Brinksmanship wins again!

Just hours after Iraqi PM Ayad Allawi threatens supporters of radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr with an Iraqi-led offensive in the Imam Ali mosque, a spokesman for al-Sadr says that he has accepted the peace terms set down by the Iraqi government. CNN is running one of those annoying "breaking news" bulletins that give a header but don't actually tell any details.

If it's true and if it holds, it's a powerful prop up for Allawi's fledgling government.

Al Sadr knew that his guys couldn't hope to prevail against an assault on the shrine, and he knew that if it was moslems who attacked the rest of Iraq's shia population could not be expected to rise up and support him. It's good to see the new Iraqui government start taking some responsibility for their own security. Maybe we will have a functioning democracy in Iraq someday.

Possibly, however I'm not sure al-Sadr and his Medhi army are actually terrorists as they are attempting to occupy territory. Either way, them voluntarily disbanding and leaving the Imam Ali mosque is a much better solution than anyone's troops, Iraqi or US, storming it.

That would have been a mess

Yeah, a huge nightmare. Even if only Iraqi troops went in...blah, it just doesn't bear thinking about.
