, anyway, I got a few things to add. (Is a 19 yr old American male)

One: Don't generalize, whereas I can personally attest that most teenage guys think with their pants OR are totally repressed sexually, that is not the case in all scenarios. I personally happen to pride myself on the fact that I make excellent use of my brain while at the same time, not being, shall we say, hormoneless... I simply round out my person.

Two: You want to be an outcast? Are you insane? Beleive me, as one of these romanticized "Outcast men", it really blows, you will be lonely as hell, I guarentee it.

Three: Weight is irrelevant. There ARE perminantly horny fat men... I know a couple... avoid like the plauge, oh ye women!

I work in a group home. I'm around teenage boys every day that I go to work. I have to say, they are some mixed up people. Teenaged boys aren't very good in the hygiene department, for starters. It's not unusual for me to have to tell them to wash their hair, or use soap when they take a shower, because they smell as bad when they come out the bathroom door as they did when they went in, only dampened. They get athlete's foot all of the time, and I got to wondering why you hardly ever hear of a girl getting it. Then I woke up and remembered that in general, girls wash and change their shoes.

There are days when I walk into their rooms to grade how well they've cleaned them, and I have to hold my breath until I can get out of the room to grab some febreeze.

Otherwise, there's a huge hormonal element there. So much so that they fail to consider the consequences of their actions in the most obvious situations. THEN when you confront them on their behavior, they could rationalize anything up to and including murder by saying that the world is unfair to them, and everybody is picking on them.

That said, I wouldn't be the parent of a 16 year old girl for all the gold in Fort Knox. It's like they turn 16, and a switch is flipped. I mentioned this to my brother, who has just become the father of a baby girl. He asked what to expect. I told him that there was nothing in the world that would please a 16 year old girl, and that she'd start a fight over nothing. He said that it would be alright as long as she wins the fight. I replied that the fight she'd start first would be with him.

Let's face it, teenagers are, by and large, male and female, nightmares. They don't realize it until they're into their late 20's or early 30's, if ever, but everyone else sees it as it happens.

That's an unfair assessment. As you said, you work in a group home.

[Further edit defending behavior of said girls and guys, reasserting issues of menstrual cycle, hormones, and peni ["archaic plural"]. Additional testimony of self and others still suffering from acne et al, despite constant skin care.]

But the bottom line is, male or female, teenagers /DO/ have it hard. It's not cliche. They're having hormonal atomic bombs blowing up inside of them, and it's a wonder they both suppress being [the depraved type of] hedonists for so long.

...That being said, I still enjoy being different than the rest. Uncool yet substantially better.
