I believe it was Sherman, right before he burned Atlanta, but I could easily be wrong--there are some Civil War experts on the board who can answer that definitively.

Leader of the Shawnee. Created an Indian confederation to stop the advance of white settlers. Lost at Tippecanoe against WH Harrison. Allied himself with the British in the War of 1812, died at the Battle of the Thames, where the British abandoned Tecumseh and his soldiers to the advancing American army.

And a note of trivia - he may not have said it exactly in thos words.

"There is many a boy here today who looks on war as all glory, but,
boys, it is all hell."
-General William T. Sherman,
speech 1880 from which we derive the phrase "War is hell"
