However, they also have sued on behalf of people, like the teenage girl I mentioned, whose religious freedom has been abridged. The school removed her quote from the yearbook because it was a Bible quote. The ACLU sued them on behalf of the girl and they had to put it back in. See?

The ACLU is by no means anti-religion. They are anti-(religion in government), which is a valid viewpoint to hold, considering what happens historically when you mix the two.

Not because he or she doesn't believe it's true, but because the ACLU is perceived as being an ultra-liberal outfit that hates all religion, and if Fox News (for example) got their hands on such an e-mail it would mean big, big trouble.

But, as an aside, what can you say about wicca that is positive? It's a fabricated "religion" invented in the last 100 years that is supposed to be based upon ancient (forgotten) practices that occurred millenia ago. Isn't wicca mainly just a pseudo religion for bored white middle class females who have lost faith in established religion and have nothing better to do with their time?

I doesn't matter whether this is from a real ACLU rep or not; assuming its real, it's from a real idiot, and his/her opinion doesn't matter. If we're expected not to judge all conservatives by Jerry Falwell's verbal diarehea, then why should conservatives try to use this idiot's sentiments to paint a picture of all liberals?

There are two possibilities:

a) the was no email and WW is a troll, or the email was just spam mail from someone pretending to represent the ACLU

or

b) the letter was sent from someone who *had* worked for the ACLU, but had been fired, and used their last day at work to send out a bunch of emails from their work account to get back at their now-former employees.

If you think the second option sounds silly, let me paraphrase the Odd Spot from the Age (a newspaper here in Australia) a couple of days a go:

A man recently recieved a letter addressed to a Mr Shagslikeadonkey, from <insert some organisation I've forgotten the name of>. It turns out the letter was sent by an ex-worker from the organisation who had recently been fired and was using his official company stationary to get back at his former employees.

So it could have been a 'genuine' email (actually from someone at the ACLU). That doesn't mean that it actually represents any of the views of people working for the ACLU.

This is VERY reminiscient of the trolling FSB used to perpetrate. Nothing quantifying, just lightin' the flame and watchin' everyone get their freak on.

I used to have a room next to a Wiccan in student halls last year. She was weird. She had all these books on the subject and was kind enough to let me look at a couple. So I can say first hand that this Wiccan nonsense is exactly as it was earlier described, sheer escapism.

But what do they need to escape from?

Well, this aforementioned girl was very nice and kind to me(although could be nasty and bitchy to others), but she used to cut herself on both her forearms, nasty cuts, and parade them around the kitchen when everyone was there. A total attention freak. She used to have arguments with people on her mobile, really loudly, walking into the kitchen, hang up, and when nobody said anything, or even looked, she would storm off in a huff.

So we're dealing with a few skeletons in the cupboard, right?

A lot of people have been dismissing Wicca as "escapist" or implying that since it's formalization (not necessarily it's practice in one form or another) is fairly recent, that somehow makes it less valid than religious traditions with a longer lineage. What's the criteria for this judgement? Is it just age? Is there something about the core beliefs of Wicca that make it fundamentally "sillier" than any of the major monotheistic religions out there and, if so, again, what's the criteria?

This is clearly a fake. No one in the ACLU would ever send an email like this. Not because he or she doesn't believe it's true, but because the ACLU is perceived as being an ultra-liberal outfit that hates all religion, and if Fox News (for example) got their hands on such an e-mail it would mean big, big trouble.

But, as an aside, what can you say about wicca that is positive? It's a fabricated "religion" invented in the last 100 years that is supposed to be based upon ancient (forgotten) practices that occurred millenia ago. Isn't wicca mainly just a pseudo religion for bored white middle class females who have lost faith in established religion and have nothing better to do with their time?

I used to have a room next to a Wiccan in student halls last year. She was weird. She had all these books on the subject and was kind enough to let me look at a couple. So I can say first hand that this Wiccan nonsense is exactly as it was earlier described, sheer escapism.

But what do they need to escape from?

Well, this aforementioned girl was very nice and kind to me(although could be nasty and bitchy to others), but she used to cut herself on both her forearms, nasty cuts, and parade them around the kitchen when everyone was there. A total attention freak. She used to have arguments with people on her mobile, really loudly, walking into the kitchen, hang up, and when nobody said anything, or even looked, she would storm off in a huff.

So we're dealing with a few skeletons in the cupboard, right?

Assuming the original email is real, have you considered the possibility of it being a wind-up? Someone is taking the piss. It's not to be taken seriously. By getting all huffy about it, the sender has already won, as he's got what he wanted: a reaction.

You're giving him far too much credit. Last week when he was at recess, somebody on the monkey bars told him witches were evil Satan worshipers, and that some of them were called Wiccans. He probably heard about the ACLU from catching his daddy's Fox News broadcast while Powerpuff Girls were on a commercial.

If this whole conversation weren't so incredibly silly, it might have been fun to be more inventive. Ah well.

Let's not forget, this is a "Wiccan" who is against enviromental protection treatys like Kyoto. That's a bit 'odd' to say the least.

How can your one 'encounter' with a 'wiccan' shed any light on the veracity of this 'email'? For all you know, the email might be real... although it seems unlikely... it just might not actually be from the ACLU.

You picked one bad example, to try to prove a negative image. You generalised all wiccans with that statement, and yet you have insufficient experience to be making a generalisation.

What you don't realise is: you've probably met hundreds of wiccans that you didn't KNOW were wiccans.
