Greatest Video Games of All Time

Yep, that's right, another trite thread from Keruvalia.

Anyway, so let's think for a bit, eh? Search back through time, the history of video games, and give your list of best ever.

Also, what do you look for in games? Graphics? Replayability? Difficulty? Cheat Codes?

Here's my list (in no particular order):

1] Resident Evil series. Not the best graphics or puzzles, but fun playability and has enough involvement to keep my interests.

2] Warcraft series. Mindless good fun ... 'nuff said. "STOP POKING MEEEE!"

3] Myst/Riven/Exile. Games that force you to think, have astounding scenery and have years of playability. Definately get your money's worth. Also, Exile (Myst 3) has some of the best game music I've ever heard.

4] Ultima series (up to 5). One of the best story lines I've seen in a game ever.

5] Neverwinter Nights. I like any game that lets you build your own worlds.

Things I hate in games:

1] Bad translations.
2] 45 minute long FMV sequences that I can't skip.
3] Bad music. I'll accept horrible graphics if a game has great music.

Anyone else?

Well most FP games make me ill with motion sickness (Quake, Doom, UT, Manhunt) so I'll have to go with MarioKarts, StreetFighter Turbo, CM3, Grand Theft Auto, Sonic (on the Master System), and Command and Conquer.

Aha! I forgot about the Grand Theft Auto series ... that should also be on my list. Great stuff!

1) Zelda: Occarina of Time. 'nuff said

2) Metroid Prime/Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow (tie) - MP cause it was a brilliant FPS and great all-around. SC: PT because it is an unbeliveably realistic stealth game, and the multiplayer mode is the first of its kind

4) Star Wars: KOTOR. Excellent RPG

5) RollerCoaster Tycoon (up until RCT 2 and all those sequels) - one of the funnest sim games I've ever played

Things I hate in games:
1] Bad translations.

Deus Ex.

Fantastic storyline, music and playablity.

Graphics are a bit dated, but it is still brilliant.

The sequel sucks though.

Prince of Persia. - I am still to find someone who actually completed that without cheating.

People say that Doom III is scary, but System Shock II was hands-down the most frightening game ever made, IMHO. It has my vote for one of the best games of all time.

I thought Halo was ok, but Id Software will always have my support. Doom3 is simply astoshining. The graphics alone, when attemped to bet set at their highest, are beyond the capability of a normal desktop computer. Which I think was a good idea for Id Software. It means that their game will continue to surprise people for quite some time.

I disagree. I would have to go with one of the Silent Hills as the most scary. 3 to be more specific. That atmosphere was horrifically awsome. And the little bits they throw in from time to time (Ex: The wheel chair in the Brookhaven Hospital, and the bathroom in the alternate Mall) are great.

IMO...

Prince of Persia. - I am still to find someone who actually completed that without cheating.

The quote might have been posted sometime back originally, but I just wanted to say that I have finished it without cheating as well as thousands of other people. I still think the first, simple version is the best.
Probably the best website out there about Prince of Persia is:
www.phys.uu.nl/~dijkema/prince/

Check out the top times table, I'm listed as Boutboulman just outside the top thirty.

As for the best games ever, Prince of Persia, Command & Conquer series, Another World, and of the course the classic retro games like Space Invaders (and while I'm not much of a fan) Pacman and Tetris. Worms is also class.

I'd have to say either:
Worms
Half-life
Tetris

All due to their great addiction factors.

Well... first of all... my opinion of the scariest/most atmospheric game ever...

The original AVP game. Sitting in the dark, with your surround sound, it's the only time you ever hear your own heart thudding in your ears... and stop breathing - when the Alien breaks cover and comes screaming along the ceiling towards your head...

Most 'Fun':

On PC: Quake series, Unreal series... hell, "Duke Nukem" was a riot too...

On PS2 Buffy: Chaos Bleeds - just the right balance of really hard and do-able elements. Not too cheesy, but doesn't take itself too seriously, either.

Long-Term Playability:

Still find myself going back to "Civilisation: Call to Power" and "Diablo II".

Goldenest Oldy: Already been mentioned: "Elite" was awesome, considering it came out 108 years ago (or something).

I have a most favourite, but the rest aren't in order.

1: Shining Force 2. Classic golden goodness.

Halflife, Doom series, AVP series, Total war series, Far Cry is good too.

GTA=wayyyyy too over-rated. OMG I can drive around and knock over people. And sometimes I shootzor them! and rinse, and repeat ad infinitum.

Hands down, best game ever (IMHO), had to be Alpha Centauri.

It took everything great about Civ II and improved it, took all the annoying crap and ditched it, has the best voice acting I've ever seen in a game or hell pretty much any animated film, and is deep enough that every time I play it (once every couple months) I figure out some new little tidbit. Amazing.

Other great games -- Deus Ex, Half-Life (et al), Worms (Armageddon), Final Fantasy Tactics, and that weird-ass Game Boy game where everyone plays those random minigames where you try to do stuff like grab a stick and put out fires. Great for laughs!

Next time I go home (from college) I'll check my best time on Prince of Persia. I'm pretty sure I finished it with about 40 minutes left. Not in one sitting, though. Prince of Persia 2 unfortunately has an issue with the old Mac we put it on and does not let you become the shadow man, meaning we got to the last level, to learn there is no freakin' way to beat it. Sad times.

GTA 2 - before everything went 3d, has all the pimpin weapons but still the kewl helicopter view 2d stuff from GTA 1

Homeworld - you fly around in space with ships and blow other ships up, it doesnt get much better than watching a frigate take out a fighter and watching it keep going as a burning hunk of metal

Starsiege: Tribes - the only first person shooter where you get to FLY AROUND

Tony Hawk Pro-Skater - do i need to add anything here?

Tenchu series - one of the best stealth games, mainly because of the special kill animations

Double Dragon series - double. dragon. nuff said

Area 51 and Time Crisis - i know they arnt the same thing, but sweet shooting games

It recreated for me the same feeling as when I used the chainsaw but the weapon itself was even better.
Not to mention Force powers.

Aaah Double Dragon!!! *memories*

Tony Hawks was a cool game too, but alas my motion sickness didnt let me play it for more than 30 mins. And that was never long enough to find all the cool secret rooms and bars...

And Metal Gear Solid was awesome.

And good old Alex the Kidd, but that's another story...

Aww...It looks like I'm out of place, video-game wise. I've always been more of an RPG/Tacitcs fan, with a heavy dose of fighting games.

Good RPGs: FF series 4,6,7. Yeah, I'm old-school. However, its always been about what the latest FF games DON'T have rather than what the old ones do. FFX has amazing graphics...but the combat system was hardly above fair in concept. The little red arrow that pulled you around Spira by the nose just killed exploration, even when you COULD explore, you had just spent the last 30 hours going from point A to B as fast as humanly possible, so it effectively discouraged you from going about exporing. That's a horrible way to play a game.

Star Ocean 2? A good game, ambitious and huge. So freaking difficult at times that my head spun.

How about Disgaea? A poorly designed game in the long run; but its innovation, asthetics, and looooooooooooooooooong optional run time makes it a game that I still go back to after 350+ hours of play. The game is just FUN, at least, once you can actually beat people in combat; and that's what makes a good game. (Prinny Baal is now my little fanny-pack penguin biatch)

Dynasty Warriors 3, 3x, 4x: Ah...Dynasty Warriors. I've reached Meditation in this series. I turn it on and just leave the world behind me. I've beaten it every way possible, gotten every character, every item, maxed. Dynasty Warriors 3 is such a good game 2 player, that I've hooked every single friend I have on it. Its supposedly a beat'em up game, but it plays like the closest thing there is to a ancient war simulation game.

4 on the other hand...Dynasty Warriors 4 sucked. They changed the camera angle ever-so-slightly to increase the quality of the graphics, the result was that you could get blind-sided with annoying regulatity simply because the computer KNEW you couldn't see them and did their most powerful attacks off screen and nailed you with it from behind. 4 added new attacks to your repitoire...and then coded the AI to know about them and punish you for using them.

Worst of all, 4 had SERIOUS unbalancing issues; generals could kill your maxed characters in 1 hit sometimes, other times they would be unable to hurt you. This applied to you as well; suddenly you'd just be unable to affect anyone on the field of battle, when you were hitting them IN THE FACE WITH YOUR MASSIVE SPEAR. They'd stand there, blink twice, and nail you with a musou. Freaking annoying. 4x made up for some of the problems, but mostly it wins regard for its limitless "Xtreme" mode. A horrible name for a instant action map generator that made the DW series more like a RPG.

Let us not forget Front Mission 3...4 was good, perhaps a B+ on my scale, but 3 was a massive 200 hour quest across all of Asia. Good, deep plot made deeper by the ability to surf the game's "Internet" for clues, items, general knowledge. The game was fun, smart, and just annoying enough to feel like a real reward when you nailed an enemy with a good combo.

Final Fantasy Tactics? Single best story I have ever seen from Squaresoft. And that's saying something! The design team should get medals for this game, its now an ancient release, but it sets the standard to which ALL other tactics games are compared. I have played this game for over 500 hours, thanks to a leg injury that kept me bedridden some years ago. I've hacked this game to its very source code, to gotten every hidden map and item locked within its US translation.

Dynasty Tactics 1 and 2: Good games, on the surface, almost identical. I cannot say which I perfer though, because the style of 1 is so appealing, but 2 seems like a more full experience. 1 felt more like a bare-bones concept with some very pretty CGs, 2 felt more like a full game. Both took FAR TOO LONG to do anything in though. Really, guys, I'm a fanatic, but even I have limits.

DT1 was a masterpiece of concentration and ecnomy of movement. You spent dozens of hours in that game preparing for that one golden moment when you used the entirety of your army in ONE, SWEEPING, FULL MAP, ALL UNIT COMBO that just flattened your enemy's army in a single turn. It was very Zen, and it rewarded you with the knowledge that you were good at a game that made chess look like tic-tac-toe.

DT2 changed all of that, it gave you the ability to regenerate tactics rapidly, and created ways of making massive tactical combos with almost no effort. Instead of waiting turn after turn for just the right situation to arrive, DT2 made you foucs (on pain of death) on creating smaller, tighter combos that took out a couple of units here and there so you didn't get overrun.

Best fighting game as of yet: Guilty Gear X2

Why? The graphics are considerably updated from the old Capcom games, making it easier to follow the action, this is good because the pace of the game reaches frenetic heights.

The single-player experience is the most complete I have ever seen in a fighting game, it blows my mind how good "Story Mode" can be...yeah, I know what you're thinking, "Story mode in a fighting game?!" Its true though! The story mode introduces you to the characters in a way that few other fighting game have, they all get destinctive personalities, drives, goals, methods of speech. At the same time it presents the player with branching storylines that depend as much on your battle performance as with your concious choices.

I've played the rest of the series, and it doesn't compare to X2. For me, the title just came out of nowhere, blew my mind, and I have yet to see another game of its caliber since. Its a pity, but from what I hear, Guilty Gear Isuka is a poor sequel to GGX2...Well, anyway I could talk for hours about just WHY I like any of the video games that I do.

Holy Hell, I've ranted! I apologize, I'm waiting for my car to get fixed, so I'm bored.

I don't like the lack of an incentive to be sneaky in hitman. I spend 10 minutes sneaking about, get spotted once, and kill every guard in the level in five minutes. then it's a simple matter to finish it.

Halo gets boring as soon as you start to only use the plasma pistol/pistol combo. Especially in multiplayer.

F-Zero - SNES/F-Zero II (Just a remake of F-Zero on BS Famicom) - SNES
Worms - SNES
Secret of Mana - SNES
Blood & Magic - PC (DOS)

I'd be happy if the gaming industry reverted back to SNES. Games were just generally...better...back then, I guess. Though PC gaming has come a long way, and is superior as a gaming platform in general, I can't resist the feel of a Nintendo controller in my hands. =)

It may be before my time, but the classics are some of the best. I'd say one of the best has to be:

RIVERCITY RANSOM for the NES.

If you haven't played it... play it!

The #1 game of all time for me was M.U.L.E.

4 player, ok graphics for the time, great sound and music (atari 800 version) and it taught the basics of cutthroat economics. (do unto others before they do unto you)

#2 would have to be Master of Magic.

#3 Doom and Doom 2

#4 Dungeon Master and Chaos Strikes back. First real time dungeon simulation.

#5 Theif: The Dark Project. First person sneaker!

Oh where to begin:

Best RPG: Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind+Expansion

The music is the best music I've ever heard, there's always a new experience. Ah, than there's the mass slaughter part of it, I'm in the Legion and I'm Lvl. 42, Romanus Maximus! Ah... you could just make your own stories there, and don't even get me started on the Expansions, but I think Bloodmoon pwned Tribunal.

Best FPS: HALO
The music was also wonderful, especially when you're landing from that ship, it's day, all these soldiers are helping you, it's like a Normandy. It really sucks you in.

Best Flight: Star Wars: Battle for Naboo
Ah, the music was okay, but it was the missions they were fun, and damn I loved riding those STAP bikes...

Best Fighter: Soul Caliber 2
Raphael baby, 'nuff said >_> <_< >_<

Best RTS: Age of Empires (the Series)
Like I need to explain

Best PC Game: NationStates ;)

Best Adventure Game: Super Mario 64
It was the first game I've ever played, it sucked me into gaming. The graphics, the music, the diversity, I thought all games were like this, damn I was wrong...

Best Driving Game: Project Gotham Racing 2
It has good graphics and Ferraris, and it doesn't require a high end PC ;)

I guess that's it...

Anything made by Hideo Kojima, especially Metal Gear.

And to all the people who've been saying KOTOR was the best RPG, screw you! It may have been the best Star Wars game, but it doesn't even touch Final Fantasy.

And for the record, Tekken 3 kicked Soul Caliburs ass.

You are so right. I LOVE Morrowind. They need more games like it. I made it to the top rank of the thieves' and mages' guilds, the Legion, the trading company, Hlaau, and too many other things for me to count. Awesome.

Also, some games I loved and I personally think revolutionized gaming:
Chrono Trigger
Earthbound
Goldeneye: 007
Perfect Dark

These are some other games that aren't so big, but still good:
Harvest Moons
Need For Speed: Underground
Call of Duty
BF '42
Age of Empires'
Empire Earth
RoN
The Sims
Dungeon Siege
Neverwinter Nights
Half-Life
Mario: RPG
Timesplitters II

Looking Forward to:
Star Wars: Battlefronts
Rome: Total War
Empire Earth II
Battle for Middle Earth
Brothers in Arms (or whatever its called)
New CoD
Too many more for me to count... I'm gonna have a good Christmas...

Black Thorne - SNES; Castlevania + Super Metroid + LotR
Warcraft II - Tides of Darkness/Beyond the Dark Portal - PC
Black & White - PC
Lords of Magic (Special Edition, basically an expansion) - PC
Mech Warrior...2? - SNES
Mech Warrior 3 - PC
Super Metroid - SNES
Castlevania 1-5 - NES (1-3), SNES (4-5)
F-Zero - SNES/F-Zero II (Just a remake of F-Zero on BS Famicom) - SNES

Omfg. Indeed most of the games listed here are great. But dammit, all of you, except one, so far are missing out on a real gem. The name: Front Mission 3. I'm sorry, on the PSone it's second only to FFVII. Great stroy line, sorry, TWO great story lines, so in total it comes to indeed 200hrs of brilliant gaming. Go to Amazon.com/.co.uk etc, search for Front Mission 3. Then order it. All if you have a PS or PS2 obviously though.

Yes, okay, FFX and FFX-2 probably don't live up to the daddy of them all FFVII, but the stories are still great, and i have yet to find a game with better cut-scene graphics. Those of FFX-2 rule over all else.

One more thing. Metal Gear Solid hasn7t been mentioned even nearly enough. The first was brilliant for PSone. MGS2 Substance was okay, but MGS2 Sons of Liberty Is the best stealth game out there. Also take a look at the Cube's MGS Twin Snakes, essentially the original MGS storyline wit the graphics and gameplay of today. And with MGS3 Snake Eater on the horizon, the MGS series is set to become the best stealth series ever.

Well, my entries. Isn't exactly an "old" gamer (and I stick with purely FPSes - preferably military-related, and flight sims)

Best FPS -- Far Cry for "modern/futuristic", Call of Duty for WWII.
FarCry -- I wasn't expecting to be hooked on with such shooters, but this one got me going. I got this primarily for system testing to see if I can run Doom 3 and HL2 (though I'm not really looking Doom 3 with awe now and that I somehow finished the game on a Centrino CPU laptop with a 32MB Radeon 9000 Mobility). Really good outdoors and indoors graphics, VERY large maps (for those who played FC, Boat and Rebellion are the largest levels I've seen in any FPS except Flashpoint maybe), and excellent gameplay (though the ending especially and the plot in general is a bit weak). Though this looks like some "hit and run" shooter, I do like the fact that it requires you to use various means of stealth and sharpshooting to be succssful. Anyways, excellent game.
Call of Duty -- Excellent WWII shooter. Exactly what I wanted out of one. Graphics are excellent for a game based on a Quake 3 engine, and gameplays are also excellent (though what really pulls down the score is that the scenes of the game are HIGHLY scripted, but many of them are also scripted into great scenes). Maps are relatively few by my standards (around 20 I believe - more like MoHAA), but I'd rather have some meaningful gameplay. I had expected this to be sorta realistic in the sense of teamwork and weapons damage, but it seems that this is not the case for now. The expansion pack looks nice, though I do not like the fact that they are somehow putting you into a B-17 as a gunner as part of the new campaign -- seems too "off the focus".

Yeah...it's pretty good...but FPS's just annoy me really...they're all the same girl with a different dress on. Gameplay is stupidly similar. I just put Halo on there because it's the only thing that makes buying an XBarge not a waste of money....or not a complete waste of money...

FFIX has and EXCELLENT storyline, the Characters development really is amazing (Vivi PWNZ you!), the Battle system is excelent, and the Graphics were state-of-the-art (at the time). It also has a HUGE selection of characters, and you can have 4 party members in your group as well. The Music is superb, and the cut scenes-excellent. The Bosses are truley fearsome, and your summons look ALOT more evil than they did in FFVII(there they just looked like.. welll... blocks).

The only bad thing is that the Bad guy (Kuja)... lets just say hes probably a Sephiroth lover :D but he sux at being one. He isnt very evil. Hes sorta evil but...

No, in fact, I beat it. The game simply sucked. Perhaps if it was a stand alone game, it would be alright, but as a Final Fantasy game, it was supposed to be up to a certain standard. Put simply: it wasn't. Just like Breath of Fire: Dragon's Quarter, it was a dissappointment to an otherwise grand series.

As for the summons, they're not supposed to look evil...and FFVII's looked block-like because of the technology at the time. Still, 7's storyline, characters, and everything else kick the shit out of 9. Better graphics? Sure 9 has better technology, but then again, I hate the style as well...I'd much rather watch someone play 7 or 8 then watch them play 9.

As it has been said before, FFIX is a game that you either love or hate, there IS no OK. Depending on what your tastes are, you might like the game or not. I like that game because it brought the FF series, although for only a short while, back to the Fantasy it really IS! FFVII, although it was great, was more of a SCI-FI game, if you know what i mean. Rocket ships? Giant Metallic Weapons? A giant city full of rocket launchers? At least in FFIX they had mages....

Oh and went i meant "Evil", i kind of meant they looked better and their atacks had cooler names. You cant beat FFVII's battle music though ;).
