'bout soul mates...
See, I've been thinking. If the idea of soul mates is that every person in existence is meant to be with a specific person, and that person with them... what about the people who are left over?
As you may know, there are more women than men in the world. Hence it would be impossible for every woman to have a man that is intended just for them. Now maybe we assume the remaining women are lesbians.
But we have to remember, that there must be enough lesbians then not only to cover the difference in numbers between men and women, but account for gay men (which takes 2 men out of the possible soul mate pool, and supposedly accounts for 10% of all men).
So that means, by my rough guesstimating math, there are either a lot more lesbians than I'm aware of (and than statistics report), or there are women without a soulmate.
Just food for thought.

You are operating on the assumption that your soulmate is the same age as you are. It could be that they are not even born until you are past a hundred years old. This means it could be that although within your lifetime a soul mate will exist, they do not currently do so. Therefore the disparity between the numbers of males and females is not as simplistic as may at first appear: the 'surplus' females may have soul mates that will only be born years from now... thus postponing any problems until a later date.
(Not the clearest, but you might be able to follow the reasoning goin gon there. Hey, its getting late where I am so you have to make some excuses.)

The soul mate doesn't have to be the same age of course, and perhaps they will not even exist at the same time. But that doesn't solve the problem. The woman dies before her soul mate is born, and eventually he comes in to existence. He is her soul mate however, and thereby can be nobody elses.
In other words, even though the population has lost one woman, and gained one man, there are in fact the exact same ratio of women:men who are available to be soul mates. ;)

Well that's all with the fact that everyone has a soulmate is given. I would say that that's not true. If there was only one person for everyone in the world imagine the odds of actually finding that one person out of the billions that exist. I'd say most people have more than one soul mate.

I think a soulmate is a person you meet who you feel a deep spiritual attachment too; you can talk to them about anything. You feel an instant click. I think that it is someone who accepts you.
I believe I have three soulmates. No, don't laugh... I believe this because a soulmate isn't a romantic partner, it's a lifetime friend. The first person is my best friend, the second person is another good friend of mine who is like a big brother and the last one is a very good friend who I care for dearly, who just so happens to be my boyfriend.
So, it is possible for your soul mate to be of either sex and the person isn't your intimate partner. It is just someone who accepts you and you feel a spiritual click with.
... and, besides that lesbian thing...
just to let you know,
there are people/cultures who still practice polygamy,
so 2 wives per husband...
oops... nvm what i wrote...
i was talking about marriage =[

I hadn't even thought of that. o.o;
Of course, I also neglected the different opinions of what a soul mate entails. I stuck with the definition I usually hear, which of course was the (one) person you are destined to spend your life with. I respect alternate viewpoints on the nature of soul mates.
Also, this post was intended to be somewhat tongue in cheek. Just for reference.

Just out of curiosity, have you ever read Mort by Terry Pratchett?
PS: Clearly society needs more lesbians & polygamous relationships* This will cut down the competition for the rest of us.
* Not my relationships but. I don't like to share my toys with anyone.

but that would mean that there are less girls to go around, this would upset the ratio, meaning that im going to be single forever :headbang:

No, it just means that we'd have something more constructive to do with our surplus females, other than putting them in nunneries.
Honestly, you try to make the world a better place...
Just see that all you single chicks (or chappies, for that matter) keep your grubby mits off of my man!
its only wrong by certain religions, just because people have different beliefs than you doesnt make it wrong
well... for a girl, that i am,
i think it's wrong...
and in my culture,
the older generations do practice it,
but whatever...
it changes when you live in america...
:D you can get gay sex still...

I'm glad you took note of the various possibilities for the term "Soul Mate". Nowadays, if a female talks about her "girlfriend", you're not sure if she means a female friend or a romantic partner of the same gender. Ironically enough, if the former is the meaning, a male could never use "boyfriend" in the same manner. Sad really. But I digress.....
I view a "Soul Mate" as one with whom your soul is perfectly or at least greatly matched. There can be more than one of these people in your life. For my example I offer up my Clan, k'Shaya (hmmm where have we heard that before..oh yeah my country. ;) ) Clan k'Shaya is comprised of several people who are like a family save that not one of us is blood related to any of the others. We are so tightly knit that we believe that we are Soul Bonded to wach other and thus we are all Soul Mates.
In comparison, I am in love with one of our Clan (I said we're LIKE family not we are...no incest jokes!) and her and I are so close that we, and the others in the Clan, believe we are Lifebonded and thus refer to ourselves as Life Mates. Being Lifebonded is diffrent than being in love. It is not something that can easily go away. Indeed, I do not believe that such a bond can be broken. We've certainally had our test of that.
Now I realize that some may think I am not fully grounded in the world, with what I have said here. It does sound a lot like the stuff Fantasy stories are written from. I will even admit that some of the terms my Clan uses do indeed come from Fantasy stories, but what we used the words to describe exsisted before we ever found the words. When found the words fit so aptly, we adopted them. Are we living in fantasy then? Maybe, but then the same could be said about anyone who believes in any Deity, for the proof of such would be the same: Personal experiance. For that matter, believeing that there is a Soul Mate as initially thought of by the originator of this thread, could be construded as fantasy by some.
Just my two quills worth.
Oh, just for reference, I don't (personally) believe in soul mates, at least in the original definition used.
^_^;;
But thanks for that well thought out post. :)

Reincarnation could easily support the soul mate thing as well. It goes nicely with the age argument.
