Olympic Beach Volleyball "uniforms" - why so skimpy?

Anyone know why the women beach volleyballers wear bikinis as their uniform? Does it actually give some advantage? Or is it just "traditional" roots?
(Not that I'm complaning! Some of those women are damned sexy!)

Did you know that a couple of years ago the ruling Beach Volleyball association made it mandatory from women to wear bikinis, and even had this:
Bottoms cannot be more than two and a half inches wide on the sides
That's Bikini bottoms btw, not real bottoms.
So I think we can all see what the purpose of those teensy weensy bikinis are: To get more of us armchair sportsmen interested in this noble and dignified sport :p

I guess its the same reason why the tennis outfits for men and women have drastically changed in recent years also...

Sure Nike would say something about aerodynamicism(sp?!!!) if they were pushed but surely it just makes viewing of repetitive sports easier on the eyes...

I know this probally doesnt have anything to do with this post, but some of the members of the Romanian and U.S Womens Gymnastics are damn hot. However some of the women in the olympics are so athletic that they look like men and are real ugly.

I think it's because volleyball is a real sport, and beach volleyball sort-of isn't, but women in skimpy clothing is always worth televising.

I agree with the idea that it is for aesthetic purposes

My mother just about hit the roof when she say those uniforms. My dad made a show of saying they were too skimpy also, but I suspect he didn't really mind all that much. ;)

What I've heard from volleyball players is the women are dressed right for the sport, and that it's the men who are disadvantaged by their baggy shorts and tank tops. So really, the men's uniform should be a Speedo or something.

Please, for the love of God and all that is holy, suppress that idea and don't share it with anyone else.

Thats a little bit sexist. I'm sure there are plenty of women who want to see the men in speedo's and don't enjoy seeing the women in skimpy bikini's.

With a woman, it doesn't hang out quite as much. Speedos really are a crime against nature. Trust me, as a swimmer, I know.

i played indoor volleyball - where the women are required to wear spandex shorts and the men just wear baggy shorts as well. i know the women wear the spandex so they can get closer to the net for blocking and spiking, if clothes touch the net it counts as a penalty. however men are usually stronger and can jump higher than most of the women, so they can afford to hand back off the net a little more...

at least that was the case for my league.

I agree, it's inhumane and cruel.

The answer is simple, to make beach volleyball interesting and worth putting on TV.

Well they aren't tangas, but they are smaller than appears needed simply for sport.

Actually, the bikinis should be changed to something akin to a sports bra. The smaller the chance of hitting the net, the better. While I wouldn't enjoy men wearing the Speedos, they should wear tighter clothing for better performance. I was watching the Men's beach volleyball with Norway vs the USA and there were a bunch of violations where the shirts hit the net. It was very frusturating to watch considering they don't have to wear the loose clothes.

Woops. Looks like they already have been. Well that works for me. Now they just have to work on the men's uniforms.

Actually, I understand the Japanese women are wearing bras under those uniforms.
Our players will be required to wear bras under their tank-tops.
