What if you are looking at the globe from the perspective of over the pacific ocean rather then the Atlantic
Then the “West” would be on the right … and the “Far East” would be on the left LOL

Originally the distinction referred to the sides of the debating chamber that members of different political factions sat at in the English Parliament.

The whole Left-Right distinction is useless now. Who is more Left-wing, a Liberal or a Socialist?
Who is more Right-wing, a neo-Conservative or a Nazi? I could give convincing arguments for all sides being more Left/Right.
Why do we have to classify peoples arguments, why can't we just hear them and then debate on whether they are good or not?

left and right originates from the westminster system of parliament, which got the left/right dichotomy, distinction, spectrum etc. from the pre-revolution estate general of France. the supporters of the king and clergy sat on the right, (a place of honour) and those in favour of reform, sat on the left. Basically, it just means that the right is traditionally more conservative, and the left is more radical. Though, if you started following any party's manifesto, any place on the left-right scale would be hard to dictate. i wrote an essay for politics about this last semiester, and to be honest, left and right is total rubbish.

south = right
north = left
Apparently Semitic languages show traces of a system where the South was on the right and the north was on the left on maps. Not really on-topic but i think it's interesting...no? Oh well, never mind.
The right-left divisions are pretty meaningless, but the varients are almost as bad. I've been toying with the http://www.politicalcompass.org two axi compass, and think it really does need a third axis, or two different axi. I think a more accurate test would focus on distingushing between government power: statism/individualism and government purpose: control/benevolence. Under this sort of arangement socialism (not communism; as practiced) would wind up being statist-benevolent, fascism would be statist-controling, anarchy (syndicalist style) would be individualist-benevolent and libertairianism (american) would be individualist-controling.

Perhaps a Coastline vs Inner states split would be more appropriate? If you look at Washington and the other pacific northwest states, major populations centers are staunchly liberal while pretty much the rest of the state are staunchly conservitive. It seems that with few exceptions the inner states of the union are right-leaning and the coasts are left leaning.
