What's your favourite spirit (liquor)

Just a simple poll.

For me, it's scotch - I used to be a big bourbon drinker, but I much prefer scotch (& dry) these days. Bourbon is too sweet for my taste... My "brand" of scotch is Ballentine's.

If you can't find a choice that suits you, tick other.

...and yes, I know I screwed up the spelling of omnipotent..;)

I chose Tequila, though Gin was a real close second.
I still want to get some genuine absinthe with the Thujone in it, like a 110mg.
or however it is they measure it.
But Tequila is my stuff, and not that piss water Quervo that Americans think is the be all end all of Tequila either, I like good quality brands that are 100% blue Agave.
Patron is good(about $45USD)
Or Sauza Tres Generacion(about $60USD depending on where you are)

Scotch, but only the single malts as my palate is not developed enough to detect all the nuances of the blends. As for a favorite, it really does depend on the year and the distillary, although I am partial to the lighter Islays. For an everyday spirit I go with Bushmills, a reasonably priced and consistantly good quality whiskey.

hmm, tough call. currently i'm exploring booze that hasn't made it to the states yet - or at least hasn't made it completely into public knowledge. and i'm trying to figure out the best way to get some absinthe.

I'm a whiskey man in general--you know the word comes from a Gaelic root that means "water of life," right?

I prefer Irish, especially Black Bush and Bushmills, although I'll drink a Jameson's or a Tullamore Dew and not turn my nose up at it. A good single malt Scotch is wonderful. I've drunk a lot of Aberlour in my time.

But thanks to my new part-time job, I've had the chance to taste some 18th century style rye whiskey--124 proof and usually runs about 120 bucks a bottle. We make it--in fact, I helped bottle some of it today. It is powerful, but god is it smooth. It's called "Old Potrero" and it now comes in the original rye spirit (124 proof) and a whiskey (94.5 proof), and I highly recommend both of them.

Get mailboxes etc. box in canada have it shipped there then go pick it up.
Of course I live in Detroit so that makes it a 15 minute drive for me.
However the cost of the Absinthe is fairly high.

I like Bushmills myself, but give a website for the Whiskey you bottle so one might order it, i have never tried a Rye.

You can't order it from the website--liquor licenses are a bitch--but you can check with your local distributor. We ship to all 50 states and around the world.

That's a pretty good vodka--didn't know it was French. When it comes to vodka, I'm pretty traditional--Stolichnaya for me. And just the regular stuff--none of that flavored vodka.

Also a good vodka. The thing about vodka is that since it's lacking in flavor for the most part, the only thing to really judge it by is smoothness, and there are a lot of good, smooth vodkas out there.

I'm a bit older then most, but for my money the best drink is still a Wild Turkey neat. Here is another great recipe.

Country Sunset

1. Find a spot by the lake, preferably facing west.
2. Place 2 easy chairs also facing west on the shore.
3. Pour 2 fingers (at a time) into each of two glasses. No ice, No water, Neat
4. The Sun and the Turkey should go down together, shared with your best friend
5. Toast "May you never lie, cheat, steal, or drink! But if you must lie then lie in your lovers' arms. If you steal, steal a kiss. If you must cheat, cheat death. And if you must drink, drink with me, your best friend."
6. Repeat often.

Also try Elijah Craig 18 yrs old, Fighting Cock, Knob Creek, Rowans Creek, and Echo Spring. These will teach you to enjoy drinking. Never ever use water or ice as it damages the Bourbon atoms.

I never drink spirits to enjoy the flavour, maybe I should try that sometime.

Saying that, I'm not that big of a regular drinker, and only drink to get drunk so I dont think I'm missing out on too much in that respect...

But if I didn't choose vodka, my option would have been all of the above.

If you don't mind going blind you can make it yourself ;)

But I haven't drunk it for a while. Ever since I woke up on morning with no idea where I was, with about a 4 hour memory black out. Well, I least I wasn't sick.

Vodka for me (normal not flavoured). Does anyone else drink it straight? As a heads up, I wouldn't try Tesco's value Vodka, £6.00 a bottle, but as nasty as hell.

Sambuka used to be my favorite, until I found it was a laxative.... The hard way (there was no mess, i did manage to reach a toilet btw)

I'll second that. I spent THREE HOURS throwing up after drinking half a bottle mixed genorously with lemonade, and I hadn't mixed my drinks. I wasn't a lightweight either.

I've gone off spirits, but if I go out with my mates we sometimes have a few shots of AfterShock Red, which is a mouth-burningly-spicy cinamon liquer at 40% Very sugary though.

I bet the same thought went through your head. "Ooo, that looks cheap, and I am strapped for cash."

If nothing else, Tesco's has taught the value of quality.

For taste, I really like either Japanese Plum Wine (not sake, but made from the green Ume plums from Japan) with crushed ice, especially after a hot muggy Japanese day in Fukuoka.

For getting drunk I like really cheap brandy. It's affordable, pretty high alcohol content and it goes down really easy.

I rather used to like chilled quality vodka, but after a bad experience with a similar to Tesco's brand vodka (Popov if anyone knows it, it was $3.00US a fifth at the time), I avoid vodka. One of these days I'll work up the courage to try Whiskey, a blend (yes that's the name of it) but until then cheap vodka is the worse drinking experience I've ever had.

I just have a drink, about three times a month, so a bottle(Patron) will last me all year .

I put Rum, but only because grain alcohol wasn't an option. I'm a big fan of Everclear and Rum 151- you know, liquor that's so strong that it's flamable. Not that I drink it straight- God no- but none the less, a very little bit in a drink goes a vey long way.

I chose vodka because I mix alot of stuff. Red Bull and vodka is great in moderation. The first time I ever got drunk was at a club and my friend kept buying those for me. I hit the dance floor and I was doing dance moves I didn't think I knew. As for what type of vodka I usually end up drinking the cheap stuff. My friend is coming through with a bottle of absinthe so that might be my new favorite if I see the green fairy.

p.s. Is anyone surprised that only one person has chosen gin?

Nothing beats a good whiskey. I have a loving relationsshp with Canadian Club who keeps me warm at night. Single malts are all good too but a decent one is about $100 so not an everyday drink really.

It's worth it to me to pay more and not suffer the massive headache the next day. (Of course, I've also learned when to stop drinking so much as well.:D)

Whiskey is an excellent choice for people wanting to avoid a hangover because you dont need to mix it which mean less sugar etc to mess up your stomach. Also if you drink it neat or over ice then the alcohol hits your bloodstream quicker as the stomach is actuially irritated by 80 proof spirits undiluted and so more spirit passes into your intestine withour having the alcohol content neutralised by stomach digesiton. All this means that you get drunk without consuming as much alcohol overall and hence less headaches in the morning.

No, I didn't stop drinking vodka because of the hangover, which was awful, but because of the direct effect - it's usually a bad thing when you wake up in a different country than the one you started drinking in with your car, wallet and pants left in the first country and vague memories that may have involved livestock ( to clarify: I'm not certain livestock were not involved, I'm reasonably certain they weren't, but the possibility that they were is supported by circumstances). As for sulfites, I don't think there are many in liqours, if left over from the fermentation (although I cannot imagine why they would be used in fermentation anyway) distilation should remove them. Sulfites are a wine problem, more in red than white, but I cannot imagine sulfites being used for liquor. Perhaps if the mash is sweetened with fructose to speed fermentation sulfates would be added?
